I personally am a little amazed at the price, but not too shocked. I just can't believe that I can buy 2 wii systems at gamestop for the price of the 3ds! I 'm still getting it though
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata says the positive public reaction to the handheld this past June led to premium pricing.
This week saw Nintendo stir up the game industry by dating the launch of the 3DS. However, it also generated some alarm amongst gamers by revealing the handheld's price--¥25,000, or about $300 dollars, according to today's exchange rates. That makes it the most expensive handheld the company has ever launched, as the DS was only ¥15,000 when it went on sale in 2006, when the dollar was much stronger versus the yen.
Now, in a Bloomberg Japan interview translated by GameSpot, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata explained the reasons behind the premium price point. He said one of the most important factors was the positive reaction to the handheld at "a public showing in June," presumably referring to its unveiling at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo. When asked if the price was too high, he said the company felt that the handheld would still sell well despite its relatively high cost.
When it does launch, the 3DS will come in both Aqua Blue and Cosmo Black hues. It will also be bundled with a 2GB SD card that will be able to store downloadable content. The handheld will also feature a Virtual Console service for Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles, while several classic N64 titles will be rereleased with 3D support.
Nintendo first announced the 3DS during its E3 2010 press conference, laying out a sizable number of first-party titles, including Kid Icarus: Uprising, Star Fox 64 3D, Paper Mario, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Later, the publisher also confirmed a strong lineup of third-party support for the 3DS, with titles like Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D - The Naked Sample, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Pro Evolution Soccer, Dead or Alive 3D, Resident Evil Revelations, Ninja Gaiden, Pac-Man & Galaga, and Dragon Ball all getting the 3D treatment, as well as a spate of unnamed titles from developers such as Harmonix, Take-Two, Atlus, AQ Interactive, Disney Interactive Studios, Hudson Soft, Majesco, Marvelous Entertainment, and Sega.
you people do realize that price is for Japan the U.S. price is 250 still way to much rather 200 but still have plan's to buy it just not on day one.
"because you liked it, we can get away with charging you more"?????? wow, for 250 bucks according to gamestop preorder price, I think I'd rather get the 360 I've been putting off forever. wait for the 3DS lite or something. I'm not a fan of any one system, I'm a fan of any game system that has games I'd like to play. But the prices are getting out of hand.
I'll just wait for a price drop, my ps3 is keeping me very entertained atm, so i'm in no rush to buy it at full price whatsoever
For 300 Dollars it would be a wiser choice (and a smarter one) to Get an Xbox360 or PS3. you are just throwing your money away if you buy the 3DS. its not even worth it.
Also keep in mind that it looks as if it's going to come with some cool games that will entertain for quite a while. Sounds like the shooting game will be included... and I see plenty of entertainment out of that alone.
Okay, to all the people that are hating on the 3DS. Go to Wikipedia, type in 3DS, read the whole article, then come back and tell me EXACTLY what part about it you don't like, without saying "3D is a fad" because that's your personal opinion, not a fact, or "it costs too much" because it's a 3D video game system, it's gonna cost a lot.
Well, at least he's being honest about it, though he's probably also being smug. I'm not quite ready to spend $300 on a new system, especially when updated versions are probably just around the corner.
why does he say it's a high price? with a $20 SD card, probably $10 dollar dock and the HUGE amount of new features? I kinda expected it.
How is positive public reaction justification for price gouging? Much less, how is it any reason to give this excuse to the press?
Gamespot (http://e3.gamespot.com/best-of-e3-2010/special-achievement/index.html?page=8 ) "Nintendo's 3DS takes our Best of E3 prize for its screen alone." "every editor that held the 3DS in his or her hands walked away awestruck" "we're already getting impatient just thinking about it." It's not just Gamespot, every gaming news outlet puts way too much empahsis on previews and pre-release hype. (Everyone should know you don't buy anything until the reviews come out, right?) Maybe the gaming press could be a bit more objective and a bit less willing PR machine extensions for game companies and publishers. We as gamers need to stop letting pre-release hype get us all starry eyed and irrational.
wow.. this I think makes what 5 remakes of the ds.. and I think they remade the gba the same amount of times..wow nintendo get your act together make something new and stop trying to renew old stuff already
wow!! look at that! No way i will pay the same price for a 3DS then i paid for my PS3 slim. Anyway they don't have any game i really want to play at launch i'm not saying they aren't any good game most of them are awesome but also most of them i have played them so much on the N64 that i know them by heart and i don't feel like wasting money on game i already finished 10-20 times.
hmmm, premium pricing for a Nintendo handheld... Virtual Boy memories anyone? _________________________________________ Satoru Iwata explained the reasons behind the premium price point "..." was the positive reaction to the handheld at "a public showing in June," _________________________________________ Translation from japanese : This is much better since we can gouge people because they really crapped their pants when they saw it, instead of having to create some "rarity" *smirk* at the beginning to reap in the cash... E3 2010 attendees, this is all your fault! Learn to act, pretend you don't care when sampling new hardware FFS! Holding your nose while playing would be perfect... Also puking a little in your mouth every ten minutes should help to keep next-gen consoles prices lower... --------------------------------------------------- I'm just kidding of course, I never planned to buy one, I kinda expected the price to be ludicrous since it legitimately looked awesome... but thats not why I didn't want one, I just don't have a use for portable gaming, I'm 5 minutes on foot from my job and when I'm not working I'm in my apartment with a around dozen consoles and a few PCs... That is all, thank you ^^
As much as I would want one..there's no way in hell Im paying $300...all the best to them if they think they're gonna sell.
