We can only guess that Sony is attempting to self destruct the PS3. I turned on my PS3 tonight "4/19/08" and I was FORCED to download and install 3, count 'em 3 separate updates just to play Warhawk. This took over an hour and is using untold space on my hard drive so I can, what was it again, oh yes, play neato looking blow-ray movies at nifty even higher (Yes, now I can see more sweat beads!) resolution. Yes, once again Sony is simply a company that believes that constantly updating your GAME MACHINE with pointless updates is more fun then playing Unreal or COD 4. You know, when you turn on an old Sega Genesis or N64, does everybody know what happens? Yes, a totally amazing thing happens. YOU PLAY A GAME! Like right away too. A PS3 is a gaming system, it is not Windows Vista. It is not a computer, it is not a blew-ray it is a machine specifically designed to PLAY GAMES! Yes indeed, I blew-ray $499.00 on a update machine. That is awesome. Now I have to go out and buy a game machine cause I apparently no longer have one. And to top all this off, here is a direct quote from Sony Computer Entertainment executive Ray Maguire: "...ten years from now the ratio of games sales will have gone from 90 per cent in-store to 90 per cent online." Yes, Sony's brilliant marketing strategies will certainly point game developers in the direction of smaller sized, less complicated, less graphic games. Apparently the morons at Sony all have zillions of dollars and super fast internet hookups, not to mention extra super big hard drives on their Sony PS3s so they can download a 55 gig game like "Resistance: Fall Of Man" in 20 seconds onto their amazing PS3s. Not too mention, future games on the PS3 will be using 100GB and 200GB technology with 4 or 8 blow-ray layers for even bigger games. So I can only guess that we will all be looking forward to downloading amazing games like a remake of "Lolo 3" or "Sonic Spinball" because, (pay attention Sony dorks) it may be the only game that can A: Be downloaded in less then a week, and B: Will fit on an 80gig hard drive. Hey, maybe I can hook up like 8 USB drives to my GAME MACHINE in my living room so I can make life easy for multi-billion dollar companies who release they systems uncomplete with big plans to waste everybody's GAME TIME with their fixes disguised as "free updates".
PS3 Store update wired for sound
Latest firmware adds DTS-HD Audio features in addition to a redesigned PlayStation Store. Sony Japan hints D-Day will be April 15.
Next week's planned update to the PlayStation 3 will bring with it not only the revamped PlayStation Store, but also DTS-HD High Resolution Audio and DTS-HD Master Audio for Blu-ray movies.
The PlayStation Store has not received any new content or updates since work was announced to be underway on a redesign to overhaul the navigation and interface.
After the revamped Store front goes live, users logging on will be prompted to download the firmware 2.30 update so that they can access the new service. An exact date has yet to be confirmed by either Sony Europe or Sony America, but according to a statement from Sony Japan, it's all going down on April 15.
Sony America has announced today that the next firmware update will also add high-definition audio features for Blu-ray movies. DTS stands for Digital Theater System and is a multichannel, digital surround-sound format. DTS-HD Master Audio is a lossless codec that delivers sound to movie fans at 24.5 megabits per second, a rate that Sony asserts is "significantly higher than standard DVDs."
DTS-HD High Resolution Audio is an optional surround-sound format for Blu-ray, and when loaded will stream explosions, speech, and everything else at a constant bit rate of 6.0 Mbps. It is capable of up to 7.1 audio channels at 96k sampling frequency/24-bit depth resolution.
Over 100 Blu-ray movies, including some concert videos, currently support DTS-HD Master Audio. These include Night at the Museum, Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, and I, Robot.
