PS3 Rock Band 2 due Oct. 19, PS2/Wii in December

MTV Games and Harmonix's rhythm game debuts on Sony's platform on Sunday with $190 bundle, $60 stand-alone; Wii game to get previously released DLC.

Microsoft's third-party strategy in staying competitive in the console race has been clear: Identify the highest-profile games and find some way for them to be better on the Xbox 360. For MTV Games and Harmonix's hit rhythm game Rock Band 2, the publisher was able to finagle a "first on 360" deal, whereby the game would see a timed exclusivity window making it available for purchase only on Microsoft's console.

That period is now rapidly drawing to a close. Confirming retailers' expectations, MTV Games said today that Rock Band 2 will be available for the PlayStation 3 beginning October 19, with the Wii and PlayStation 2 releases following in December.

Beginning Sunday, gamers can pick up the Xbox 360 and PS3 stand-alone software for $59.99. The game will also be available on both consoles as part of a $189.99 special-edition bundle that includes the newly designed drum set, guitar, and mic. MTV Games will also be offering an $89.99 stand-alone drum kit and $69.99 solo guitar package for the PS3 and PlayStation 2.

MTV Games also revealed more details on the Wii version of Rock Band 2. Along with the PS2 edition, the Wii game will retail for $49.99, with a special-edition bundle and stand-alone instruments following the same pricing outlined above. The game will include the same 84 tracks included in other versions of the game, and Wii owners will also qualify for MTV's previously promised bonus song downloads, for which registration is currently available.

The introduction of Rock Band 2 for the Wii will also rectify one of the central detriments of its predecessor, released in June. MTV Games said today that Wii renditions of previously released downloadable content will be rolled out each week "until the entire back catalogue is available."

So on the 19th we'll get the PS3 game, instruments, and bundle along with the 360 bundle. Good news for Rock Band fans. Though in the end I'm probably going to pick up the GH:WT bundle sometime early next year, and not the RB2 one. I just feel that from the looks of things it's gonna turn out to be the the superior game with more content, features, and much better instruments. We'll see how it turns out though.

@wampaking, don't bash what you didn't buy. You want difficult, notes that don't exist, then have your Guitar Hero WT. It's a copy and no innovation and your precious Nevahsoft is gonna run it into the ground just like they did with the Tony Hawk series. When Harmonix is ready, they will release a real music game again and Nevahsoft will have to play catch up once more.

Thanks for this and GH Controller compatibility on Wii, but I'm sold on GH:WT Wii (but I'll buy the disc if I have any cash leftover).

Interestingly, the press release quoted on IGN mentions that there are "over 100 songs on Rock Band 2 for Wii, with 30 downloadable tracks available at launch." It makes it sound like the 20 extra tracks are included on disc.

@iBuSHiDo Yeah I know what you mean. Like I posted before, Gamespot's coverage of RB2 for the Wii is lacking to say the least. IGN's covearge is 100X better. But to answer your question is no, currently RB2's and GHWT instriments are not cross compatible.

OK. So the Wii version will have downloadable content. Cool. We knew this ...What about custom characters? I haven't heard anything about that. I want the full game, not a game with a limb chopped off.

I'm still confused and I can't seem to find the info. Does anyone know if the Guitar, Drums, and Mic for the Wii version of Rockband 2 will also be compatible for GH World Tour?

PS3 = Second priority gamers system. XBOX360 = first and foremost the platform for games. I got this game back in september. LOL this is OLD news.

TheWampaKing Posted Oct 16, 2008 5:19 pm PT ROCK BAND IS A CRUD CAKE!!!! Case closed! (slams a random suitcase) Yeah, a crudcake, from the people who designed the original Guitar Hero, your so smart, stop bashing Rock Band it goes all year round instead of releasing discs to take your money every three months like Activision wants to, you can select the songs you want to play instead of pay for all of them. kenakuma Posted Oct 16, 2008 5:02 pm PT WII needs a HDD for sure now..... Not happening, you will however, be able to download songs to SD cards with the next update. You will also be able to copy your Virtual Console games to an SD card and play them from there also. Finally is all I have to say even though I gave up on the Wii about a year ago.

All you people waiting til December, buy a true videogame system instead of your Wii and you can play good games all year around instead of dancing round like clowns.

@Thizzle LOL, at this rate you couldn't be more right! @elvato nice james avatar, I'm waiting for GH:metallica edition instead of GHWT and RB2, and I'm only getting it if it supports drumms since I can already play pretty much all of Metallicas stuff on real guitar!

$190, thats a lot, luckily for me though my sister works at FYE and gets a 30% discount, and she owes me $50. Which means that after i get it i can go out and buy a PS Network gift card.

That was the fastest timed-exclusive lapse i have ever seen.

Shame on you Gamespot. I swear your coverage as for as the Wii goes is really slipping. So for all of you that are asking about the question of DC for the Wii version of RB2 the answer is yes there will be downloadable content same as the PS3 and 360 verisons. Infact except for a few minor items, the Wii version will be exactly like the other versions of Rock Band 2.

I'm not paying $189 for this game. Are they crazy? Microsoft was smart to get some timed exclusive rights for this game, as it sold like crazy on the XBox 360. Still, I didn't think the PS3 version was suppose to be released until Novemeber. The time exclusive was for only 30 days, which I don't think was long enough. M$ may have gotten a raw deal on that exchange with MTV Games.

I bought the 360 version of the first one, but my brother and supervisor want me to buy the PS3 version really bad so they can play with me online. My supervisor even offered to pay for all the DLC I payed for the first one as incentive for having to switch versions (he got stuck buying the first one on the PS3 because there were no 360 versions available). I'll pay on either system though; beats beer pong at most parties any day.
