Sony Online Entertainment brings beloved orange thing to downloadable store next week.
Sony Online Entertainment isn't exactly synonymous with retro gaming, but the publisher is doing a lot of the heavy lifting in bringing older titles to the PlayStation 3. Last month the company announced that it was bringing six vintage Midway arcade games to the PlayStation Network online store, and the company followed it up this week with word that it was bringing a Gottlieb classic to the PS3 as well.
Next week, Sony Online Entertainment will release Q*Bert for the PlayStation Network's online store. The game will support resolutions up to 720p and incorporate worldwide online leaderboards. The edges of the game's playfield on the PS3 will also be framed by artwork designed to mimic that of the 1982 arcade cabinet, with pictures of the game's characters, including Q*Bert, Ugg, Coily, and Wrong-Way. Q*Bert is set for release February 22 and will carry a price of $4.99.
What are these games? :( Can someone give a real breif explanation of what kind of classics these are?
to: rijnie, you know rijnie the old games are what made this new generation come to what it is. Without a starting point there would be no today's high end games. You need to appreciate what gaming is and where it came from. By the way having these classic games in your new generation system is a CHOICE, you don't have to have it. Classic gaming is a thing of today as much as it was yesterday, my friend actually has most of the actuall arcades in his garage and they are much fun, but of course he has the new wave consoles also. Get a grip on reallity rinjie.
They don't have the big name titles of the late 80's and 90's like the other concoles have. Seems like they're trying to give second tier games. I'm not feeling it. Buy hey at least they are trying.
what thef aer they doing is this next-gen or not? go away with that ugly old **** games. i get myy gameboy pocket if i want to play old games
Well well, not getting this. Not paying money for any retro games on any system. Hard enough trying to convince myself to buy PS2 game now that I have a PS3.
DEMON, I'm not buying a PS3 until they have some more games, either. However, nobody here wants to see fanboys of another console come over to blast the PS3 if they have nothing to say about Q*bert. All three consoles have these options to buy classic games and it all started on the PC first. Q*bert is a great game and I still play it on occasion. It's one of the most entertaining games of the 80's. I don't have a PS3 but hopefully it will appear on the XBL Marketplace (I do have a 360) in the future.
ticalmc2k2 "Somehow I'm sure that some fanboy will point out how much "Phony suxxorz for putting Qbart on teh BS3"..." It's already been doen about 50 times so far. But it's great news when it comes to 360 or Wii. " "BS3" lol that's funny I'm going to have to use that.
totally unfair... not saying Q*Bert needs to in any way be played at 720p resolution, but for Sony to snag such a classic is beyond unfair!! Now I'm kind of salty cause I thought Microsoft had the lock down on all classic for their arcade deal... and one slips between the cracks... what a sham
bghattas...funny that you took time out of your day to post that! haha...j/k Enough with just calling it Fanboyism though. Sony needs to get their priorities straight. Put our games that sell the system! Instead of putting out 25 year old games, how about something new? I'll buy a PS3, when there is more that 2 games to play on the system. But no way in heII am I dropping six hundred dollars on a greatest hits collection of 20+ year old titles.
QBERT!!! When I was a freshman in 1982 at Washington State University, the "cow" college in Pullman, WA on the border just a few miles from Moscow, Idaho ("scow" we called it) (drinking age was 19 back then in Idaho!) me and my frat buddies (DA-T-DAs) used play QBert like mad! I have missed that game so much. Now my PS3 pays off! None of the other consoles have ever given me the chance to play that again. I get to hear that weird squishy crunch when he hopes then that "swee" and "knock" noise when he falls off the optical illusion pyramid. I used to play that "baked." Or "baked again" we'd say. Also, we'd play for hours after pitcher after pitcher was downed. My buddy used to hold the record. Wow! what great memories. Thanks PS3. All you haters can kiss my arse! QBert rocks!
