Following console hack, Activision studio says patches won't resolve security exploits to Call of Duty 4, sequel without Sony solution; Black Ops unaffected.
Earlier this month, a band of hackers claimed to have broken down the PlayStation 3's front door, leaving the system open and vulnerable. Sony responded with a lawsuit against the group, and then the band of binary busters fired back its own statement. Now, it appears Infinity Ward's popular Modern Warfare series is suffering from rampant hacking as a result of the breach.
Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling recently created a thread on the official Infinity Ward forums speaking to the issue.
"Sony has recently acknowledged a breach in security on the PS3, which resulted in games to become exposed to exploits and hacks," Bowling wrote. "Modern Warfare 2 is no exception to this security exploit and we understand that some of you have experienced problems with stats and other issues associated with this."
Further, Bowling dove into the specifics of the matter, saying that patches to the game will not resolve the issues currently plaguing the shooter.
"Games rely on the security of the encryption on the platforms they're played on; therefore, updates to the game through patches will not resolve this problem completely, unless the security exploit itself is resolved on the platform," he said. "However, that doesn't mean we're not going to look into every option available to us. Regretfully, Call of Duty games are receiving the bulk of the hacker's attention, due to its high player counts and popularity. However, the number of legitimate players severely outweighs the bad apples."
Additionally, Bowling said a security issue like this is unlikely to happen in the future, as "we plan to adjust our approach to not rely solely on platform security and reduce the ability for this to happen in our games, as has already been displayed by the work Treyarch has done on Call of Duty: Black Ops to prevent similar measures."
one thing they could do is to add bots for offline play, i got this game about a mount ago and hackers have messed up my stats after only about 2 hours play, I heard one of them say some thing about 'god mode' and later about 'being bored.' I did not by the game to try to play with hackers. IW should add bots, they should port bots over from black ops, if they do i might buy the add on packs, if they do not i will sell the game.
Shani_boy101 I agree with you in the fact that they do need to incorporate a "report abuse" option in thier software but I dissagree in talking crap about activision just wanting to take your money and not giving you support. Just remember that your plaing online for free. No subscription charges per month to play online (unlike DC universe). Now free online game playing, that is what I consider supporting thier base. Now if we can just get better servers for COD and Killzone life will be perfect.
@mardinn: Sony didn't take away the "other OS" option, they removed it in an optional patch. What they took away was your ability to both have the other OS option, AND access the Playstation Network. You have no right to access the Playstation Network, it is provided at Sony's discretion, so if you wanted to keep your other OS functionality, you could have done so. Regardless, even if Sony did somehow force people to give up an option they paid for (which they didn't), the proper way to fight it is with a lawsuit, not by breaking federal law to work around their security tech. Hackers love to rationalize their BS, but their logic sucks.
You know, this argument is pretty horrible when their PC servers are flooded with hackers. Not fixable by a patch you say? More like, haven't even tried or considered.
Typical Activision. They're happy to take your money, but when they need to support the user base they make excuses. This stuff would never happen if there were dedicated servers owned/monitored by the devs and there was PunkBuster-like software for consoles.
lol the xbox version of MW2 is being hacked all the time, i hate it im genuinely 10th prestige but i have been asked countless times to hack for people its really annoying (because so many ppl have hacked to 10th then ppl think anyone that is 10th must be a hacker)
@mardinn i know what your saying but the massive by-product of what hes done is having absolutely destroyed the PS3's security. Sony were in a lose lose situation if they kept the other os function it was getting hacked that week, if they removed it it would take a little longer. The point here is Hackers have created this whole situation, Sony were perfectly happy to have the other os function, but oh no. Some geeky little hacker had to ruin it for everyone. So talking from the standpoint of sense and reason and indeed reality there is no justification for what GEOHOT has done.
Alright then. If you can't stop the hacking, then oh well. You tried. Now try to help the balancing in your newer "game" infinty ward...
@Bufta Listen I could care less about the other hackers, but George Hotz just wanted to have full access to the Linux, as in having full access to the graphics card and ram and other whatnot. So he went a bit deeper, and then Sony removed the support. Read now carefully and comprehend. You buy a thing which is advertised that you could do this and that, and one day they remove that support. What would you do? Go back to the shop and return it right? But if you really would like to have it and You know that you could bring back you would do play around until you got what you wanted? I know I would but I lack the skill to do that.
@PixelAddict ...Well yes, but the point is that Sony has done surprisingly well in staving off this sort of thing.
@finaleve Now that all three systems are successful, there are games aplenty on each system. This means a guy needs a garbage detector anymore to sift through the rubble. I remember the last year I played my PS2... garbage, garbage everywhere. It's the price we pay for success in our hobby. :)
@parrot_of_adun You just described why Symantec exists. There's always a need for a better mousetrap. Yes, in my metaphor the hackers are rodents.
