Resident Evil 5 demo blights 1.8M

Zombies are an atrocious lot. One moves into the neighborhood, and before week's end, they're everywhere: loitering in the parks, leaving rancid meat in the streets, and holing up decent, law-abiding citizens in the local shopping mall or pub. It's a miserable situation, really.

And so it was for the Resident Evil 5 demo, which was released exclusively through Xbox Live last Monday. Microsoft revealed today that in the first seven days that the sampler was available, more than 1.8 million copies of the Resident Evil 5 demo were distributed. PlayStation 3 gamers pining for a chance to shoot up a small African shanty town replete with brain-eating zombies can pick up the free trial beginning today.

The Resident Evil 5 demo gives gamers a taste of the survival horror shooter's two-player co-op mode, letting players fight their way through two sections of the full game and solve a handful of puzzles along the way. In addition to online multiplayer and single-player action with a computer-controlled teammate, the demo will include split-screen multiplayer.

Resident Evil 5 proper is expected to be released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on March 13. For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage of Resident Evil 5.

Conspiracyof1 - I understand where you're coming from; these are two different games with their own controls and style. Yet people do have a right to compare them. Dead space is essentially resident evil in space, to a certain extent. Dead space being a fresh series has clearly raised the bar with it's excellent controls, including walking and shooting, which works incredibly well. Resident evil, as good as it is, hasn't really evolved for the next generation, excluding the obvious co op system, the controls have basically remained unchanged from resi 4, which is why people are annoyed. Had they simply added a very slow walk forward/backwards shooting mechanic, the game would have still remained difficult, as the general aiming is slow enough to give a sense of fear.

This game is so kick ass. i played the demo and loved it, even though i did die a few times. bad thing is is that when your partner dies you fail the mission like wtf. Oh well be a challenge. Great graphics and great gameplay, can not wait for release :)

wow,soo many complaints this is to ALL YOU PPL WHO THINK THE GAME NEEDS RUN AND GUN CONTROLS AND COMPARE RE5 TO DEAD SPACE.maybe you should just go an play dead space if you like the controls soo much.if RE5 did have the move an shoot controls it would probably make the game too easy, or maybe it would make the game more difficult tryin to aim that laser sight while on the move, either way it would not work well for this game. anyway who wants an easy to beat new RE game? not me, i really like a challenge an this game will be a good one.just because RE5 and dead space are both realated to the suvival horror does not mean you should compare these 2 games, they are totally different when you think about it.so just dont play re5 if you don't like it,i mean after all it's meant to be a form of entertainment, not a game of stress.

At first I didn't like the controls either. But after playing it a few times and familiarizing myself with it I didn't mind it at all...

The reason the not moving while shooting fiasco is only being picked on now is because the infected are so much faster, it makes you feel like a tortoise in comparison. I hope the rumours of the other control scheme letting you move (slowly) and shoot is true, because if it is I'll be quite tempted to get this game.

everyone can breathe a sigh of relief. unless i heard incorrectly, there will be 2 options for controlling the game, according to an interview on g4tv with a marketing rep from capcom. one that will control like the demo, for the old school RE diehards, and one that will allow.....ready?....run-n-gun. i hope that the final iteration of the game will also have better options for mapping heals and weapon swaps. making those actions happen in realtime made the RE5 demo infuriating compared to RE4, where the action pauses. it doesn't create fear and tension, just frustration. granted it's just a demo, it didn't elicit much positive feedback as evident in most forums, especially for potential gamers new to the RE franchise. there's already a couple early reviews of the game on gamerankings.com averaging 90%. that's a good sign i guess.

This game is going to rock our collective socks off, my friends, whether your system of choice is PS3 or 360. I know this because I played the demo on PS3, and yes... my socks are now across the room. Don't quite understand the delay between getting the demo on each console, but hey... at least we can all experience an awesome game together when it drops next month.

i wish you can walk and shoot in the same time like dead space. badass graphics tho.

Someone just brought up a good point. I'm getting the game regardless, but the inventory menu is a lil' too hard to work with in REAL-TIME. I tried to switch to a nade while the chain saw guy was chasing me(I ran out of pistol bullets). I ran a couple of feet, tried to switch, got a lil too close too quick, and the next thing you know, I had to repeat the first step about 3 times. Guess what, I think the 3rd time on this "Charm" ended up a lil' messy lol.

