GAMESPOT CAN YOU GUYZ PLEASE DELIVER OUR SINCERE REQUESTS TO ROCKSTAR AND TELL THEM WE WANT GTA 4 TO LAUNCH ON PC!
Hardware-and-software package announced for Rockstar's crime-'em-up; £319.99 deal will land on April 29.
It's fair to say that Grand Theft Auto IV's April 29 release date is a big day on the gaming calendar. Janco Partners' Mike Hickey said that the game could "conceivably" ship 9.5 million units in one week, while Variety said that GTAIV could make $400 million in revenue in the same period.
Such performance is also sure to drive sales of consoles, and while the game will land on both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, Sony has made the first move to bundle hardware and software together at launch. A package of its 40GB PS3 console, a Sixaxis controller, and the standard edition of GTAIV will hit European stores on April 29, with a recommended retail price of £319.99 in the UK (approx $635) and €439 in Europe.
Sony's package represents a £30 saving ($59) on the recommended retail price of the game and the console when sold separately, as they retail for £49.99 ($99) and £299.99 ($595), respectively. The news follows a similar announcement in Australia, where the exact same bundle is being offered for A$749.95 ($713).
David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, said, "We are delighted to offer the millions of PS3 and GTA fans the ultimate gaming package."
GameSpot contacted Microsoft UK to see if a similar bundle will be offered for the Xbox 360 in the UK, but had not received a reply as of press time.
@ Kaiz1992. I actually got a free month of XBL twice, with the last two repairs they sent me. I never claimed I bought 3 X-box 360's. I'm on my 4th console because each time they send me a refurb unit. The first time they charged me $170, which they eventually refunded because it was 4 months and the warranty was only 90 days. The second time it was just over a year so I had to pay $170 for the repairs again (and this time added the extra $75 for an extended warranty). When they extended the warranty to 3 years I had to fight with them to get this $170 back as they said they didn't charge me the second $170 charge and had already paid me back. This was a nightmare. You said "Funny, one xbox live is all they give you. If i were them i'd give you nothing, pal." I hope it happens to you, I really do. I hope it breaks tonight and you have to sit around holding your copy of GTA4 for just over a month waiting to play it, like I had to do with Halo3. Usually I stick with "I wouldn't wish this type of gaming experience on anyone," but I'll make an exception for you based on that comment. And thanks for your permission to buy GTA on my system of choice. I never claimed it was better on the PS3, I haven't played it, how the hell would I know? That's just what I read. You mentioned you hate the whole console war thing and yet here you are perpetuating it. I'm a 360 fan who has stuck with his console through some pretty frustrating times. It really looks like you who has rushed in here, guns a blazing to protect your precious system of choice. I didn't do anything wrong here, I'm just sharing a personal storey about what happened to me. I suppose unless gamers are 100% pro MS you think they should keep their mouths shut at all times. Well here's a shock for you, some of us have had a bit of a rough ride.
@Kaiz1992, He said he had it fixed/replaced 3 times by Microsoft, not that he paid for 3 replacement. Also, although Live is optional, it is a very valid point from whoever chooses to make it that they get free online play on the PS3 while you have to pay for XBox Live to get online play on the 360 copy. What may be optional for you may not be optional for some one that gets it for free in another platform. This being said by some one that wants the 360 copy.
Darkride, judging from your post. You truly seem to act like a fanboy. Like it or not. Superiority means nothing. Do you buy a game on another console just for some little superiority? It's completely stupid. You had to replace your 360 probably because you're a very unlucky guy. There are actually some people who have that yet to happen and some have probably had a 360 almost as long as you. Funny, one xbox live is all they give you. If i were them i'd give you nothing, pal. Perhaps including Xbox Live it's more than the PS3 but you can bet yourself it'll be quite a while before it reaches it's price and xbox live is completely optional. I'm really getting tired of this ''MY GAME BETTER THAN YOURS'' crud. Go buy your ''superior'' PS3 'version and that's it. This whole which console is better war is idiotic and i'm surprised it's still going. I cannot go into a forum without seeing one stupid debate or arguement which is a complete waste of time and pointless. I also highly doubt that you bought an Xbox360 3 times. @condemned100 : I couldn't have said it better myself. Great post. I applaud you.
@ Lungorthar. Actually, my C64 had a long, fulfilled run until I thought I'd try to make some "modifications" to it. A puff of smoke actually came up from the keyboard, like in the movies. So no. No, it wasn't my C64. :)
Darkride, I know witch one it is, its your Comodore 64!!!! I told everyone those sucked, no one listened, everyone told me that 25 year life was good enough.... bleh, what do they know!!! So, when is the Atari2600 getting GTA4 again?
_guenter_26 said "darkride66 You are just sad that your system sucks." Which system? I own all three. Actually, the only one that makes me sad is the one that's I've had to replace 3 times now and almost never buy games for anymore because I'm afraid to play on it. 3 guesses which that one is. Here's a hint. It's not my Wii or my PS3.
