PS3 getting 160GB, 320GB models
Sony launches higher capacity hardware in North America; $400 Sports Champion Move bundle to include motion-sensing controller, game, 320GB system, Blu-ray demo disc next month.
Sony and Microsoft are banking on their motion-sensing peripheral add-ons to bolster console sales this holiday season, and that means new hardware bundles for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Microsoft has already announced one Xbox 360 bundle featuring its Kinect camera, and Sony followed suit today with a PS3 Move hardware bundle, as well as higher capacity hard drives for its stand-alone systems.
When the PlayStation Move launches September 19, Sony will offer a $400 PS3 Sports Champion Move package that includes the new 320GB model of the hardware, a Move controller, the PlayStation Eye camera, a copy of Sports Champions, and a Blu-ray demo disc. A Sony representative told GameSpot that "at this point," the 320GB version of the PS3 hardware can only be purchased in the Move bundle.
Sony also today announced a 160GB version of the PS3 that it has already begun shipping to retailers. The new version of the hardware sells for $300, the same price point as the 120GB configuration of the PS3.
Both versions of the hardware were revealed during Sony's Gamescom press conference. For more on the event's news--including the returns of Insomniac's Ratchet and Clank and Resistance franchises--check out GameSpot's complete live blog of the event.
@cjburnfist it maybe died alittle but that game beats every xbox game combined... and i dont think any other game coming out will beat it.... TRUST ME I LOVE XBOX!.. and i tried every game coming out you can think of at a conference... SOCOM 4 FOR THE WIN!!!
WTF Sony get on the Backwards Compatibility bandwagon... my kingdom hearts and FF10 games need attention
@cierraroxs yeah i barely do it as well ... i guess it works better off if you rent games and download them to your hard drive ...
@fmacraze find a delivery job or buy phones or something similar on the cheap then try getting a $100+ turnover on reselling them
yea more space
Just curious, do any of you guys use more than 50GB on your systems cause I have a 360 Elite and have only gone over 50GB because I install discs to the hard drive.
anyone got any ideas how to make $400+ in about 3 weeks?
@mjc0961: This is what I was previously talking about. You allmighty and all-knowing american guys ignore everything about everyone else. The 40Gb model was the launch model, but not in America, in Europe. Check your facts. Might also want to check those about the PS3 being hacked... cause it's not a usb stick. Also don't mention piracy to a PS3 user. The 360 has been hacked in nearly a month after it's release and... It took 5 years for the PS3 and it's still not looking too good. @bloodyaltair: no offence dood, but where did you get that info? All PS3 games are piracy-free. Check your source again, cause it might be fake.
@nerd_assassin There it is Yup.
@mjc0961 Where's your source about that PS3 piracy USB-poppin thing?
@FlamingNinja77 Fanboy much?

Jesus...Sony really needs to launch a model that supports BC. I wanted to update my launch PS3 to a slim, but haven't yet because it still doesn't have BC, I'm still baffled that they say they can't do BC on the PS3 due to emulation issues, but they were still able to successfully launch the PS3 with BC that played pretty good to begin with anyway. It can do all of this crazy high tech stuff, but it can't read a PS2 disc? C'moooooooon Sony.
I think Sony just does this to give the people who make those nice little charts on hardware revisions for Wikis migraines. Anyway thanks but no thanks Sony, I already have a 320GB drive in my original launch model PS3, take your doesn't-play-PS2-games model and shove it. ;) @MacenKrace: There is no such thing as a launch 40GB, at launch they had 60GB and 20GB, no 40. And you're very sorely mistaken about the PS3 being safe from piracy, it was just recently cracked and you need no tech skills whatsoever. Unlike the 360 which you'd have to open and play with the internals, for the PS3 you just pop in a USB device and away you go. So not only is the PS3 no longer safe from piracy, it's now the easiest console to pirate on.
Ill get the low end ps3 and buy a cheaper hd too....hopefully by end of year so itll be another price cut by holidays
You all know what this means, PRICE DROP! And since all of the Sony weebols will give these overpriced models a market, I can buy a 120 and put a 500 in it.

@sonicmask You make one change, shame on you Naughty Dog. You make two mistakes, shame on me for trusting you'll keep your word. They said they would make no health changes after 1.04, and a few months ago we are graced with getting killed by three pistol shots. UC2 died, but indeed was a good game. Either way, we are comparing this to the Kinect Bundle which includes a 4GB stick thing correct? This is clearly the better deal, but I already have a PS3, going to be hard to convince me to buy another one just because of this bundled. Still 400$ for a 320 GB system, and all of this Move equipment is one heck of a deal.
I now have a 320GB Ps3 because I posess a screwdriver and opposable thumbs, and mine has BC :) With regards to the alleged Ps3 'hack', since it plugs into the USB port it's probably one firmware update from being killed off as soon as Sony spot how to detect it. Given that Sony made the Ps3 region-free there's little justifiable reason for jailbreaking one anyway.
@CisqoRouter You're definitely right about that. The Xbox360 provides everything social services wherever you want them. And overall better community if you don't count a few games.
thumbs up if u like avenged sevenfold.
It's only a matter of time before 1TB hard drives are marketed.
Good news. Coolyfett loves how Sony does business, all of there devices are great.
