PS3 sales up amid overall losses for Sony

While I'm not going to make the cow remark"teh PS3 outselling teh 360one11!11" I'd say sales would most likely be at 50/50 between the 360 and PS3 before the next gen hardware ships out.

when they say they lost money, they mean they just didnt make the expected profit amount they wanted to or did last quarter. im not sure if im explaining that right, but there talking in profit numbers. heck there even still selling 300 thousand ps2s, a system that i dont even personally know anyone who plays it anymore that is like 10 years old. just thik of how much profit they made on ps2 alone let alone ps3! sheesh!

lets clear something up, this is all profit, so when they say there losing money, there not really losing anything at all, not a f-ing penny. this goes for all articles you read like this, what it means is they didnt make as much profit as last quarters profit. so they still made millions upon millions of dollars, they just didnt make as many millions as last time. they no way what so ever lost any money at all. if you sold 4 million ps3s at 250$ thats 100 million dollars, i really dont feel sorry that they didnt make 250 million this quarter or whatever they aimed for. so now that they didnt make the greedy amount they made some supervisor is getting yelled at so he comes up with a solution to cut all the peoples game sharing down from 5 to 2 ps3s to make some idiot happy again so he can make a trillion dollars this year. meanwhile us consumers who only make less then 100k our entire life span we get the bone by losing our games we paid for if we own more then 2 ps3s

dont worry sony. just release god of war 4 and all your software issues will be fine :)

This is called Karma removing the Other OS feature an advertised feature is what caused this. You don't advertise features and then remove them at your own whim. Fanboys can kiss my face get over yourself. Sony has very little reputable innovations to the gaming system apart from the dual stick layout and the use of optical drives. And y'all know it, Bluray has barely done anything other than let Rage be on one disc instead of 3. I'd rather have 3 discs and save myself a ton of money. Sorry!

Won't be long before PS3 passes the 360 in worldwide sales. I'd say sometime next year.

I have awesome gaming PC, PS3 and 360. Some games are better in PC, specially RTS and Battlefield series in particular. Some games are better on the PS3, I personally enjoy Call of Duty series, Uncharted Series, Demon's Souls, Socom, Resistance, and the list goes on and on. But 360? Has nothing good, crapiest system ever. Sold mine a week ago for a good price. I feel bad for scamming my roommate :(

I enjoy most of Sony products, which are usually very dependable, and long lasting. I hope they get their consumer products division back on track. I was thinking of purchasing a 46in Sony Bravia LED, but if I bring one home my wife will destroy me,seeing as how we have 5 flat panels in the house currently. Either way, Sony is a great company who makes great products. Except maybe their car audio..

Notice how GameSpot doesn't say anything about the home entertainment, film and television production segments of their business. In case anyone hasn't noticed (and why would "gamers" notice), the Euro is in the tank. Everyone is waiting on Greece to see what happens. So naturally a weak Euro is going to affect their profits.

LOL. I'm amused 10 people agreed with me. :D pro-Nintendo-Sony/anti-Microsoft fanboys unite 8) I love Sony and Nintendo. Both will easily boune back, and bet that I'll be first in line supporting Nintendo's Wii U and inevitable 3DS revision, and I will be reserving the first edition Vita.

My old PS2 died then i bought a new PS2. Still have a plenty of good games to play while i play my PS3 and PSP :) Long life to PS2 hehe!

OMG SONY IS GOING TO BE ONLY 3° PARTY DEVELOPER SONY ISS DOOOOMED!!!!!! (sarcasm) I am not surpraised at all. The exchange rate, drop in the price of the stocks (Sony and Nintendo losed 50% this year) and lower sales for hardware (including TVs) and/or software is hurting Sony, Nintendo and Sega. They will be fine in the long run i hope.

For the record I got a new PS3 because I needed a 3D player for my 51" 3D Plasma TV and I did not want to get a stand alone player that only offered me and my son being able to watch 3D movies. Point is Sony that 3D got me to get your system so maybe you should be trying to get stores to package the Sony Playstation 3 system with more and more tvs. I also think for the people who don't have a 3D TV and are not doing so cuz you hear it is a FAD well judge it for yourself instead of listening to idiots saying this. 3D movies and 3D gaming has added a whole new experience to entertainment in my home. It has been lots of fun.

Sony has erred in trying to push expensive new (and gimmicky?) tech during a global economic downturn. Sony says "3D" in its statements more than Nintendo does. Microsoft got hammered for a Kinect-heavy E3, but Sony spent more time the last 2 E3's talking Move and 3D (to sell their TVs and cameras) than MS did talking about Kinect. Sony makes overpriced electronics and in a downturn, consumers are deciding that the Sony name isn't worth the extra hundreds of dollars. So instead of trying to work withing the current economy, they are sticking with their push towards more expensive tech.

@SolidTy: You act like I was tryin' to call you out dude... I was only asking a question because I wasn't sure, you're brow-beating me man, lol. Talking about you have proven yourself this was by no means an interrogation. Usually saying the words M$ is sort of throwing a jab at your fellow 360 owner. I would try to avoid it when possible, heard it means all kinds of slander. Like all MS cares about is moolah, or someone is trying to say Micro****, often used trying to imply MS is the only money grubbing company out there. Hence why people replace the dollar sign with the "S". I mainly see Sony fanboys saying that word.

