What if something like this becomes the standard? Would there be any need for a console anymore? I mean if the price was to drop too this would end up being the standard, right?

Today at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show, peripheral maker Razer renamed its Windows 8 "Project Fiona" gaming tablet to simply "Edge." In addition to giving the device a new name, Razer revealed specifications, pricing, and timing information for a base model and a Pro version.
The base version, which will retail for $1,000, runs on Windows 8 and includes a 10.1-inch touch screen, an Intel Core i5 chip, an Nvidia GT 640M GPU, 4GB of RAM, and a 64GB solid state drive. The $1,300 Pro model features a faster Core i7 chip, 8GB of RAM, and either 128GB or 256GB SSD.
Both versions include a front-facing 2MP high-definition camera and will be available sometime during Q1 (January-March 2013).
Various peripherals for the Razer Edge will also be available upon launch later this year. Most relevant to gamers is the Gamepad controller, which is now an optional feature for the device. This add-on (pictured above) features two controllers with backlit action buttons and analog sticks. This peripheral will retail for $250.
Other peripherals available for the Razer Edge are a keyboard dock ($200), a docking station ($100), extended battery pack ($50), and a 65-watt power adapter ($50).

Many people seem to miss the point of this super gaming tablet...
It has better specs than $1000+ Ultrabooks which doesn't even have descrete GPUs and touchscreens.
I don't know. The thing works as a tablet, console, handheld console, and a laptop all while being pretty powerful for it's shape and size. I fail to see how it's incredibly overpriced as people proclaim.
@Grovilis Y'see, people aren't exactly made of money.
If you broke all that stuff down you mentioned, yes, it is somewhat cheaper to own this than all four of those you mentioned. But that doesn't detract from the fact $1,000 is still incredibly steep.

I really like to see this, I really do. But I think Razer needs a reality check. When I am gaming with my none Razer gear and I need to go do a chore. Like getting groceries that keep me from starving. I am sure as hell not gonna pick up this and play it while I am driving to the supermarket even though there probarly aren't any regulations in my countries against gaming while driving. Or playing it while I am in line at the supermarket, think I am nerdie enouch. And I am sure as hell not spending $1000 on something like this.
However this is a interresting development, being able to run a PC version of Windows 8.
1 Like I dont get it... instead of marketing it as a gaming tablet, Windows should just call it an Xbox Portable or something so it attracts more customers. I really don't see people buying a tablet specifically for gaming at that price to play something like Angry Birds. Call me ignorant but this is how I feel.
lol, ppl always complaining about price. If it were any cheaper, it would be built with crap materials, cheap and underdeveloped technology thus, not making it the product is it. Yet, they'll probably buy an apple product without hesitation. You get what you pay for. The $1000 starting point for essentially a i5 gaming pc/tablet with an ssd, 4 gigs and dedicated gpu is not a bad price im sorry. Now, the $250 controller accessory is a different story...
@rahmie0789 Have you seen what the Chinese are putting out for portable gaming at a tenth of the price? There just isn't a 1000 dollar portable console market. Proof will be in the sales. Buy it. Seriously, someone with that kind of money to burn ought to support their efforts.
I mean i understand that its pricey and stuff. But some people actualy love this so stop hating the idea its great. Just because you cant afford it doesnt mean it sucks ass, I see a watch which is like 5000 dollars i dont go like fuck that its bad...

I think most of the people posting here don't realize what this "thing" is. It's a full fledged PC, not a handheld or a tablet. Check prices for similar items (Asus Eee Slate and such), 1000$ is not that much considering what it is.
A laptop with that stuff inside costs 40% less, but this thing is truly "handheld", with touchscreen, force feedback and so on.
The specs are fine cos the display is small. The base model would surely suck with a Dell2711, but we are talking about a 10.1'' monitor and not a 27'' one.
2 doubts, the first is about how comfortable is to play for hours with this thing, since it surely weights more than a 3DS or a Vita. The second... battery life, those things (tablet-like PCs) never shone for being fit for long sessions.
Rest assured that it's a joke to compare this ""tablet"" to Ipad or Galaxy tab, price wise and performance wise.
wow...they wanted feed back and they are sure getting it. All negative because of the price. I can see why it is expensive. it's basically a touch screen computer. not a basic Tablet that is good for browsing and some crap games. it has all the inputs and out puts touch etc plus it has vibration and proper control sticks. it makes sense but in order to sell that they will have to make it about 500 bucks.

While I think the specs on this are a little underwhelming currently and the price is about $200 too high, I actually think this could be an awesome machine. Hopefully when the next version of the Edge Pro is released, it will have a 1080p screen, have something at least equivalent to a nVidia GT650m, and include the keyboard dock for $1200.
i7, GTX660, 8GB RAM, 500GB SSD would, albeit just barely, justify its price. This setup is laughable.

Ummm..this is the article about the $1000 GAMING tablet right? And don't get me wrong, I would love to play PC games, I just would never dish out the cash to buy a computer that could play them all.
@jhcho2 well i just spent about 1000 euros building a new PC i7 3770k (wish i had now gone with the sandy bridge version 100 bucks cheaper) with 16gb black mumba Ram, 128 SSD, 750 PSU and 660ti OC and asus mobo 3TB HD...Works very well...though hardly portable. If money was no issue i'd prob be dumb enough to buy this ! :D
