finally some rpg on the ps3. I could get it for the PC though, since that is how I usually play them, but might give the PS3 a try for this one.
Game Informer names unnamed consoles that will host BioWare's spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate next holiday season; PC version still on track for "early 2009."
In 2004, Canadian developer BioWare unveiled its all-new fantasy role-playing franchise, Dragon Age. The game was assumed to be PC-only, until 2005, when studio heads Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka told GameSpot that "there will be other versions that will be on other platforms." However, it wasn't until Electronic Arts' presentation at this year's E3 Media & Business Summit that the game was officially confirmed as coming to consoles.
Now, BioWare has revealed exactly which consoles Dragon Age will arrive on--and when those versions will ship. The November issue of Game Informer lists the game as arriving on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in "holiday 2009," several months behind the PC edition. As first revealed in June, the original version of the RPG, now called Dragon Age: Origins, will arrive in the first quarter of next year.
When asked for comment, BioWare reps confirmed the GI story's accuracy and that it had not previously named consoles for Dragon Age, but they declined to comment further. However, the article flatly states that the console editions of the game will reflect the "core PC experience" with some interface tweaking and will not be watered-down console ports.
Dragon Age: Origins is also notable for being BioWare's first PS3 project. Its confirmation also raises the possibilities that other upcoming BioWare titles--such as Mass Effect 2--may find their way onto Sony's console. The first Mass Effect was initially an Xbox 360 exclusive published by Microsoft Game Studios but was ported to the PC after IP-holder BioWare was bought by EA, which is ardently console-agnostic.
It doesn't matter whether Dragon Age or Mass Effect comes out on PS3 or not. What matters is BioWare is making amazing RPGs. And we all love them for that.
PS3 owners could also(if they havent) get the PC version of Mass Effect like I did. then they wont get lost story wise.
Mass Effect was amazing and I will get Dragon Age & Mass Effect 2 simply because of that fact. And who cares if it comes to the PS3 also? PS3 players should get to enjoy the awesomeness that is Mass Effect. (although they may be lost story-wise starting off on #2).
Is all this nessecery, they could just write that Bioware is making a game, period. Then I'd go and buy it. Nah, but I read up on this game and of course I gotta pick it up. My biggest concern is that EA is involved with it. Bioware has had a decent track record, but y'know what they say about being on the top...There's no where to go but down. EA might be the kryptonite to this Superman. (sure hope not though)
This better be good - it's taken far, far too long for this game to come out, I remember when it was very first announced, then visciously cancelled.
awwwww c'mon, mass-effect on the PS3 just wouldn't be the same, but I guess Sony fans could say the same about FFXIII on the 360. Still, i'm glad this game is coming to consoles, it'll be nice to have a good classic RPG on the new consoles.
I have to agree with zomglolcats. If a great game is released on all platforms then the developers make more money which = more great games.
As long as it 's not waterd down in the gameplay and AI departments. I won't expect it to look as good on consloles as on PC. But even if it "only" looks as good as Mass Effect with the gameplay intact I'll be very, very happy
I agree with Jedited255m but I can see that a medieval game could be better on the consoles, because I prefer sword based combat on a controller.
@humorguy, I agree with you about Jade Empire but Mass Effect was almost ment to be played on a PC. When you compare the console on PC versions the interface is much more intuitive on the PC. That and the fact that it's a shooter means it plays well on both platforms.
I always worry when games come out on console first - we see far too many 'lite' rpg's (ie so-called 'Action-RPG's') because of consideration for the console market. Do we really think Jade Empire and Mass Effect would have been the way they were if there were no console market? Or would they have been much deeper and more hardcore? I think the latter!
Exactly what I wanted, awesome! I never thought I would be able to play this game because of my PC hardware not being up to the task. I consider desktops relics so I wont be investing in one and upgrading my laptop to handle these games is very expensive and results in a bulky power hungry machine...so, awesome news.
doyousmellthat PETRI87, Bioware have already CONFIRMED the Pc version of Mass Effect 2 and 3 will be shortly after consoles, re-check your sources buddy. *************************************** Yes, it looks like Mass Effect 2 will be coming to the PC. I suggest they release it for the consoles first only because if it hits the PC first, everyone will pirate the game to death and then won't want to get it for the game console. Bioware will lose MILLIONS. Sure they have a large PC fan base, mainly because of great games like Baldur's Gate and KotoR, but they will sell millions more on the game console. http://www.videogamer.com/news/14-03-2008-7779.html I will get Mass Effect 2 for the XBox 360, but Dragon Age for the PC.
As a biased PC owner and player (and an absolutely cluzty button masher and uncoordinated console player) I am happy to see PC releases. I have absolutely no bias against console games - as long as they are released for PCs as well. I bought Mass Effect on 360 because they weren't releasing it on PC - pissed that the release on PC requires a PC2.0 slot - I have to now upgrade my CPU and video card - on an older uber gaming rig.#$@&*#%^$!!! If they have to "dumb down" the game for consoles - or for other country censorship requirements - Don't have an issue with that either - as zomglocats said, $ talks. However - I would hope that they release the original version on time and to PC and then do the necessary changes - after that...Because of course, my needs are more important!!LOL - I think I may be in love with EA for their PC biased stance (not withstanding some of their less than excellent releases and their pursuit of the $ - not that there is anything wrong with that...) Mid range PCs are always better than Consoles - they have a low grade CPU - think about when they start developing and release the consoles vs the latest recent CPUs released after the console release - and small (like 20 gig) Hard drives - you can get barebone gaming rigs for 500 that blow away the consoles - NewEgg and Tiger are good places to start. Anyway, looking forward to this and hope it lives up to Baldurs gate... less than 2 weeks to Fallout 3, then Baldurs gate 3 in Jan/Feb?!! calling in sick, yeah boooooy!