Pretty good sales considering that one incident earlier this year.

It's still good to see PS2 doing well even 11 years later, it will always be considered one of the greatest consoles of all time.

I am glad they reduced the price,but I will be happier if they would drop it to 199.I just want a PS3 for the upcoming game Journey.

But am too late since I typed it too slow. It's true. The Japanese do tend to only update four times a year, although Sony's last report was like 50-51, the 50 comes from April as seen in my previous post (edit) that means they must have moved a considerable amount of PS3 units since then. I imagine that post was a lot of work considering the paragraphs got jumbled, smushed together... Truly Gamespot is the worst when it comes to manual indent. @SolidTy: X360 two million behind PS3? Where are you pulling your estimates from? Last I saw Microsoft confirmed they were 55 million consoles WW compared to Sony's 50 million units sold. Granted that was a while ago, none the less it's what people go by. EDIT: Now it's clear I didn't see MS latest earnings report before. I saw their recent one that said MS made 2.3M while Sony got 3.7 this year. Even though I am a PC gamer I always buy a game for the ps3 if I can't get in on PC, and of coarse there is the sony exclusives as well lol.

Ofcorse PS3 sales are up. It's the same thing I did with PS2. Once I played that shyt out of, and made love to my Xbox and GameCube, it's like, ariiight, lets see what this other guys got to offer. lol

PS3 will forever be the bad egg of Sony. Unfortunately people will look back and say they (Sony) really didn't get it right with this system. So powerful & expensive (at first), yet nowhere near outclassing the Xbox...but mark these words, the PS4 will OWN the competition. Just like PS1 and PS2 it might even turn another hardware manufacturer strictly to software, first Sega, next Nintendo. But really, who wouldn't want to see Link on the PS4 or Xbox whatever...really?

I actually bought the Infamous 2 pack. My 60 gig died for the third time, this time the blu-ray drive went and so I decided to just get the new model. It sure feels cheap as hell and with they did an Infamous 2 design theme like the 360 does for it's gaming bundles. Hopefully this one won't break on me. But Infamous 2, to me, is by far the best PS3 game.

It looks like there won't be a Playstation 4.

I bought my PS3 over 4 years ago. It still sits in the box because I lost interest in it on the ride home.

@9Dguy well you are one lucky son of a gun. I wish i had the BC one. i had the stupid 40gig and now that i got the slim its a 250gig. I still missthe way the Fats looked. i dont like the way the slims look but hey... as long as it plays games and doesnt die on me.

Here is an unknown anomolly illustrating confusing. I thought Sony always did well in Europe and the Americas. Kind of odd. $443 million across the board seems a pretty is a hefty loss.

Even if Sony's gaming department is doing fine (I'm not even sure to say that because of how amazing Sony did with their PS1 and PS2 glory days) but its just about every other department in Products & Services division: tvs, cameras, computers, sound systems etc is hemorrhaging money for varies reasons not just yen to dollar conversion lost and have been for several years now. This is a huge failing for Sony since they haven't change their vision for these markets nor have any plan to change in the future. Sony needs to either drastically change their angle in some markets and completely cut other markets because the US and European economy isn't going to get any better any time soon.

they are losing money because people who have the old ps3 the fat model keep getting the YLOD and they either do one of 2 things.... say FU sony or buy a xbox. I had this happen to me 5 times. i had theYLOD on 5 different ps3's, if you call that a coincidence then you just dont have a brain. I ended up fixing my ps3 fat myself and traded it in at gamestop for a slim. hahaha. its not that hard to fix yourself. maybe sony should fix its problematic consoles and then they will understand why they are losing money.

@awheaten: That maybe true about their newer televisions... but nothing beats a Sony 32'-inch tube television with S-Video, VGA, AWA Component Video. Those from what I here emulate scanlines on par with Arcade PCB monitors. Ain't nothing like an old fashion television to play Virtua Cop & Time Crisis on.

How does Sony do all these things to compete with Microsoft yet they continually lose money? Is it because the PS3 HARDWARE ITSELF became profitable until the price cut, where Sony suffered losses again? I swear they need to reevaluate their business strategy. Well, it can't be any worse than Nintendo. Last I saw they reported close to a 1 billion dollar loss...

Hey Sony's big problem is this: you can get a Samsung TV that is the same size; same picture for about a thousand dollars less. Their price inflation is tremendous. And like the author said, it may be because of the Yen. I'm calling BS on that though, they just need to find a way to get those prices lower. Look at everything Sony sells. Then look at their competitors. They need to find a way to bring down their prices. Don't get me wrong, I'm PlayStation to the end. But their products are crazy expensive.

definitely no surprise in light of all Sony went through this past 12 months... things will definitely look up for them though. The fact that they continue to offer the best exclusives across the current platforms means my PS3 is easily still my favourite this gen. I do play on my 360, but rarely these days.... and PS2 still giving it the rizz... nice. It's amazing how many they still sell - not just the overseas markets mentioned, but also still some in Japanese, European and US territory. For instance, I bought one inadvertently recently... I needed a small new LCD TV, and saw for the same money as others a Sony one which had a PS2 built into it's stand. It was a no brainer, of course I bought it! And that's one more PS2 they sold in the UK, even now in 2011. What an amazing console it was, and still is.

Watching the Gamespot userbase try to talk about macroeconomics is adorable.
