[UPDATE] Ubisoft confirms Rayman Origins follow-up is in works by creator Michel Ancel and Montpellier studio; video shows real-world toys interacting with game.
The video for Rayman Legends indicates the new title will be a 2D side-scrolling platformer and will add fresh characters, online gameplay, and near-field communication (NFC) support for the Wii U version.
Earlier this year, Nintendo confirmed that the Wii U's tablet controller would support NFC technology. This was most recently used in Activision's Skylanders: Spyro's Adventures. In that game, players use real-world action figures to alter gameplay within the gameworld.
In Rayman Legends, it appears the technology will operate in much the same way. In the video, a user is seen placing a heart-shaped toy on the Wii U's tablet, which then dispenses in-game replenishing health. Also shown in the video is a Raving Rabbids toy, which, when placed on the Wii U tablet, brings the zany hare into the game.
An Assassin's Creed hero Ezio Auditore da Firenze figurine is also highlighted in the video, though the footage cuts to black before any in-game action of the character is shown.
[UPDATE] A Ubisoft representative confirmed with GameSpot that Rayman Legends is in development at Ubisoft Montpellier and is being handled by series creator Michel Ancel.
"This video was intended as a purely internal demonstrative video, and in no way represents the final game, the final console, or their features," reads a line from the statement. "This video was destined for internal production teams who often create game prototypes with work in progress development kits. Ubisoft confirms the development of Rayman Legends handled by Michel Ancel and his team in Montpellier."
A Rayman Origins sequel is not a surprise. Earlier this week, images from a marketing survey provided the first glimpse at a new entry in the franchise. Many of those same images and features are present in the leaked video, including new environments and four-player support.
Rayman Origins shipped last November to a warm critical reception for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii, with subsequent releases for the PlayStation Vita, PC, and Mac.
@Victorious_Fize Good point mate. Seems there are a lot of sheep on here who just like everything they're told to like and won't accept anyone else's opinion.
@shanethewolf It is common for GameSpot users to dislike anything that hints of criticism for a game they like, even if it was made by the most well intended fans of the game.
where is the new vid ????!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rayman Legends video leaks ????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@cf_Kage Yes I'm sure it will. Don't know why people thumbed down your comment. They almost seem to want the Wii U to be underpower. Fanboyism at it's finest.
this trailer is great i saw it. i like both the rendered display and hand drawn artwork very nice quailty game for a concept/reveal trailer maybe it might change in the final build hmm?~
The new rendering looks good, but it seems to have more of a "rendered" look than the more hand-drawn look of Origins. I actually prefer the visuals of Origins better. Maybe they'll tweak it before the game releases to make it look better.
Looks incredible!! Origins had awesome visuals, but looked kinda flat, whereas I like how they've given Legends more shading and depth. I'm so glad to see there's still a market for 2d games.
It just breaks my heart that Michael Ancel isn't on Beyond Good And Evil 2 yet, seriously, it just breaks my heart. But to be more on topic, Rayman Origins was good, slick artsyle and slick gameplay. But I'm not sure how they'd improve on it exponentially, I personally had my fill of it after one game
Well if you don't like Super Mario Bros and Sonic the Hedgehog no you won't Rayman. Oh its not a 3D Mario clone it does deserve a high score but then they complain all games are a like. Reviewers need to compare games to similar games not to what they think is a good game. What you do is> a> find a reviewer with similar taste in games. or b> try it yourself. reviews are garbage.
Did you guys see the video? The game looks amazing, seriously it looks like the artstyle got better which means the Wii U definitly got some power, Rayman Origins was awesome but now it seems its gonna expand beyond and make it more awesome for this sequel! Blab all you want but you cant deny the concept looks awesome! I cant wait for this, and most importantly i hope its a Wii U Launch Title
I just bought Rayman Origins on Steam for my PC. The game is INCREDIBLE. I don't understand how people can give it an 8.5.
The WiiU stuff looks like crap, with the gimmicky toys. And only 1 player is using the touch screen and everyone else is stuck with the remote. I hope the game music is a lot better then the trailer music. Being better than Origins will be no easy task.
@mario-nin-freak - Yep, the one on IGN is. The one here is from Rayman Origins. Pretty impressed. I think the little Ninty will be quite the work horse
@FreakAche doesnt really matter since its gunna be running unreal engine3 :p go youtube the samaritan tech demo......... stunning.
@Fayt1986 Interesting if true, although I don't really put a lot of stock in next gen rumour-mongering
@FreakAche its from an older story not sure if it was on gamespot or ign..... a dev working on the wii-u said its powerfull and with very slight tweaking will even run the next unreal engine.
I saw the trailer. I hope this isn't another skylanders where I have to buy figures to get the most out of the game. I am sure figures will be optional, but I am also sure you are missing some of the Wii U content.
the video is pretty but it doesnt show any of the wii-u power...... lets not forget that it can run the new unreal engine the next gen will use.
Can't wait! Hopefully, Rayman Legends either won't ship during the busy holiday season like last year or will be offered at a discount price from the get-go.
You know there's going to be fight over who get to used the Wii U tablet. While the others have Wii motes. Nintendo needs to make another controller Wave bird 2
I'm not advertising, shoot, I don't even have an account there, but on ign.com you can find the leaked video and it looks SICK.. Even though I won't be buying a WiiU for awhile after it comes out. I always let the past generation fade totally before moving on, cheaper that way. Mattaghetti! (YouTube it)
http://techland.time.com/2012/04/27/watch-leaked-rayman-legends-trailer-shows-wii-u-in-action/ A video in the link. I see a lot of potential, though a lot of potential bad things as well. The change in art style isn't too bad, but I prefered the Origins; this one's good, but it seems like 2.5D. The figurines look pretty bad. I imagine Ezio would be a bad fit, and I reeeeally don't want to be reminded of those bloody rabbids (hopefully that's just a wii-u exclusive function, though). New characters could be good, if they fit.
Saw the leaked vid on YouTube. I must say, I am amazed, Ubisoift managed make me excited for this game, and a nice glimpse of the Wii U. Looks like an awesome trailer to be shown at E3 and blow everyone's mind, though it's too late now that it's leaked. :P My only concern is those figurines. I sense a whole lot of $$$.
And for those who caught the video this is near proof wii-u is AT LEAST on par with 360/ps3 , it looked pretty damn amazing!
Okay, now I'm hyped up! Rayman is back! Keep it comin Ubisoft! By the way I would like to see those stupid rabbids being kicked by Rayman.;)
@Chico_Azteca I doubt it, considering Ubisoft announced Assassins' Creed III for Wii U a few months ago and they didn't get in trouble.
I love playing Rayman games since the first one came out and I know this will be great like the other ones and I hope they do a HD version of the first one because I never got the chance to finish it don't remember what happen to my game it was MIA (>_<) I was in the level with the instruments and clouds with lighting shooting down on you which was kind of difficult to get through but never gave up on it and if they do, do a HD version of the fist one I hope they change the password system to save data so you won't need to write the password and enter it every time you continue where you left out.
Dammit!! I already have enough games to play, now more?! Ugh, I want this game so badly now even though we've barely seen much yet. Rayman Origins was my own personal GOTY last year. Definitely looking forward to this. My concern though is Michel Ancel: he IS working on this game, right? Please say yes! Also, what will ever happen to Beyond Good & Evil 2? Ubisoft confirmed they're targeting next-generation consoles instead but that sounds as though they're just afraid to release it. *sigh*
Very excited for this. Though the only new feature that was boasted and looked cool was the new engine. So let's hope they have more goodies to show that aren't exclusive to the Wii U -_-
