Capcom touts initial deployment of survival horror shooter as franchise's biggest launch ever; demo downloads also stand at 4 million.
Capcom apparently has it in for the human race. The publisher said today that it has flooded retailers with 4 million units of its latest zombified survival horror shooter Resident Evil 5 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Capcom also said that the RE5 demo has been downloaded more than 4 million times through Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network.
As noted by Capcom, RE5's initial shipment figure marks the largest launch for any Resident Evil game since the franchise debuted in March 1996. To date, the franchise has now shipped more than 40 million units since the initial installment arrived 13 years ago.
Capcom also provided a brief update on Resident Evil happenings beyond the gaming sphere, saying that the three Resident Evil films combined have reached total sales in excess of $300 million. The CG film Resident Evil: Degeneration has now shipped more than 1.5 million copies, according to the publisher.
Capcom's latest survival horror action adventure sees original RE protagonist Chris Redfield and companion Sheva Alomar confront the heart of undead darkness in African shantytowns. Gamers can go it alone in the over-the-shoulder third-person shooter or team up with a friend to have one player control Chris while the other handles Sheva. A Versus mode can also be purchased through XBL and the PSN for $5.
A PC edition of the game is expected later this year. For more information, check out GameSpot's full review of Resident Evil 5.
Comparing 2 different games to make your point about RE5 is lamo supreme. Nonetheless this game kicks seriously zombie butt!
Still haven't bought this game yet, so you can add me to the list when I get sick of Playing Killzone 2, june, july maybe.
Damo: At least Capcom understands that games deserve a story to be playable.... I own both GOWs and would gladly throw them away (as I've already considered because they can't afford a dedicated server and Epic sucks at patching broken games) to pick up any game with a decent story. Gears is begging for a good story and they could easily make something good out of it, but once again, Epic sucks and they know they don't have to invest in silly things such as stories because most of the fans are surface level and only use 2% of their brain... I'm sure you and plenty of other GOW morons are happy playing shallow characters as they probably resemble the GOW gaming community--cheating, ignorant and shallow idiots....
Resident Evil 5 is one of the best games I have ever played. The controls are way better than any of the others and even though it may not be as "SCARY" because people were complaining, it is still f*ckin' sick. I love it and people need to stop complaining.
I don't think graphics make a game good. If the gameplay and storyline are crap who cares if it looks good?
I thought that the 8.5/10 score of gamespot was to low, Resident Evil 5 should have got a 9.5 for the graphics alone.
Oh but it has great graphics so who cares right? I really wish people were harder to satisfy than that.
RE4 and RE5 to me are failures because the story is awful. Those of you who've played the other Resident Evil's will know why. For the first like 3 or 4 games you're trying to take out Umbrella and then all of a sudden for RE4 they say Umbrella is gone. Not to mention the disappearance of zombies and unique features like needing ink ribbons to save your game. Way to go Capcom good job ruining the best survival/horror franchise. Now it's just another run-of-the-mill shoot'em up. Idiots.
@damo320 The developers of gears of war said it so that gears of war is indeed inspired by Resident Evil 4. Are you the maker of gears of war? I don't think so..so don't act like you know more than the developers itself. Resident Evil 5 is one of the greatest game ever.
xophaser, If you've played both you'd know they are not much alike apart from being 3rd person. Gears doesn't have an inventory system like RE. Gears is faster paced than RE. The enemies in Gears don't run at you and then slow down to a casual walk once they are a few feet from you. Fallen Gears enemies don't dissolve (very realistic) into goo which then turns into credits or ammo. Gears > RE5
lbjkurono23 Gamespot gave RE5 a 8.5/10 and the average of the critic scores of the game = 8.6/10. Where are you getting the 9.6/10 from?
I have to agree, great game. Great boss fights, great cut scenes, great gameplay. I think the only gripe I have with the game is the inventory system. You only have 9 slots for Sheva and for yourself. Each Armour piece, melee or/and bulletproof; require a slot each... Then you need space for your ammo and for each weapon. Yes there is strategy to it, but sometimes I need a grenade god damn it :) Well done Capcom, you can still make great games. Now about that $5 for the Versus Mode...
Someone said RE5 is the best 3rd person action game to date. I'm guessing they never played Gears of War. RE5 has feet of clay by comparison. Apparently Gamespot reviewers agree - with RE5 getting 8.5/10 compared with 9.6/10 and 9.0/10 for GoW and GoW2 respectively.
Resident Evil 5 is a amazing game, but i think not much has changed since the astonishing Resident Evil 4, besides co-op. Nevertheless this is an amazing game. Nice one Capcom.
Though I prefer RE4, I have to admit that it was fun going through this game on co-op. A good game imo, not surprised its seeing financial success.
RE 5 is the best third person action game up to date !!! Capcom is creating magic games and for that Thank you. By the way I can't wait for Lost Planet 2 !!! OMG.
Damn that was quick! I aint even got the full game yet, I'm still on the demo! And I thought Street Fighter 4 sold quick, well goodbuy to Call of Duty: World at War.
I'm not a fan of the action/adventure route the series is going. They took the survival horror out of a survival horror game. But I do have to say that so far I like RE5 a lot better than RE4 even though most would say the opposite.
stop & shoot and the over the shoulder cam should remain. hope fully they go back to its horror roots in the next installment. as for re5, its definitely a great game( in terms of gameplay its better than re4 though it takes a hit on the enemies imo) but to me it lost its identity in the later chapters(at one point it felt like uncharted). and to me this is where re5 falters.
I love this game. I have to say, it's my favorite game of all time. I'm currently addicted to it lol..... I'm about to be on my 3rd playthrough.
Completed this game in 2 sittings, haven't done that since MGS4. This game lived up to the hype and more imo. The series has taken a turn since Resident Evil 4 but I like it :)
Lol this game costs $500 where i live, and i bought a ps3 for $4000. Lol and. Even though $1 us is $6 tt (my currency) if u calculate it am payin more than $500 us for the ps3 and bout $80 for a game. Lol
The only reason gamespot gave it an 8.5 was because of the online co-op having some minor quirks! It just goes to show that some games just aren't made for the online world at all.
If Xbox360 & PS3 versions are so beautiful, than PC one will be much better!. This time Capcom is doing the optimization thing rather than outsourcing to other company (remember RE4 PC was outsourced to Sourcenext). Cant wait for the PC one.
Resident Evil 5 is no longer Resident Evil at all. It's lack of horror environments and events. It just looks like a shooting-type "Monster Hunter" game.
i'm beating the game right now, and i'm haappy to hear about a pc version i'll probably pick that up to so i don't have to pay for online with my 360.
