Resident Evil: Afterlife tops US box office
Fourth installment in Capcom-inspired film franchise takes in $27.7 million; best opening weekend for series to date.
On Friday, Resident Evil: Afterlife hit North American theaters after being savaged by critics. However, like the zombie hordes the film and its Capcom-published inspirations depict, moviegoers overran theaters to see the action-horror film.
Variety reports that Afterlife raked in $27.7 million over the weekend, a record opening for the film series. The original Resident Evil opened with $17.7 million in 2002, followed by Apocalypse with $23.0 million in 2004 and Extinction with $23.7 million in 2007. The Hollywood trade magazine pointed to Afterlife's IMAX and 3D presentations--which have higher ticket prices--as the reasons for the uptick in revenues.
Resident Evil: Afterlife once again stars Milla Jovovich as Alice, a heroine battling for survival in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. Five years after the evil Umbrella Corporation's virus resulted in a large portion of the world's population becoming shuffling undead, she travels to Los Angeles to seek a safe haven. Naturally, though, things do not go according to plan.
Bad reviews aside, Afterlife is a rare financial success story for game-based films. Most that make it to the screen are critical and box-office bombs, such as Doom, BloodRayne, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, and Dungeon Siege: In the Name of the King. One of the most high-profile and best-reviewed game-based films to date, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, was a commercial disappointment despite a nearly $200 million budget and the backing of Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
Hope remains, however, as a film set in the Warcraft universe is currently in preproduction with Spider-Man director Sam Raimi at the helm. The project has the support of both film studio Warner Bros. and production company Legendary Pictures (The Dark Knight, Watchmen, 300).
I really think that this movie use RE name it sucks
90% of the movie was slow motion crap. Landing a plane on top of a building is impossible The RE movies suck, they should either follow the source material or not make the movies at all.
lol must be slow at the theaters
Nice stats, but how about an update of how many people walked out and demanded their money back? I thought Silent Hill was pretty much the only game inspired movie that felt true enough to the source material. Uncharted could have swept them all if Fillion was cast as Drake and Powers Booth as Sully...and it actually followed the game plot. Heck, Prince of Persia could have been epic if they followed the game directly, given that without the platforming you could burn through that game in the time it takes to watch an average movie.
I think Doom was fine. It made more sense than the Street Fighter films and the twist on putting evil in the genes was interesting.
My god you have to be kidding. If this the most successful then it just reminds me of why I hate the casual masses lol. The Resident Evil movies have sucked since the second one. Only videogame movies I ever liked were Mortal Kombat an the first Resident Evil. Alice character sucks ass in the later one's. If people like her then they just must go gaga over any supergirl. Cause if you played the games you would know heroes in RE never have super powers. They are bad ass cause they can survive the monsters without them. Giving Alice superpowers was only put in so they could do stupid slow mo Matrix effects to appease the drooling brain dead masses. It works well I guess. If you ask me though best thing about Alice was the 3 seconds or so in the original where you see her naked.
People are so biased. Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat were terrible movies. Resident Evil is the most high quality game based movie to date. I wish most people had the brain power to realize it is their own biases which hate the film, not because it's bad. If you dont like Alice, dont watch the damn movie. I find her awesome, and so do countless others. A lot of gamers are idiots that dont bother giving the movie a chance because they must have something to whine about, despite not seeing the movie.
My favs are Street Fighter & Mortal Kombat =)))
Mortal kombat was the best video game movie ever, deal with it.
Afterlife was poop three days old and left in the sun.
Afterlife is moderately fun (slightly more than the third movie), but equally forgettable. There's far too many slow-mo during the action sequences, it's annoying. Personally, I rather they just stop making these (movies) entirely. Having a movie come out hand-in-hand with every single RE game is seriously grating.
I saw the movie and found it moderately entertaining. However, there were hardly any good 3D effects and the storyline is stupid. If you want to see some mindless action without bothering about the story, this is your movie.
I think I can speak for everyone when I say Alice single handedly ruined the movie series. RE1(No Alice): Not bad, kind of cool actually RE2(Alice): Left the movie theater angry RE3+4(Alice): Don't have to watch because it sounds like I'll leave equally angry, if not more so. RE5(Alice, but dies in a humiliating manner brought upon by her own hubris.) I would pay in blood to watch this movie.
Haven't seen it but I imagine it's full of one-liners... nothing else to see right now anyway
I don't get how Prince of Persia was well-reviewed. I thought it was awful.
milla jovovich is so hot!!!
yeah the words of critics is NOT the word of God,it's just someone else's thoughts, and their thought patterns are shaped by professional standards that generally don't favor video game based movies or science fiction in general, kinda like the oscars
Just to show you people will go watch a movie despite what critics may say. Of course nothing bad about that, since the best person who can decide whether a movie is good or bad is the viewer who plans to watch it.
