THQ says RF: Guerrilla successor, Homefront due by April 2011; open-world crime sequel, post-post-apocalyptic follow-up, and Warhammer 40,000 spin-off due during subsequent fiscal year.
Following THQ's holiday quarter earnings report today, CEO and president Brian Farrell discussed strategy with analysts in a conference call. The suburban Los Angeles-based company's tack is to release at least two titles targeted at the "core gamer each year." For the current fiscal year, which ends March 31, the company pointed to Red Faction: Guerrilla and Darksiders as its offerings for dedicated players.
For the coming fiscal year ending March 31, 2011, THQ is again planning a double shot of core games. Up first will be Homefront, the military shooter set in 2027 inside a North Korea-occupied United States. The first-person shooter is in development at Kaos Studios (Frontlines: Fuel of War) for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC and will be written by John Millius, the writer-director of the Cold War-era cult classic Red Dawn.
THQ's second big game will be a successor to Volition's hit Red Faction: Guerrilla, the third game in the Mars-set sci-fi action series. First revealed last April, the unnamed sequel was set for THQ's 2012 fiscal year, which begins on April 1, 2011. However, Farrell said the game's release had been moved up to capitalize on the popularity of the critically acclaimed Guerrilla and promised "robust online gameplay" and increased environmental destruction. He promised that both it and Homefront would be a major presence at THQ's booth at the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo this June, as would the still-unseen Warhammer 40,000 massively multiplayer game.
Looking ahead to THQ's 2012 fiscal year, Farrell promised "accelerated" growth courtesy of three more core games: Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine, a Darksiders sequel, and a new Saints Row game. The former game had been on the company's 2011 docket, and the second was first mentioned alongside Red Faction 4's reveal last April.
As for the Saints Row sequel, it will likely arrive nearly three years after Saints Row 2 debuted to solid reviews and multimillion-unit sales. Farrell emphasized that the game would be a "third generation" of the franchise, which he called "the most complex" type to build. This echoed comments made by Volition associate producer Dan Sutton, who said in October 2008 that his studio has "started work on Saints Row 3, and we have a new direction we want to go in…which we, of course, can't talk about."
Hopefully in SR3 they will return the amazing radio from SR1, and have 4 player coop because two ppl is kinda boring.
Lets just hope THQ and Volition actually support their PC SR3 title unlike SR2 and don't shaft us again with a huge katana...
man saints row 3 is going to be great game. I trust in THQ!!! The first is intresting! Hope the third so so so...
Please don't let this new direction SR3 is going in ruin the pure fun it gave.. plus SR2 was one of the most enjoyable game experiences for me in along time
Looking forward to Saints Row 3, number 2 was brillaint, makes me wish I had a 360 so I could play the first one.
i liked saint's row 2 single player but the multiplayer was terrible, if it had multiplayer similar to GTAIV i would of played it more. but i agree SR3 should not go the same way as GTA, GTA was good but lost out on fun with the whole Seriousness of the phisics, looks and feel of it.
SR3 improvements would be co-op designed in the story (i hope at least) more new awesome weapons and vehichles and ALOT more rag doll pyshics and zombies. Also for space marines: "While the enemies of the Emperor still draw breath there can be no peace" - Force Commander Gabriel Angelos.
Looking forward to everything but Saints Row. The first SR was interesting, but SR2 was... well Saints Row has become everything the public believes about the GTA series. All the lies and slander about how horrible the content of GTA is, that's exactly what SR has become. Not interested. Hopefully the next RF brings back Geo mod tech so I can finally destroy roads. And a better memory system so things stay destroyed longer.
I'm still willing to put money down that Saints Row 3 will be an RPG. Both because that would stop the whole "GTA-clone" nonsense and because I honestly don't see how they could push character creation any further without character development.
I absolutely know the "new direction" they're going to go with SR3. Something that has been done in a video game before. Are you ready for it? Hookers. Yep. Believe it.
