PSP Go launching in black and white

E3 2009: Sony VP of marketing Peter Dille confirms redesigned handheld will ship in two colors on October 1; additional hues possible postrelease.

LOS ANGELES--Sony Computer Entertainment had a hard time keeping the PSP Go under wraps leading up to the handheld's reveal during the publisher's 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference. Just a few days before Sony was to descend on the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Sony's director of hardware marketing, John Koller, appeared in a leaked video of the PlayStation-focused video magazine Qore, spilling nearly all of the details on the device.

Nearly, but not quite all. Following the PSP Go's official reveal on Tuesday, Sony's senior VP of marketing and PlayStation Network, Peter Dille, spoke with GameSpot, confirming that the fourth iteration of Sony's handheld will launch in two colors: white and black.

"It will have both white and black at launch, and we're looking at bringing additional colors into the marketplace postlaunch," Dille said in a video interview, holding up the alabaster device.

The PSP Go is expected to launch on October 1, alongside the long-awaited Gran Turismo PSP. It is 50 percent smaller and 40 percent lighter than the PSP-3000, with integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support. The device lacks a UMD drive, though gamers will be able to download games directly through the PlayStation Store and store them on the 16GB of onboard flash memory. It will retail for $249.99.

    aesthetically the psp go looks sweet..... but with no umd drive and a high price release it doesnt seem worth it for the time being....

    I bet most or all of the people on here complaining about how greedy Sony is, continuously releasing different versions of the PSP, are the same people who run out and buy every new version of the iPod and iPhone. If you aren't interested in buying this product, why are you at this particular web page in the first place? Don't buy it. Go play Nintendogs or some other title starring Mario or Samus on your DS's and leave the PSP fans alone. Everything Sony makes is overpriced, why should this be any different? You are either willing to pay to play, or you aren't.

    The large Flash Mem. will help me out alot not to mention you can add a mem. card also its even better then i thought lol.

    I still cant believe that its only going to be $250... Im getting it when it comes out for sure.

    Yeah you can buy the dissidia bundle for $199.99 it comes with a 2gig memory card and by the time you fill the 2 gig memory card a 16gig memory card might be announced.

    I'd rather go with PSP3000 too, bigger screen, nicer looking handheld. Thumbstick is badly placed though i keep getting pins and needles in my hand

    @ yixingtpot. That is actually a very good explination of the psp go price, however memory can be found ungodly cheap at this point in time, with me being able to find a 250 gig hard-drive for a computer for about $80 so your pricing is just a bit off. Psp go is over-priced by $50 and thats the bottom line.

    simple, 16GB internal flash memory about $80 or more, the remaining price of $150 or so is for the actual hardware besides the memory. So it's about the same price as the 3000 series minus the large flash memory.

    i want a white one, and PSP RE to go thanks.

    Please. "Greed", "sleazy", come on guys. This is simple economics, it's simple offer-and-demand. It really doesn't matter if it costs less or more to manufacture. What matters is that people are willing to pay MORE for a device that is SMALLER, and more convenient for them. It's about value to the consumer. Not about manufacturing costs. Why am I even arguing here in fact, clearly most of you know next to zip about neither basic economics nor how the game and electronics industries even work, internally!

    You said it, one business annalist said it cost Sony less to make a PSP with 16gigs flash memory then to make a PSP with a UMD drive so why charge $80.00 extra for the PSP Go. He also said that Sony was probably trying to get as many people to pay as much for the PSP Go possible so they can drop it to a reasonable price later. I normally defend game companies trying to make a profit but this is kinda sleezy.

    I don't think the PSP Go is any less of a PSP than the 3000. The screen is the same size, it has 16gigs of internal memory (probably not enough), and you can play the same great games as the 3000. The only real difference is that everything is digital. I don't really think that Sony is expecting many 3000 owners to switch to the Go. They're trying to entice new consumers by offering something that has everything in one small package... same thing Apple did with the iPod, and iPhone. Since many people are going the route of digital download over tangible products, this is a smart move.

    Been waiting for details of this "new" psp for ages and after E3 I decided to buy a psp-3000 instead. I can deal with the small screen, I can deal with the lack of UMB... but I am not paying £230 for a handheld device when I can get a PSP-3000 for £130 with 2 good games. The system offers less in many respects, other than a more compact design... and I am not willing to pay £100 more for less... especially when I already have an 8gig mem stick for my 3000. PLus I plan on enjoying all the ultra cheap UMD games in shops..

    $250 is way to much to ask for this especially considering they removed a lot of parts to make it smaller and lighter. You're telling me it cost them the same amount of money to manufacture this model as it did the original even though they left out a lot of parts? C'mon. Gotta love greed.

    I'd buy a PSP again just so I can play FF7 on it. And if they can manage to build up the PS1 collection on the PSN, then Sony's got my vote.

    The GO looks cool, and I already use the Wi-Fi on me trusty 2000 silver; and what exactly happens to all the UMDs I have? No UMD means no go for me. I'll prolly buy a 3000.

    Been wanting to get a PSP but was reluctant because I didn't like the umd format...now with the PSP Go coming out near my birthday I can ask the wife for an awesome present

    Please not that Sony has said the PSP Go will not replace UMD's or the PSP 3000 as I recall the PSP 3000 has two upcoming bundles that will be released.

    Will you be able to sell your UMDs and get a code to download the games and put them on the PSP Go, and will it accept Memory Stick Pro DUO, and can save game info on a separate Hard drive (say put them in my PS3 or Computer), if so I would like to have one of these.

    ya dude i really hope they make a way for us to convert our old UMD games to a downloadable format to place on our Go's cuz i am getting the new PSP Go but i still would like to have the ability to play all my old games on it.

    Oooo....white PSP *drool....I really do hope that Sony comes up w/ a system that enables PSP owners to trade in their retail UMD's for downloadabe points to download their already bought games games online w/o any extra cost

    I still has a slot for your memory cards... so just take your card OUT of your old PSP and put it IN your new one.

    Hello. Single most asked for feature is a 2nd joystick...where is that?!?!?! And how about those who have a PSP already and have been playing there UMD discs forever? I want to keep my saved progress!
    Ugh I can't believe that they gave the PSP sort of an overhall and they still didn't add a second joystick!!! What are they idiots? Everybody would be flocking to stores to get their own!

    I must say, owning a PS3, PSP original and a 3000, im going to be trading in my 3000 and geting this, i love the love of it, its simple, small, lite and fits in well with my like of downloading games. Dont get me wrong its expensive but it really suits me, and if i feel like buying a UMD i have my original to play them.

    I like where the PSP is going, i say well done Sony!! Plus they wil have expand the PS Store which is always good!

    $250? That's pretty ridiculous for an update, especially for a system that only has a few good games. I would think Sony would have learned with the PS3 that people won't pay high prices when they can get great experiences from other cheaper devices.

    I was waiting for E3 to see if there would be a new PSP out, because I've been thinking about getting one. I was hoping the PSP Go would be the same price, if not cheaper, than the PSP3000. This is somewhat upsetting. I mean, $250 would be the price I'd expect for a completely new PSP, not for a revision.

    @Merex760; are you smoking crack? Yeah, you buy this, then see how long it takes to fill up 16gb and then decide if your purchase was worth it when you start shelling out for multiple memory cards.

    I know i will get hands down but I'm not paying 250.00 for a system with very little GOOD games u can get a xbox 360 with it,200.00 I'm in hell a IPOD touch gives you the same thing and you can buy them hot for 150.00 bring on at least 25 good games and I'm in!