Thanks Capcom i will save my money for a game that deserves the $60 , such as Killzone 2! I dunno y they dont make RE like RE1 2 or even 3! i miss the old games!

This game to me isn't meant to be played alone. Plus... It's still a demo! Quit your complaining about lack of this or that...

Um' is it just me or did everyone else download a demo completely void of puzzles too, unless the puzzle was figuring out how to keep Shiva from totally sucking it up.

On a wide scale, I love the RE series and I plan on getting 5 just based off of the simple fact that i've enjoyed just about every game(excluding Survivor). The Demo was great, and I can't wait to do online Co-op with friends(I have a few lol). But, on a small scale, I feel like RE is no longer a horror-type of game. I miss the zombies so much, and the roming around the messed up streets at night time, just the whole atmosphere is what I miss. I wish they could bring the zombies back, with a "I AM LEGEND" vibe. Everybody from S.T.A.R.S. has been in other countries doing their "thang". How bout they reunite in the U.S. to find that a SUPER T-Virus(sucks I know) has messed up certain parts of the US and soon the world. I want stars team to reunite, and I think that lil plot summary would be a GREAT way to end the RE saga.....

@HelpMe454 and anybody else who posts like him, that post is funny but rediculously stupid, she might seem like ashley with a gun but i think you just suck at this game, sheva kicks ass i hate people complaining about the ai OR the controls. its not at all clunky its not even that hard to get good at. the game is just amazingly well paced and you have to learn to sync in tune with it... MAYBE watch some youtube vids of the pros playing. the first time i played re4 i sucked but it was still great fun, and after watching the rpos im sick at this game @akiwak i killed the axe wielding decapotator... he drops a gold ring with a red ruby and is not very difficult. use the explosive barrels and grenades, punch him when he is down on his knees and shotgun him to the head 3 times to make him drop to his knees.

I played the demo and died alot. Can the guy with the huge axe be killed? I knifed a lot of enemies and save most ammo for the guy and he still didn't die!! Looking forward to some co-op help from my PSN buddies.

the game is going to be awesome..except i feel that the aiming was a little slow. i mean when you're in aiming position, moving the aim in the direction you want is slow. hopefully there is a setting to change this. Played Silent Hill: Home Coming, and i did not like the camera movement, slow and frustrating, but good game over-all.

i'm terrible at these games, but i can never get enough of them, and i've now died at least 50 times in the first board of the demo, and i'm going back for more. Beautiful looking also

WOW, what a demo.. it had running scared at first try, but after my online co op experience i cant wait to play through this game with all my PS3 buddies.

I'm definitly getting this game on release date. Demo was amazing especialy when you play with a friend online or on the side with you, share the ammos, herbs or exchange weapons etc...surviving alone is hard so co-op is a way to go and more fun.. = )

who cares about running and shooting? re4 was the same thing and it got game of the year in 2005 didn't it?

I like this game! I like the single player mode. The AI is great if you know how to work her. Lol! It brings a new meaning of survival, especially with the real time menu. God that sent chills down my spine trying to find a nice place to heal with all those enemies rushing you. Not only do you have to worry about yourself, you worry about your partner who can actually help and vise-versa. Though she does use ammo up rather quickly with the handgun. but the game is cool! Online is fun, but strangely I can't play as Sheva because it would kick me off, but when i play as Chris, runs like silk.

this game is great on the 360. it really forces you, in a good way, to work together with your teammate. ill definitely buy it

I like this game and like the co-op. It's going to be just a renter though. CAPCOM needs to get with the times and make this a real action game. Not being able to move and shoot/knife is plain out bad. Especially since the zombies can lunge at you with their melee weapons.

HelpMe454

i'm i die hard horror fan so i love the resident evil games ( i'm wearin' a resident evil t shirt right now) but this isn't a resident evil game its just another action game, this is just from the demo but i really hope i'm wrong, single player mode sucks i thought i'd have a decient ai partner but all i got was ashley from re4 with a gun, usein' up herbs and gettin' killed.