Movie was great. I saw it twice
Hard to make a movie about something like Warcraft where the fanbase is huge and hard to please. If it's good though it'll make some serious profit. Also I owe my friend 20 dollars, as soon as this was announced I bet the movie would bomb from day 1. Who woulda guessed this one would actually be decent?
sam raimi... i really beg to you A LOT that you better make a good wow movie or i will become your nightmare
I really started disliking the RE movies just because Alice is one invincible overpowered b**-ch, however, they fixed that right from the beginning of Afterlife, which was VERY much appreciated. I liked the first movie, it was a great side-story to tie-in with the games, however, Apocalypse was beyond awful with Alice defeating NEMESIS barehanded (I don't care how much of a powerful experiment she is meant to be, she doesn't LOOK badass enough to give NEMESIS a beating). Extinction was an improvement, but I was hoping they would end the series with that one because they had already strayed ridiculously far away from the source material. Afterlife was surprisingly nice and fun though, they even gave us some really awesome fan service to the Chris-Claire fans in the final fight. I'm aware that better zombie movies/series have been made, but I think it's pretty cool that RE is doing so well. RE:Degeneration was pretty boring and meh, they shouldn't have bothered with that one.
It's amazing what people will go to see just because it's in 3-d.. These movies where beyond awful, including this one.. Once the novelty of the 3-d wears off and your left with this AWFUL movie everyone in the theater started getting annoyed.. Not to mention the section of "short haired women wearing mens clothes" hooting and hollering after every CORNEY AS HELL line from our cast about "girl power" and the like.. Just annoying beyond annoying..
and 1 last note.....throughout the ENTIRE movie series..... not one mention of Barry or "i hope this isn't Chris's blood"...or a "Jill sandwich!"
the resident evil movies weren't too bad.. the action sequences are mostly right-on from the games.. too bad the stroylines arent really consistant with the games at all.. (wtf is alice to begin with? not in any of the games...[zzz] no leon in any of them, licker as end boss in first movie, lickers in second don't morph from others dna etc etc, nvm.they didnt morph in the game either.but the first movie it does, where's the hunters and chimeras?) well, guess if you want leon's story. gotta watch the cgi movie "degeneration" (atleast that wasn't screwed cuz capcom made) and finally...as for this movie....anderson obviously only played resident evil 1,seen trailers for residebnt evil 3,and played 5 and totally skipped 2 and 4 all together (the games) obviously just picked and pecked at em/game genied / cheated/youtubed/cinematics only'd them. (this movies depicts mostly / only resident evil 5....sort of..and does a half assed job of that, uberboros zombies intact .but lacking etc etc..ffs..) nice attempt at a movie. story line is a bummer.. but i can watch em for what they're worth. (but i am a die-hard resident evil fan..go figure)
stupid game,same the movie
You guys do realize that Paul WS Anderson only directed this one and the first one right? And thats why Apocalypse and Extinction blew hard? This one goes back to the formula that made the first one so enjoyable.
yea ... 3D or gtfo ... , a movie isn't good unless it's in 3D man!!!!!
I haven't seen any of them after the dismal second film. The first film was great! What the hell happened?
You'd think all that makeup would run and blind her, but i guess shes so super human she doesnt sweat.
The movie is so-so ... but the 3D is AWESOME .... so if you not watching it in 3D, don't watch it at all ...
The only highlight of this movie is that the black superstar survived.
I don't care what they do to the series anymore, but first get rid of Paul Anderson and Milla Jovovich/Alice. They have no business whatsoever to be...er...in this business.
Another day of defeat in the ongoing war of "Will We Ever Get a Decent Movie Adaptation of Video Games?". When flocks of people (cannon fodder) keep going to watch crap like this, it looks like a war we can never win.
They need to reboot the movies & follow the games storylines.
@X-7 0.0 Do you want another Street Fighter Legend of Chung Li
i keep getting this Paul Anderson and the good Paul Anderson (Magnolia, There Will Be Blood,Boogie Nights) confused.. anyways yeah its a horrible film dont waste your money.
Oh yeah James Cameron did the 3D for the film and it shows the 3D effects were phenomenal!!!
BEST ONE YET!!! Seen it in 3D and absolutely loved it!
Looks like the rest of the series, good for a rental, skip it in the theater.Machete, on the other hand, must be seen as soon as possible by anyone who is a fan of pure ass kicking types of movies.
Why does everyone think Milla is hot? She's not ugly but not exactly pretty either. She's just average. Anyway, this crappy adaptation can burn. Capcom should have made the movies themselves.
I will defenitly watch this movie... resident evil plus Milla Jovovich and Ali Larter.. :D
My review is that I walked in expecting a hunk of cr@p, and I walked out actually talking about parts of the movie I liked... Not saying it was a great film, but it definitely gave the first one a run for it's money. Watch it in IMAX 3D - you'll like it!
i liked the previous ones. this one seems great also. not gonna miss it
u wanna gud resident evil movie just watch degeneration, that can relate to the series more than them 4 movies together, they're a nice alternative to the games but in future just do stories within the timeline between the resident evil games like degeneration, resident evil games (main games) don't get made for 3-4 years each so u want to fill the gap for games do a movie to show events tht hav happened in games or after games like resident evil 2 *spoiler, 3 survivors, zombies r still around wot happened next or resident evil 4 tht would be a fantastic setting for a movie.
cant wait to watch this movie
Paul Ws Anderson may not be a good movie director but at less his movies are a million times better than Owe Bolls.
It's fun!! I look at it as a "what if" alternate reality RE storyline. Because it obviously contradicts everything in the video game reality. But you can't go wrong with sexy girls and guns in slo mo. Jill Valentine FTW.
How come they make EVERY character they introduce a chain smoker? Smokings not badass... its nasty.
That movie is a miss from begin to the end. There are too many slow motion scenes, and characters are not interesting. it will place on my list as the worst flim of 2010.