@tachsniper In so many ways you are right, but the issue of hacking is that it involves breaking into a console to enable/change features within coding. Hacking is looked down upon from the industry because it changes what they set out to do initially (For example, the "Other OS" feature on the PS3 or the sex game on the Kinect). Modding is also in the same boat. @PixelAddict Or that there is such a flood of garbage games that it's hard to figure out what games are good anymore (Wii). In so many ways, PS3 "hacking" is also due to it's File Sharing, which Sony failed to really handle. I know some people who are sharing things like "map packs" and "games" among several PS3's without actually purchasing.
Even more evidance that Treyarch are the brains whilst IW are the brawn. Treyarch know what they're doing.
so far BO is not affected u never know about these hackers man... they might just crack the game next week or month maybe.... lets just hope they stick to these level of hacking games and not the consumers credit card or sensitive infos....
Its only cod mwf 2 lol noone really cares about that game any more anyway..seeing as how they are already going after people for hacking and banning is happening left and right I don't see this trend lasting long anyway, you'll see a patch from sony in the next month or two and what can't be fixed on cod4 noone really cares about,at least black ops isn't being touched do to the internal coding they put to help restrict hacking. But this is just showing game makers they need to be more involved with protecting the products they take the time to make for us to enjoy.
@ taino1128... Why are you trying to start a console war in the comments section? I have a ps3 and 360 and had both since when they came out. XBOX LIVE destroys PS online, sorry. MaG wont save it considering the game sucks. Xbox has a game called halo that is one of the most competitive games on any console (MLG). 256 players means nothing especially if you play competitively in which 4v4 or 5v5 is the max. OT. MW2 is the most BROKEN game i ever played on a console. There has been hackers in live since day 1 (so taino i dont know what you're talking about there) The game is the noobiest/easiest game ever, so maybe this is a good thing so people will finally stop playing that terrible game.
This is (or was) about opening the security on a machine to change or add features. Perfectly legal according to the Iphone jailbreak ruling earlier last year. "Hacking" to manipulate game code in order to cheat or artificially boost your stats in a game is cheating. Can we try to separate the terms hacking and cheating? Let's not make "hacking" a universal all encompassing term like we did lag. Lag and low frame rate are two different things... some of you people make my brain hurt.
@CrusaderX7 think PC has more hackers? i got two words for you, Dedicated Servers. We may have a hacker once then the almighty ban hammer comes down and we never see them again.
@parrot_of_adun You do realize that playing on XBL with a hacked machine leads to the banhammer being dropped, right? This is why kiddies who can't afford to pay full retail play their games offline only.
metalkid9 said: @blackace, your logic is that of a 2nd grader. **************************************************************** Well, the truth hurts, I know. I don't play hardly any multiplat games on the PS3 and even the exclusives I don't play online much. I wonder what kind of hacks are being done on GT5. I want to play that online next.
@mardinn please listen, Sony pulled the other OS because people were trying to hack it through the OS which was itself a security weak point. So to say the hackers did the ps3 in revenge is utter garbage they were already doing it and thats why other OS got pulled. Dont stand up for the lame brained crooks who hack machines there one and only goal is Piracy dont believe all this Homebrew rubbish it is just a smokescreen. Geohot and the like are utter nobs for doing this because now all we'll get is cheating online thats ruined, and more game developers going out of business cos of all the piracy. Well done Geohot youve ruined the PS3 for nearly 40 million people, what a nob he is! He should go to jail for the rest of his natural life imo!!
@Elfrancorifle Listen.. Sony removed Linux support. He wanted to get it back. He is now trying to take back what is his rightfully. Because He Bought the PS3. They advertised that it'd have Other OS. Then they've removed it. What is the conclusion? Sony.. you are the one to blame. If you would not have removed the other os support. Everything would've been fine.
@Black_Adder_ True, i'm aware of the USB hack, it was ridiculously easy but again people need some form of knowledge to use it + as you say, cant be used online or you end up with a bricked console. This code leak from what I can tell will allow pirated games to be played on a "fresh" PS3 and allow them to play online etc because as far as the console is concerned the games 100% legitimate & as such Sony have no way of knowing what's legal & whats not, meaning they cant ban the user or brick the consoles etc.... that being said, Bluray discs & recorders are still far from being cheap so that might slow the mass-piracy market Of course, if i'm wrong then fair enough... part of me hopes I've read the reports wrong.
Lmao looks like all hell is gonna break loose but i dont believe this is just because of the PS3 hack. Console mods are far less common than PC and these add on's can be fun but it is a double edged sword as ppl can cheat with it. MW is a prime target due to its player base, some idiots lookin for trouble....they have brought this on themselves
Sure blame Sony for your stupidity! Remember that the game got problems since way before the hack from GeoHOT! F U ACTIVISION AND IW! IW is just mad cause they all have left is 402, 3 programming chimps and the janitor...
sounds like activision just doesnt want to justify that the game is super broken and hackers and boosters have too much fun on it, while on microsoft's console, if someone is busted cheating, someone can notify them and then get them BANNED. activision could do this, but they just wont.
WoW... rofl!... i knew this hacking thing would be getting better... "every action causes a reaction"... xD ....if stuff like this is happening doesn't help the hackers either... i have a feeling the hammer is going to come down hard on them... i'm just saying... ^__^