@Jets78 How did you play in First person mode? I didn't see that option. I actually like the 3rd person view/controls, but I'd be curious to try the other way.

@akechi419 That arguement that the all the RE didn't have the move and shoot is ridiculous. I am sorry but not being to move and shoot in games today is ridiculous. I understand why you didn't move and shoot in the first RE and it fine back then due to the way the camera was angled. But the camera angle has changed, that should change also. I am not wanting the guy to be able to do flips, sprint and shoot all at the same time. I am just saying a little movement wouldn't hurt. I can't even hold a knife and move at the same time. I wouldn't be mad if the game started out explaining that main guy was in an accident and is mildly retarded and can not do two things at once,

I was actually surprised when I played the demo. I thouhgt it was gonna be totally crap but it isn't.... Sure it's pretty clunky but I think that's to be expected from a RE game. It's a console game and I hope it never comes to PC, since that kind of gameplay would be pure pain. With consoles it's fine and it plays pretty well. Only problems I have or "had", in the demo, was the level design, which was pretty simple and straight forward, and the AI, both the enemy and Sheva. Sheva works good enough to not cause me too much frustration (at least in the demo) but playing it in co-op with a friend is definately the way to go I'd think. Anyway, this looks like it could be the first xbox 360 game I'll pick up, altho I have to keep my eye on it for a while and see how it turns out and how solid the final product will end up.

The move and shoot subject needs to stop. If know one likes it then leave the board dont complain cause all your doing is whining. I like the term "If it aint broke, dont fix it". and since re1 i had no problems with the gameplay, the only thing rough was the camera which they fixed since re4. Since RE4 they have been going with more Suspense than Horror which was fine by me, Having bad a$$ enemies pop out of nowhere is Dead spaces job now which makes it different in that respect so dont compare. This is why we get a cutscene before someone bad ass is coming for us (ie chainsaw dude). To close, even fall out 3 leads by example as far as steady aiming and not moving and shooting, sure its there but how well can you kill something while running, stop aim and shoot or use vacs which shows ur dude staying put while owning in precision. Think about it.

did every body forget that u can play the game in 2 modes 3rd person mode and first person shooter mode i played the first prson mode and it,s more fun.

i personally think they have taked resi 4 and improved the graphics, thats it. i was expecting to be able to move and shoot but i dont think capcom have been bothered to change anything. well yes you now get a real-time inventory like of dead space but i dont like the fact you get damaged every time you try and change weapon. im still gonna get this game but it wasnt what i was expecting. sorry.

You guys are such chickens like "Frustrating gameplay to say the least!" the game is quick how can that be frustrating? Only if you ain't got any patience! "The controls are crap! You can't run and gun!" That's what Survival Horror is all about! So if you want attention don't go badmouthing games you have never even heard about and go comparing it with mediocre games like Left4Dead and Dead Space! I know you guys must have your opinion but I'm gonna buy this cuz I played the demo and I loved it and because I believe a pro's review over the comment of some guys who just don't know anything about Survival Horror and about the RE series. P.S. - If you think Left4Dead is scary, grow some nuts guys, I played it at a friends house and didn't even get scared.

Why is everyone so OMG about the graphics. Yeah sure, it looks great, but the fact that it, like so many next gen uber-games, loves piling in the bloom lighting effect everywhere. More bloom so you can't notice the faults. Look round the corner and you gotta pause so you turn down the contrast settings on your TV. The last few gen of games, designers loved their fancy lens flare effect but now it's the full on BLOOM of light. What next you may think? Lightning shoots out of your TV and zaps your eyeballs with advertising. Nah.

It has the best graphics on for mulitplatform, but Gears of War had better in game graphics, while Resident Evil 5 has better cutscene visuals. However Metal Gear Solid 4 still has the best graphics I have ever played. It looks more real, life like. I guess Killzone 2 might best down MGS4 wow!

The only prob I had with the online multiplayer was that the other guy was a douche and hogged all the ammo. So by the time I opened the door on the other side for him to get out, I had run out of ammo b/c he didn't distribute any of it to me... and if I die you die. Also, did anyone else notice its only being run at 720p resolution? I wonder if the final product will be run at full 1080p?