@twistedhades PS3 profitable by August, say Nikko Citigroup analysts Nikko Citigroup analysts have upgraded their rating on Sony, anticipating that the company will start to break even on the PS3 in August. If correct, this would be three months earlier than analysts have previously speculated. In January, Sony's Kaz Hirai said that the company would be shooting for profitability within the fiscal year that began in April. According to Endgadget, Sony's break even point will come only when both the cell processor and RSX graphics chip are shrunk to smaller sizes. The latest news has caused rumours of a slimmer model PS3 to resurface, although Sony has not commented on such speculation. They have already been making a profit. Last year IIRC Sony cut the cost of making the PS3 in half, and not long after that they reported that they were back in black. Their profits at the end of the year barely managed to out weigh their losses in the beginning of 07', but they still managed to get a profit.
_guenter_26 said "you dont have to have XBL to enjoy GTA4. Also you get a month free when tou sing up for XBL so you dont have to go by a year right away." That's awfully nice of MS, give me a month of free XBL and then start charging me to play 100% of the games I buy. Funny, one month of free XBL is what they gave me when they returned my 3rd faulty console. At any rate, the point is I don't have to have XBL to enjoy 100% on Tuesday. I can just buy it for my PS3. As it turns out, from numerous video game publications reporting in now, it's the superior version of the game anyway.
darkride66 you dont have to have XBL to enjoy GTA4. Also you get a month free when tou sing up for XBL so you dont have to go by a year right away.
Too bad, they could have added a custom paint job for the PS3. That would really attract GTA fans. Then again, I already bought my PS3 and am not willing to buy a new one (or even another XBox360) for a GTA edition. But hey, 59 dollars warrant a new PSP/DS/whatever game!
_guenter_26 said "I still dont see what the fuss is about, it would be cheaper to buy a 360 and GTA4 than this bundle." But then throw in the $50 bucks a year you have to spend on the 360 to play 100% of the game and suddenly they're the same price. Except if you want to continue playing GTA4 next year that's another $50, then another $50...
I still dont see what the fuss is about, it would be cheaper to buy a 360 and GTA4 than this bundle.
I'm not a big fan of 'bundles' because the usual packaging doesn't offer a real discount (off of buying unit/games separately), or they offer some crappy game you wouldn't buy in the first place. This, however, new highly anticipated game, and a discount price... has potential.
the dualshock 3 ain't in the UK yet unfortunately, thats why this bundle has the Sixaxis - why its not out i don't know, abit like Rock Band which won't be in the UK till bout summer for the PS3 at a price more than double the american version on the current exchange rate! also to the people claiming $635 as the price need to realise that this is the UK pound sterling price in dollars on the exchange rate
Originally, I read that this bundle would include the Dualshock3. It doesn't and it's a shame because it's far better than the regular Sixaxis. Boo, Sony! If you want to blow out your stock, just drop the price of the sixaxis so we can use those as extra controllers when friends are over.
"Why get this over-priced PS3 bundle when you could get a 360 and gta for less." Because the PS3 is a revolutionary games counsel. I personally have neither atm, (still have my PS2 and PS1), but I am considering getting a PS3. Maybe split the costs between me and my brothers =).
I Shall not speak anymore my Words are Apparantly Hurtful to others since I got a warning from Gamespot's Moderators.
back on point with this article. If it were available in the U.S. I think i would still purchase the MGS4 version. DS3 and 80 gig, way better!
Not the same game, but my brother has both machines and he downloaded the Devil May Cry demo for both. A tiny unfairness is that he has his 360 connected with the component cables, meaning 1080i, while the PS3 is directly to DVI at 1080p (my 360 is hooked DVI @ 1080p.) He claims to no end he can distinguish a slight superiority on the PS3 version, as do some reviews, but with everything moving, I notice no difference at all between both versions. A developer, who is nitpicking on everything, may surely see the tiniest improvement on his baby on one machine or the other, the question is: once they both out, will the difference be something you can pinpoint in moving game play and not just in still screen shots? Either way, I'm going with the 360 version, not for the potential superiority or love for the machine or anything like that, its simply my tiny addiction to Achievements. I just like having those "online bragging badges" that I can show off saying "i beat the game 100%" (even if I have still to do that in any game :P Thats the same reason that if there is any possibility of a 360 MGS4, I'll wait until I get tired or beat every game I have 100%. DLC is another huge bonus. Extra content beats any [potential] extra visuals for me by a huge margin. Interesting point to look at, though... any DLC will only work on the 360s with HDD, will this means that any user of GTA4 DLC will also start seeing performance improvements based around them having a HDD? I don't condemn anyone for getting another version though.