Wow. Instead of people talking about how great Q*Bert is we've got nothing but teenagers who blast Sony yet ignore their Xbox 360s because they're unhappy with their purchase. Not to mention they have horrid grammar, potty mouths and are upset that they are doomed to man the counters at Burger King for life. The Internet is truly lame.
Qbert is like that old TV show Three's Company. I used to play it back in the day but I can't believe that I used to like. Qbert stinks. I am glad it went to the PS3 because they can have that piece of @#$%.
I'm not mad at Sony for releasing Midway games. The Midway name is truly synonymous with some classic titles. But again, Sony misses a great opportunity by
"atrimus: cracks me up how all the naysayers are naysaying how Sony's providing downloadable content for the PS3 the same naysayers so cherish on the 360. give it a rest. no, Q*Bert isn't a reason to own a PS3 (that happens in a couple of days, with Virtua Fighter 5" Of course hardcore gamers would wait for the 360 version of VF5 which is based on the up-to-date Version 3 arcade game and the PS3 (anyone else notice than on a UK keyboard the 3 key is shared with the pound sign?) edition of VF5 is based on the older Version 2 arcade machine.
Q*Bert is my hero, might have to get a ps3 just for that game.............. :P heck with that noise but do like Q*bert
i think sony is doing the right thing, they are bringing us new generation games, and a very good plus of retro, for me retro games are very fun. Sony is getting a realy good library of games. I mean is not a console that is just built around one game, like xbox is. halo
LOl teh BS3 (get it lolz) is got gamez taht dont use teh big COMPUTER!!1 n00bz ZOMG teh XBOX noes how 2 do this rite!!!1 When what you're trying to say is: ZOMG i cant pay teh monies 4 teh sony 1 il get xbox 4 me!!
I don't think people bought the PS3 for these sort of games. What we want to see is a huge back catalogue of PSOne games. Not these poor quality retro titles.
This definitely is the turning point for Sony......this awesome announcement will most definitely make up for their recent losing streak!
Yay, a $600 system that can play 25 year old games...La da freakin Da! God I would love a PS3, IF they'd make games worth owning. Sony needs to remove their heads from their arses, and get down with the NEXT GEN!!!!
Well this is great at least they seem to be getting more with Playstation Network maybe we'll see weekly additions from now on. Oh and to all you damned haters im feeling really amped up from a earlier fight so I wouldn't mind taken some pathetic lives right now..... So who wants to be first.
Awesome! I have at least the Atari 2600 and Dreamcast versions. But, sadly to say... Both PS3s and Wiis have been entirely sold out within miles of here from day one!
The biggest thing that intrigues me about any of these classic games is the global ranking. Otherwise, I'd just buy a compliation, but the ability to see how you score against others around the world is just too intriguing to me. Hope for more classics with online leaderboards and hopefully other competitive twists in the vein of 'achievements'
i missed this game, i say thx for a classic. Hopefully once i pick up a ps3 i will be able to download this, though i only played Q-bert 3, but hey the orginal must be just as good.
"At least we can spell "freaking" right." I did that on purpose idiot. If you ever watched Battlestar Gallactica you'd know what I'm talking about.
Q-Bert, no matter how you update the graphics will always be Q-Bert. It was a lame game 25 years ago, and still is today. I even remember a real horrible cartoon spin-off. Of all the cartoons based on video games from the 80s(and there were quite a few) it's probably the worst, next to that God awful Frogger one. Best was Pole Position. BTW, am I the only one disturbed by all the pay for downloads that have been cropping up lately? Why would anyone in their right mind pay for drm'd non-physical media? That 5 to 10 dollars would be better spend buying an obscure PS2 or Cube game from a pawn shop.
ugh... I couldn't stand QBert in the arcade when I was a kid and then my folks bought it for me on the Colecovision... bad memories...
Wiifanboy_4life: At least we can spell "freaking" right. I do believe the poster you originally quoted was making a BSG reference.
yeah now if they would just drop the price more people could buy this overpriced piece of crap don't get me wrong i did love the ps2
