Red Faction Armageddon downloadable tie-in en route
Red Faction tie-in to hit XBLA, PSN three to four months before full sequel's March release; Saints Row, "big brands" getting same treatment.
Transmedia promotion has become a key buzzword at THQ, and the publisher has already detailed ways in which it will apply this strategy to Volition's upcoming Red Faction Armageddon. Namely, THQ said during its E3 2010 webcast that it would air the big-budget SyFy-produced Red Faction telefilm the same week in March 2011 that it launches Armageddon for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
Armageddon's promotion won't be limited to expanded media, however. Speaking to CVG, THQ executive vice president of core games Danny Bilson said that the franchise would also benefit from the publisher's strategy to bring "our big brands" to Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network.
"There's going to be a Red Faction arcade game that ships about three or four months before Armageddon," Bilson told CVG. "What's interesting is that we will sell it to the fans, it will have content you can download that is TV show-related, it will build up to the new game and also we can use it to drive pre-orders, too; we can give codes and aspects of it, we can give the whole thing away."
Bilson did not divulge specific details about what gamers can expect from the Red Faction extension. However, the executive did say that the publisher is planning "multi-faceted minigames" as revenue generators and marketing tools for other franchises as well, including Saints Row.
"You'll see it on Red Faction, you'll see it on Saints Row and a couple of others," he said. "Not only that, we have a comic book coming on it as well."
THQ had not responded to requests for clarification on the Red Faction arcade game as of press time. For more on Red Faction Armageddon, check out GameSpot's first impressions from this year's E3.
The last Red Faction released was awsome.. And IMO it had some of the best 3rd person shooter multiplayer in some time.. As for the single player, it was lacking any story, besides the very few cut-scenes you got.. But it was still pretty fun.. I think if they go for a more cinematic single player this time around while keeping the fun and over the top multiplayer (ESPECIALLY with the jetpacks, rhino packs, ect) they'll have a very good chance of makeing Red Faction a AAA Title/Series (not that it isnt alrdy); but more importantly, for them atleast, they'd be makeing Red Faction a cash-cow.
I am slightly worried the way Red Faction is going, but I shall reserve comment for now.
@Fusco1980, yea i know but still... i wud have preferred taking the action back to earth and some more vehicle based multiplayer etc
the last one was somewhat enjoyable, I really liked the destructible environments, hopefully this one is at least as enjoyable, if not better
Let's get Red Faction out of the way and start getting some Saints Row info!
I have so hopes for this game
I'll take it if its worth the Price
What is the difference between a "key buzzword", and a "buzzword"? "Transmedia promotion" is two buzzwords, not one. A real editor would treat readers with respect by cutting the marketing jargon from this story.
As long as Armagedon isin't a bad port for the PC i'm good, and no GFWL!!!!
As long as its good. I am down.
How about instead of a tie in just rerelease Red Faction with updated graphics on XBLA. Still interested on what they pull out especially if the tie in is being done by Volition.
Red Faction Guerrilla was a great game and surprised me how great it really was. Armageddon looks to be just as great!
Sold. RFG was awesome.

I'm sold. I loved RFG. I'm sure this will be just swell.
i'll get dead space 2 instead thanks
meh,not too interested.
I feel bad for the execs that came up with this. You can make all the hoops you want to take our money, but that doesn't mean we'll jump through them.
Sick of seeing the same buzzcut tough guy star in every single game.
the first game was awesome, but the others ranged from just ok to it's better than a film tie in game.
Cool.
awesome
I hope it isnt just DLC cuz I sold my copy... then I got a free one with darksiders and gave it to a friend
If it's free I'll get it. And then if it's good I'll get the game. But I doubt it.
They're being too ambitious. The game wasn't THAT good.
This could be cool.. It really depends on how good the downloadable game is..