@Valkarie3: My thoughts exactly. Bigger HDs all the time, no actual features added. BC was a real, highly advertised feature. Removing it means a lot. @MacenKrace: The PS3 has been hacked through USB. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2010/08/the-ps3-jailbroken-usb-hack-allows-homebrew-copied-games.ars Guess now they'll remove support for external media. :P
@RatchetV1 DUDE UNCHARTED 2.... I dont think there is a game out or coming out going to top that game... THAT GAME IS PERFECT!...RIGHT BEHIND ZELDA OCARINA OF TIME!
@MacenKrace im not trying to start anything but mgs4 was leaked before ts lauch nothing is safe from piracy not the 360 not the wii dsi 3ds, especially last gen the pirates could leak anything last gen
Sony can pack as many Gigs as possible, but its not going to replace backwards Compatibility the original system toted. I didn't buy a PS3 at launch because I couldn't preorder it, and wasn't Rich enough to drop $400+ on a new system. I lucked out to buy someones Launch system and that'll last me till the PS4 comes out. But I pray that I can preorder it, or be rich enough to drop, what is sure to be a $600 price point whenever it happens.
For some reason I kind of like the idea of just Packing in the PS Move with a game. In order to get a 320gig HDD. Even though you can do it yourself
My 40Gb launch model is still holding up well. I may try upgrading soon enough with the move pack. @CisqoRouter the 360 is a typical american stereotype and more popular because it's already hacked... on the other hand we have the still safe PS3 with no piracy.
Very nice glad to see they are getting more and more models out with lowered prices so that way if my 80gb 2009 model dies on me I can always get me a slim model. :)
UNCHARTED 2 BABY!!!!
You can add all the HDD space you want, but it's still not going to make up for your lackluster online experience. Xbox Live is far superior to the offering from PSN, and until they resolve that the Xbox360 will continue to be most players system of choice.
aaaah I can't fricken wait to get my ps3.. I have been waiting for almost 4 years UGH!!!!
I hate the Move.
@wwlettsome Save your money! But serioulsly, there are a lot of new games coming out :D No one needs that much space. Sony is just trying to make more money while the PS3 is finally selling some numbers.
This is cool, but...no one needs that much space. On my Xbox, I use just 40 GB of space. And I install games, download movies, buy DLC's, the works. On my computer, I use less then 100, and I've had it for over a year and download frequently. It's not that hard to just clean up a smaller hard drive every now and then for room.
Hardrive space is crucial in todays technology. Having more space is important but i think that hardrive capacity should not be so focused on. ColonelGuile is right that backwards compatability would cause a greater jump in sales, as well as satisfy fans of the playstation system. Also if Sony begins to pump out a ton of ps2 games and more ps1 on the psn network. maybe then people will lean towards the ps3. Plus any standard dvd movie as well as the blu ray movies look more than amazing through HD.
Still no backwards compatibility with PS2 games? I guarantee you that if Sony released a slim PS3 version with full PS2/PS1 support, priced at $299, Sony would see a huge jump in sales, because, believe it or not, some of the greatest games of all time still reside on PS2 - regardless of today's date (that would be the year 2010), gamers still play the older games, and want to continue to play the older games, while playing on a next-gen console. Then there's motion control for Sony and M$. This has fail written all over it. The Wii has done this already and has profited from it greatly. Sony and M$'s plans to "make it better" will not get people from the Wii to the PS3 or 360. Fact. But on that note, I am not going to lie, the technology IS really awesome and some of these games with "motion" support look interesting, but it is NOT what today's gamer wants. Period.
well i need a slim ps3 for space in meaning room to put my games in my room i'll get the 160gb ps3 i dont really need alot of memory but why for more memory
These are great news but the fact is that the console war is going to be beaten by the one that offers the better price point for the bundle. Very true indeed that the PS3 has shown signifficant signs of sales improvement since the price point reduction (I got me a slim one just for the looks of it even after owning two nice fat BW compat PS3s!). I am not into the whole "move/kinect/wii" but this is great for the casual gamer looking to get the real HD quality games witht the interactive gameplay casual gamers are looking these.days.
I haven't gotten a PS3 yet, so might have to take the plunge next month!
Sony minds well cut the crap and just make a 500GB PS3..
- aaah, yes, a good time to buy a ps3 and @digi-demon, yeah sony "innovator"...... Wii HD enough said. -
ah Sony... always the innovator...
Sounds like a good deal for casuals (the move one)
That's nice
Now that is a big hard drive.........(giggles like a little girl)
Some people don't understand this strategy. This is not really for people who already have a PS3. This is for people who is thinking of getting a PS3 and who is on the fence about it. Anyway I never had a problem with my HDD. Anyway I had the 40 then I decided to upgrade to the 120Gig because I didn't wanna deal with getting the YLOD. I don't regret I think if you have the old model it might be good for those who wanna upgrade because of some of the hardware issues the old models have. On topic though these bundles are for the casual market and also for the people who have yet to buy a PS3.
What's up with the HDD hate? The 160GB models STILL cost the same. They are giving better HDD options, I wouldn't want to have 20GB on my PS3 slim if Sony still keep the old capacities. The 320 GB costs more but it's because it has the MOVE. And I probably missed out something but I read some updates break 3rd party HDDs so people who doesn't want to take any risks, this is a good option, anyway. I've never had any problems when downloading updates.
Does it worth buying a ps3 or an xbox 360 now?
