Sources say Sony's new console may allow users to compete against others using different hardware; platform to feature Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube integration.
With just a day to go before Sony's 2013 PlayStation Meeting in New York City, The Wall Street Journal reports that the PlayStation 4 may allow users to play against other gamers on different hardware, including smartphones and other portable devices.
Cross-platform play is not a new idea for Sony. Wipeout 2048 for PlayStation Vita allows gamers to compete in online races against Wipeout HD players on PlayStation 3. Other titles, like MLB 12: The Show, Mod Nation Racers: Road Trip, and Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, also features cross-platform features for PS Vita and PS3.
Citing unnamed sources reportedly familiar with Sony's plans, the WSJ also reports that the PS4 will let players share achievements through social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. In addition, gamers will be able to share gameplay footage through YouTube directly through the console, the sources said.
The newspaper's sources also said Sony is indeed planning a PS4 controller with a touch pad, lending credence to last week's leaked images, which showed a touchpad on its face.

I do not mind a system with extra bonuses. It will keep it interesting whenever I get bored of just gaming.
O and as for the comments about prices for the PS4 430 usd is a good price compared to what the PS3 was when it dropped. I think we might be asking alot to drop it to 300 usd... and I do not expect that to happen. After all they are a company trying to make money... lets not forget that!
If Sony gives us dedicated servers for our games... say call of duty 4 and other titles alike... I'm all for paying 50 usd for online play! PSN though its free lacked in this area and made game play at times rather frustrating. I was reading a comment about the new controller on another website.... some one already dislikes it..... I'm thinking to myself wow no matter what a company does they (people) will never be happy. I should say I converted from XBOX!!!
Here's my thoughts on all this..
Sony is going to have two bands of PSN access, much like they've already got established at the moment. The free PSN will now include cross-game chat (as requested by gamers for a good long while), if you choose to pay for PS+ however this will then include video chat using the eye-toy. Obviously paying for PSN will bring a whole other load of bonuses such as the free games now, but I can't help feel they'll make it even more worthwhile for the PS4.
I'd also expect the eye-toy to be a rather integral part of some gaming, but with the option to turn it off. Think the motion-controls for Killzone or Warhawk.
The sooner this conference is upon us and we have answers the better :P
I sincerely hope the eye to does not need to be turned on and is purely optional, I don't need a motion controller to be integrated into my gaming, for it breaks the immersion.

I hate the look of those controllers. Look too much like the original. Sony can do better then that. I have no problem with the multi-device cross play as long as it works perfectly well. How would we know if we're playing against someone using a PSVita?
5 Like I blame Nintendo for the demise of gaming. Their stupid Wii console sold to millions of casuals and now that's all Sony and Microsoft are focused on as well. What they don't seem to get through their thick heads is that casuals don't keep buying consoles. They're happy enough with their $200 tablet now.
This focus on casual gimmicks is ruining gaming. Now hardware makers are focusing on stupid add-ons instead of powerful machines. Sony & Microsoft better wake up and realize that the people that buy their consoles don't want the soft bullshit that Nintendo peddles. That's why we buy their shit in the first place!

2 Like Honestly out of all the rumors that have come out, there hasn't been a single one that reveals anything special. After the Wii U and all the tablet craze, touch enabled controllers come as no surprise. And all the other tidbits mean nothing. Even the rumored price around 400-450 is no surprise. You have to think Sony has something innovative in mind that would make people want to upgrade or switch over from their existing Ps3's and Xbox's. Either way tomorrow we will know the truth.
So this story has no connection with the story of bunige's game destiny going to ps4 xbox 720, and the vidoc showing app cross gaming on the apple iphone????????
1 Like Not sure why this is such a big deal, cross-platform gaming has been going on for many years now. Even Xbox 360 has some cross-platform games, I'm sure PS3 does as well.
I know Xbox 360 also has a singleplayer cross-platform game as well, the game called Skulls of the Shogun can be played on your Xbox 360, then you can also play it on your Windows Smartphone or Windows 8 pc/tablet and pick up right where you left off, it's all connected.
@Landsharkk Theyre saying you'll be able to play against other ppl cross platform, if im playing ps all starz on the vita online I can go against someone who's playing on their ps3s
@BX_BORN @Landsharkk Yeah I know, but that is already possible with several games that exist on the Xbox 360 (that I know for sure) and I'm guessing also for the PS3.
So, cross-platform game is not new, it's been around for years on current gen consoles.
3 Like While I do usually prefer a dedictated device for many things electronic; stand alone digital camera, video camera, etc. I break with the crowd that wants a console just for gaming. The best thing about the PS3 is that I don't have to buy a separate blu-ray player. If my wife wants to check out something on the net, she can do that. If I want to watch a movie thru Netflix or Vudu, etc. we can do that and the best part is I can do that all on one large 52" screen. God bless America! (and fellow PS3 users like me)

1 Like @FAIL_TR0LL Uh...no. If you recall, within the past year or so Gamespot had an article that said, when answering a poll among PS3 users, what is the number one reason for buying a PS3. The answer? Watching movies on blu-ray. Perhaps if you're a pimple faced 15 year old all you want to do is sit in your bedroom and play games. However, the average age of the gamer nowadays is 32 and while we still love games we also love being able to use our consoles for more than just shooting online strangers.
I guess people in here are a bit more respectful, but just about every xbox-centric article in which Microsoft mentions expanding the entertainment options on the 360, everyone is up in arms saying stupid crap like "I bought this console to play GAMES!"
Consoles are not an issue to buy but it's their freaking games which cost a hell of a lot. Heck the consoles are cheaper with better graphics vs a pre-built desktop or laptop...
So that is an alternative if you don't want to spend $1000+ for a gaming machine. For games you pretty much will spend about the same for cross platforms.
And about this news. Good thing I still have my xperia play phone.. Lets see how PS4 will work it's magic on my phone.

Add to that on average console owners pay £10-£15 more for their games, over the life time of a console that adds up. So this silly argument that PC gaming is this unobtainable cost attached to it is a myth as pointed out by demonkingx5, one of many in the PC vs Console debate

3 Like Sony better not make over ambitious statements yet again, just like the Vita and ps3 to the psp and the ps2. i like thier ideas but i think its to much for them sometimes.
3 Like This "cross-platform play with smartphones" and other devices is probably the Gaikai streaming games (not PS4 ones) to several devices: PS4, Vita, tablets, smartphone and others.