@ McGregor. I'd recommend doing a google search for that article, it was a good one. Mr. Houser didn't say the differences were due to any type of system limitations or anything, just that the PS3 version looked smoother and more subtle and he liked that better.
@ Lungorthar. Yeah, it sucks. You get caught in the cycle at that point. When your 360 breaks down it's replaced by a 360 that broke down and was refurbished. It's not uncommon to find people like me who, once the first one goes, then quickly go through a few refurbs. I wish MS would just suck it up and send us new ones, so I don't have to worry about it anymore.
@darkride66 "I thought less compression is good? I'm no tech guy, but my understanding was less compression equals less loss of quality equals more processing power that doesn't have to be spent on decompressing." Most decompression is very light on the cpu, and there is absolutely nothing that is 100% uncompressed at the same time. A completely uncompressed 1080p movie at 30 frames per second would take 834.2GB per hour, and that is just video without audio or subtitles or menus. Now you can have an idea how much any BlueRay compresses and still looks amazingly crisp.
darkride66, I 100% agree with you that the 360 "core" (i believe this is what you're talking about when you mentioned arcade) lacking a hard drive is ultimately going to be the weak point of the core system. The ps3 having a hard drive as standard in all tiers of their system gives them an advantage. they don't have to alienate a certain group of owners when they optimize a game to utilize the hard drive. Something that developers will have to decide when debating on hard drive optimization. Although i haven't read the article about gtaIV, this could be the reason the developer likes the ps3 version more. It is likely that they weren't willing to alienate "core" owners, so they removed a couple of graphical features in the xbox 360 version so it will run smooth. Of course only time will tell if the versions are noticibly different.
Morning GTA IV News [ 66 Comments ] Wednesday, 23 April, 2008 at 6:38 PST | Adriaan | Print News There are just a little over five days left until the release of GTA IV, and this morning we bring you five news stories. Firstly, this week IGN is running a "GTA IV week", where new content is posted everyday. Yesterday we already reported on the interview with the game's Art Director, Aaron Garbut, which can be read here. Last night they published an article detailing four of the game's multiplayer modes - covering Free Mode, Team Mafiya Work, Team Car Jack City and Turf War. Read that over here. Yesterday we reported on the US edition of OXM giving the game a final score of 9.5/10, as seen here. Today we have news on another Xbox magazine, Xbox World 360(UK), who gave the game a score of 98%, saying the game has an "oscar-worthy dialogue", "unfeasibly rich gameworld" and "inspiring mission design". Contrary to what many expected, it seems as though the PlayStation 3 version is selling more than the Xbox 360 version at certain large retailers. UK retailer ASDA is reporting that the PS3 version is selling three times more than its rival - the Xbox 360. Over in Australia, EB Games is reporting that while their pre-sales figures show both versions selling fairly close, the PS3 version is in the lead. Another retailer in that country, Gametraders, is saying the PS3 version is selling double than the Xbox 360. Interesting indeed, I myself - who is a big fan of the Xbox 360 - will be getting the PlayStation 3 version, as I've read and heard personally from people who have played the game already that this version is undoubtedly superior to the Xbox 360. Granted, not as much that I would recommend going out to buy a PS3 console if you have a 360 already. Too bad that episodic content is Xbox exclusive, is Take-Two/Rockstar regretting that decision now? If you live in the U.S. and have access to G4TV, then you can tune in this Sunday at noon, as the channel will be showing game play footage of the game. According to them, this will be the first place where such footage will be available to the public. Lastly, Capcom in Japan announced that they'll be publishing the game locally later this year. Stay tuned for all the updates!
@darkride66 I have to say that although I have heard people say they had issues with their 360, enough to know its not just a rumor, I have never had issue with mine, nor anyone in my family (everyone in my family has one) or anyone I even know in person. If you had 4 replacements break down on you (unless it was simply them fixing the same unit) you were VERY unlucky.
@edcrow "have you not herd the "too big for blu ray" stories coming straight from Hideo Kojima's mouth? " I remember the same being told about Resident Evil 2 and the original PSX vs N64. 2 CDs were certification that it would never happen. Yet it happened, without removal of any movie, in a 64MB cart on top of all. They simply came out with a better compression scheme. Even ignoring the possibility of smarter compression, Lost Odyssey for the 360 takes up 4 DVD disks, so even that is not unheard off. Still, MGS2 was huge disappointment for me and 3 was just OK (for me) I'll just see how MGS4 fares out. I do plan to get a PS3 eventually anyways, but not because of one simple game or because of superiority.
McGregor mentioned "I don't think the 360 has storage issues. Multiple discs=solved storage problems." I don't think that's the issue, it's not being able to rely on a harddrive being there that's a problem. Rockstar apparently had trouble with this, the Crysis devlopers said they couldn't port Crysis over for the same reason, and even look at Burnout. If you don't have a hard drive you can't even play this online. It's nice that MS offered the arcade as more of a budget choice for people but I've always been concerned that it may prove a bit shortsighted.