People are going to have to get over their multiplatform bias. Pretty much every company is leaning towards multiplatform nowadays. It's just a fact of life and good business (wider market = more profit, plain and simple). What people need to concern themselves with is what version suits them. As long as the devs don't compromise the game to fit one specific format, then I don't see what the big deal is about multiplat.
KOTOR, Jade empire and mass effect are very dumbed down comapred to a true D7D party stle game with complex game mechanics, thats the point. Just because those games worked well on console don't mean this one well, there is a reason NWN2 is Pc only. This makes me wonder just how true of a real D7D Party RPG it will be.
PETRI87, Bioware have already CONFIRMED the Pc version of Mass Effect 2 and 3 will be shortly after consoles, re-check your sources buddy.
You need to spend at least 1200 ona PC? And thats for a mid range spectrum? WOW, WRONG, a 600 PC (Crysis PC for one that Crytek offered) now can be built and is more poweful then any conaole, a 8800GT is 80 Bucks, a Core 2 Duo @ 3.0 can be had now for less then $200, don't be so ignorant. PC version will be betetr in every way, it is aa D7D party style game witha tool set, yes, Pc version is the one to get and it is not even close. People are so warped and brainwashed into the consoels are so powerful and it takes a 2000 PC to match it, BULL.
Unless the PC version of DAO is hugely different, larger and not as dumbed-down than the console versions, I doubt DAO will be a true successor to BG2.
masterclone Posted Oct 17, 2008 1:08 pm GMT 'I guess you never played Kotor,Jade Empire, Mass effect. Games that were console first and then ported to PC.' Was KOTOR really on xbox before pcs? I dont know myself, as I never played the xbox version but I got the pc version about a year after its release and its one of the best games I ever played it, but I always thought its graphics were more advanced then an xbox port.
" blackdreamhunk Posted Oct 17, 2008 4:53 am PT hhm how are they going to make the game work with out it being watered down for consoles." I guess you never played Kotor,Jade Empire, Mass effect. Games that were console first and then ported to PC. They are all great games thou. 360 and PS3 are powerful machines, stuff wont be watered down just cause they come out on consoles.
PandaBear86: "How anybody can play a Baldur's Gate-type of game on a console gamepad is beyond me" Actually you can use same gamestyle in Dragon Age as in KOTOR, which works on consoles pretty well.
How anybody can play a Baldur's Gate-type of game on a console gamepad is beyond me. Trust me, get the PC version. You will thank me later once you see how much better keyboard/mouse is and how totally awesome user-generated mods are. Thanks to mods, I have spent over 200 hours on NeverWinter Nights.
It isn't much of a surprise that Dragon Age is coming to PS3 and 360, the preferred consoles for multi-platform games. That said I hope BioWare tweak the interface of console versions well to suit it's control scheme.
I was hoping for pc only for this game, as that was what bioware promised to get back to their, baldur's gate roots(I miss the infinity engine!). What does interest me is its coming to the ps3 too, this is good news as it means bioware games will go to both systems I own, gaming pc with 8800gts, and ps3-320gb All in glories high Depth/res! Thankfully the pc first and being ported to consoles. The way it should be! I hate games made for xbox ported to other platforms they always turn out crappy, but games ported from pc or from ps3 are always good!
Well, so long the PC version comes out in Jan/Feb in 09, that's fine by me. Matter of fact, I'll probably pick it up for console a year later too, if it's different enough.
lol, I always find console/pc arguments funny. The truth is pcs are much more powerful and better looking than any console. However, in order to get a real game-worthy pc you must spend at least 12 hundred and that's for the mid-low end of the spectrum. My xbox with all of its games added together doesn't even come close to that much. So the whole argument is irrelevant because you get what you pay for, end of story. As for dragon age, I for one would prefer it on the pc, not for the better graphics, but because the mouse and keyboard are my preferred controller for this type of game. Plus, the pc version will be about 10 dollars cheaper.
"Do you honestly think they'd only design a game for an elite range of PCs? I doubt it." You don't need an elite pc for a game like this to be vastly superior to the console version. And as for consoles being more powerful, lol. Yes, the general joe dumbpack, maybe. The average gamers? no way.
PC is superior to consoles if you have the hardware to back it up. If you have a store bought computer and don't know what components you have, then you should buy it for the console. PC versions are almost always better, though. Better controls, better graphics, and better support. It's a simple fact.
"Baldur's Gate successor on console? Why make it for pathetically inferior platforms, when you can get epic game for PC?" Do you honestly think they'd only design a game for an elite range of PCs? I doubt it.
mlp071: Current-gen consoles are actually more powerful than the computers owned by most of the general public. This makes business sense, it allows Bioware to sell their products to a much larger market. Definately looking forward to playing this on my 360
Baldur's Gate successor on console? Why make it for pathetically inferior platforms, when you can get epic game for PC? Is it going to be with mind numbingly simplistic and boring sidequests like ME or with limited conversation ability as in Assassin's Creed? No way that can have any decent AI(if any), at least not on console. I guess i will pass on that.
Valen_Ca Posted Oct 16, 2008 5:36 pm PT So is Bioware handling the port to the PS3 or is EA farming that one out? ___ I asked and got a big fat "no comment."
thorsen-ink:: Baldur's gate is set in the D&D universe. Atari owns the D&D license. ============================ Then if Atari can spare the money, it needs to release one.
The more RPGs the better I say. And since it is developed by Bioware, I'm even more interested! Glad to see consoles are getting some love.