Red faction 3 was the first one i played so i dont know how it was FPS....The third person perspective was pretty fine for me...not too addictive for me waiting for the 4th one though :)
They said they were going in a new direction on SR2 as well, so I am not expecting any drastic changes. (I mean, SR2 was just SR1 but with much much more, not that i'm complaining. :P)
Well I hope SR3 doesn't go the way of GTA, too realistic, boring, clumsy controls and quite possibly the worst driving I've ever seen in a game. Bad hand-to-hand combat, too many chase missions, I could on and on about how bad GTA became but I'll stop now.
I REALLY hope they do something w/ the physics. I sometimes get PO'd at SR2 for crappy AI and lame driving physics.
@ inaka_rob GTA4 is The Godfather to Saints Row 2's Scarface. Some people like it a little slower paced and realistic. I personally love playing both. GTA is fun as hell to fly parachute around in and Saints Row is killer co-op. Just my opinion.
It amazing that every time I say that GTA4 wasnt really that fun, people tend to give me thumbs up. And when other people say they thought Saints Row was more fun that GTA4, they get thumbs up. Its seems to be the consensus that GTA4 is a good game, somewhat realistic, but not very fun. Why in the world did it get a perfect 10???? shouldn't a PERFECT game at least be fun to play. A math proof is interesting, realistic, but not very fun. I wouldnt give a math proof a perfect 10. Well.... let me think. If someone paid me too, or gave me cool stuff, I might give it a perfect 10... makes you wonder.
"I hate waiting for good games" seriously? I sort of know what you mean. but at the same time, the industry has gotten to the point where they are making so many AAA titles you have to be very picky in what you play. Add on top of that multiplayer, and there is hardly anytime to play anything else. look at half the people who play Modern Warfare 2. They have like 3 or 4 thousand gamer points becuase they just play 1 game online. I have a stack that is still 10 high from games I picked up around Christmas time. All these delays are a welcome in a small way. But I am a little bit of a hypocrite because if I had RF4 or SR3 right now, I would push that stack off the table and play those 2 games FIRST!!!
I never had much of a problem with screen taring or framerate and I got Darksiders the first day it came out.
They didnt even say anything bout darksider 2, which should be awesome if they add some new features to the darksiders formula, like maybe side missions?
@Mega Third one sucked? News to me. I enjoyed the third one and am looking forward to the fourth one, of course, I didn't set my expectations to high so perhaps thats why I wasn't disappointed (like everyone else)
Well, if RF:4 sucks as much as the 3rd one. No purchase for me! Going 3rd person was a bad move for the developer. It lost everything that made the first 2 titles great. Saints Row will never be GTA, but I'm tired of them pushing out lackluster games.
No argue that saints row is a more entertaining game series than gta with its latest release. But you still have to aknowledge the dry sort of humor passing through Liberty City, while telling a great story. But as i said before, SR for pure fun and destruction, GTA4 for a more serious take on things. And yea, lets get Darksiders 2 as soon as possible, gotte love the apocalypse :D
@twztid13 they released an update for xbox360 that fixes the screen tearing and framerate issues for darksiders
If they don't announce a PC version for Space Marine there will be blood. Come on, Relic is making it! We bought all Dawn of War games!
Bring on Red Faction 4! Fps or 3rd person, a first day buy for me. Saints row 3 also! Love you Volition
Yeah, SR2 was awesome and very addictive gameplay....for me i liked it better than GTA4....i hope they make the SR3 ever more better....
just doing all the side missions for saints row 2 were long enough, fun but long.. then on top of that fun brutal and funny main missions. and u could just go around and have fun messing with the vehicles and crazy stuff they put in it like the apc.. gta 4, fun missions and dating side missions where u get to go bowling!!! too fun.. and on the side u can......... drive really fast... oh go to take jumps with ur motorcycle... which u can also do in sr2.. personally sr2 smokes gta4... cant touch gta:sa tho..