I don't think the 360 has storage issues. Blue Dragon showed us that this problem is easily solved, multiple discs=solved storage problems.
@ Autolycus. Yeah. Developers didn't like the PS2 very much either. Anyway, I don't have a link for you, but it was an interview that Sam Houser did for 1up.com recently. Shouldn't be too hard to find. He talks a bit about both issues you brought up, the difficulties working with the different PS3 architecture and the 360's storage issues. And on your other post, I thought less compression is good? I'm no tech guy, but my understanding was less compression equals less loss of quality equals more processing power that doesn't have to be spent on decompressing. Without getting too technical, how can having more power because you don't have to worry about decompressing be bad, not to mention no quality loss in sound and video?
edcrou Even developers have their favorite systems (not always based on sales of quantity). I could create you a PONG game in 1 week and fill up 25gb too, not that hard to do. Hideo is known for not using any form of compression, which is just not smart. So them to be full of data, from a developer who doesnt compress anything (which does NOT mean better quality, despite what the audiophiles and videophiles need to believe), it really doesnt prove anything. Especially since MGS4 will be chalked full of CGI movies that eat up a TON of disc space.
darkride66 I also read that the developers preferred the 360 over the ps3 any day of the week. The two reasons it got pushed back where because 1) they had to take care of the users without hard drives and 2) because the development was taking MUCH LONGER THEN EXPECTED because the PS3 architecture is so different (no better, just different). And you have a link to this article where he says he preferes the PS3 version over the 360 version?
635 bucks, dyam! And NO RUMBLE CONTROLLER? give me a break. They dont want to hurt sales from their MGS4 bundle, l a m e. how about some customer appreciation JUST ONCE, instead of profit appreciation.
@ edcrou Lost Odysey for the 360 came as a 4 disc set. I'm pretty sure if MGS4 has resounding success on the PS3 & if Kojima hasn't signed an exclusivity deal with SCE it would be possible to port it over to the 360. But, like you said, it would take quite a few cd's to do it. Don't forget, 10 years ago FFVII was a 4 disc game for the PS1 as was some other titles like Syphon Filter.
For those of you arguing here, may I suggest leaving that for messaging? Make your points and close the comversation please. Now, to the point at hand, I'm surprised that X360 has not announced something similar yet. I can't speak for everyone of course, but within my friend circle, it seems that everyone was (and still is) waiting for GTA 4, MGS4, and FFXIII before considering going Next Gen.
The Brits & Ausies are getting ripped man. They're getting dated product. They definitely are getting less bang for their buck. The UK GTAIV bundle is highway robbery. The US MGS4 bundle is far superior. Buy the US version of the MGS4 bundle when it comes out then buy GTAIV. You're essentially getting a game & a NEW DS3 controller for free & twice the memory capacity for a lot less... That's if you can actually do it. Im not sure if it's legal or not... I guess you could get one if you had a voltage converter (220 to 110) & you'd also have to have a multi-regional t.v. I bought one like 17 years ago in Germany that was dual voltage & was NTSC/PAL & something else. So, it's possible but I don't know about import laws of electronic equipment (game systems) purchased by consumers. I do remember sometime in the past they disallowed this due to the strength of certain currencies causing financial losses of these major corporations like Sony, Nintendo, etc. Now I'm just babbling... move to the US or Japan & game here if you want to be treated fairly when it comes to your gaming.
@ Lungorthar. Although I'm sure the PS3 and 360 versions will be similar, Rockstar's president recently voiced his preference for the look and feel of the PS3 version over the 360 version. I also understand that the PS3 has more pedestrians. There is an install available for the 360 if you have a hard drive, but arcade and core users can probably expect a bit of a performance hit. I think these differences are minor in the grand scheme of things and would be very surprised if one version was much different from the other. Personally, I'm forgoing the DLC and buying my copy for my PS3. I'm on my forth 360 console and don't like to push it too hard because the last one MS sent me was older than the one it replaced. I don't want to be sitting around waiting for my console to come back like I was when Halo3 came out. That hurt.
Lungorthar have you not herd the "too big for blu ray" stories coming straight from Hideo Kojima's mouth? there is no way in a million years that MGS4 will hit the 360, not unless its released on 4-5 standard dvds, which, lets face it, will never happen. i feel this is going to be the case for many games in the future, and will eventually lead to the demise of the 360.
@GamerYnoX: Have you played GTA4 already? I would love to see your full review of the game and detailed comparison between the 360 and PS3 versions, since you seem to be able to solidly state right now the PS3 version is superior you should be able to write such a review. As for MG4, there is enough buzz out there to believe an X360 version will indeed come out, although very likely up to a year after the PS3 version. I?m a patient man, though.