300 dollars for a handheld? wow thats way too much. i think most people agree with me in that 300 is way too much, seriously the wii costs less than that. They should drop the price before i seriously consider buying one, right now im just fine with my DS Lite, its still good although DSi has some nice improvements, 250 or less sounds about right to me, they probably are going to lower the price though or thier never going to sell it in America, i hope its not like the psp go, overpriced and not many people buy it
@Xcite79 The Ipod touch does way more then the 3DS. The ipad is completely overpriced so I won't even begin to go on that subject but in terms of the Itouch or Iphone they do way more then a 3DS. Apple overprice there products but at the same time It does probably 20x more then what the 3DS can. Anyway the main point is the 3DS is built to do mainly 1 thing which is gaming while the iphone and ipod touch is a multimedia device which can do A LOT of things plus the constant updates on the App Store even improves and enhance those features. Anyway I'm speaking facts here although I don't believe the iphone or 3DS is worth that kind of money although I will say if they were to both be 300 dollars the 3DS would most definitely be more overpriced then the Ipod touch or iphone.
If only people had controlled their excitement during E32K10 !!! Anyways, we have another chance. If positive reaction towards the 3DS made Nintendo decide its price then maybe negative reaction towards the high price would make Nintendo drop the price. So, if you want the price to drop, you know what to do !!!
I'm usually an everyone's opinion kinda guy but seriously, I speak for everyone when I say I'm not spending 300$ for a handheld, EVER... 300$ at launch for 10 games that may not even be good ( no console ever has good games at launch), you'd prolly get more bang for your buck buying a ps3 or 360 slim, I'd buy a console with like 1000 titles to choose from be4 i fork over a good 300$ for 10... Sorry Nintendo, i had your back since the early n64 days but not this time, all that Wii success got to their brains....
Nintendo has just made the biggest mistake by admitting that the positive reaction helped increase the price point. Now, every fan and critic is going to give luke-warm to unpositive feedback to make sure this never happens again.
I think something was lost in translation. No company in their right mind would admit to that. That being premium pricing because of positive reaction. And if that's the case then remember back in the mid 90's when Nintendo continued to use cartridges and lost the console wars to Sony's disc based system? Well, I don't see the DS losing ground to the PSP any time soon but at $300 Nintendo could be making another big mistake! I don't think I've ever seen any Nintendo console sell for more than $250. Hopefully it will not go the way it did for the PS3 when it first debuted at a high price. I take that last back. Hopefully it will so then they will lower the price quicker.
I hate it when these companies get greedy. Sony president said something similar with the Ps3 and its 599 launch price. They were sorry later. I hope Nintendo doesn't make that mistake but I'm afraid they will.
@mrzero1982pt2 No gamble here. They will sell off their stock to early adopters, by the time they get enough stock for the rest of us, they will drop the price. Personally, I dont believe the US launch will be at 300, i think 250.
Wow. that's way too much for a handheld. it kind of makes you wonder what the price point was before E3. Exactly how much did it get marked up?
in 1989, when the game boy was released, the price was 99 bucks. think about it. for the price of 3 game boys at launch, you can get a 3ds! HA! heck, the VIRTUAL BOY LAUNCHED AT 180! nintendo has officially tried to commit suicide. i hope it is a gamble which pays off, but i will not be one of the folks who buys one. i cant. i am sorry. i mean, this thing is pricier than a wii and a gamecube at launch! these were HOME CONSOLES!
LOOKS GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE GRAPHICS ARE MUCH BETTER, YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE FROM NINTENDO!
@alexLmx6 This is NINTEDO we are talking about. Nintendo has never done something like this before. Nintendo admitted that part of the price is because the 3DS was well received at E3 and that's not excuse. Forget the price, the conversion or whatever. And if you don't want to, then I'll tell you this, 300 USD obviously won't be the price for the 3DS in America, it'll be 250USD but since Nintendo admitted this, then the price CAN be even lower because Nintendo can't make a 3DS using our positive reactions.
Just because 25,000 Yen is $300 doesn't mean it will be $300! Nintendo in the past has done it from thousands to hundreds. For example they did the dsi for 18,000 yen and it was $180. It would make the most amount of sense if it was $250!
I don't get the whining. Apple does this all the time with the ipod and even the ipad. They are over priced. The ipods cost more than this and it has basic enhancements. At least with the 3DS there is actual research that went into it.
299 seem like a bit high. This might hurt nintendo unless they do a price drop when the new psp come out. High price was one of the thing that hurt psp sales when it came out, but who knows what price the new psp going to be at. I see the 3DS selling like crazy when it release, then sales will slow down due to the high price. Then when the new psp come out, I see them doing a price drop to counter it. However with the current market, it going to be hard for Nintendo to screw up and lose the next generation of handheld. So I guess the price not really going to hurt them too much.
If your ok with this price your a fanboy. You'd probubly buy a turd if it had the name Nintendo on it.
$300!!!! I don't care how strong the Nintendo fanbase is, if you pay this for a handheld your dumb. This may not be the actual price, but I'm sure it's gonna be close. Look at the pspgo. Flop
Good in one way. At least now with people complaining about the price being so high i might just be able to get one on launch. Plenty of time to save up its going to be another 5-6 months away.
I mean the Wii was 250 with the game, console, wiimote, etc. The 3DS is something im still very excited about. But honestly this is TWICE the price of the first nintendo ds when it was released :(
so let me get this straight... more folks paid attention to it so that garners a super expensive price? so THAT means if no one even looked at it, the price would be affordable? HA! has he lost his mind? did he not see what happened to the psp when this happened? people LOVED it at E3, and then when the price came out, folks scoffed at the price and didnt buy it! good job nintendo, this will be one which will haunt you for a while.
