Sony's John Koller says company is not concerned with handheld's performance, staggered postlaunch support key.
The PlayStation Vita posted big numbers upon its December 17 launch in Japan, with Media Create reporting that nearly 325,000 units made it to gamers in its first week of availability. However, that number fell off substantially into its second week, with the console selling about 72,500 units according to Media Create, and just under 43,000 units by week three.
On the surface, that downward trend doesn't appear to bode well for Sony's latest handheld device. However, speaking to GameSpot at CES 2012, Sony director of hardware marketing John Koller said that PS Vita sales in Japan aren't a concern for the company.
"If you look at the word-of-mouth factor, it's really strong because people are bringing it home and really enjoying it," he said. "That satisfaction rate is really high. But also in terms of when we funnel in additional hardware units, that'll dictate how many sales there are and how many sell through.
"We're still in the first couple weeks, and we're trying to get as many units into market as possible. We're going to give it some time, but overall those numbers have been to forecast," he continued.
Koller also addressed Sony's game plan for software releases on the PS Vita. Alluding to the 3DS's dearth of new games following its launch, Koller said that Sony plans to mete out big-name titles for the PS Vita on a consistent basis in the months ahead.
"What we really wanted to do, and I think we learned from past, most recent, handheld device launches, is that you don't want to launch strongly and then go dark for three or four months and have nothing…So in subsequent months for Vita, we have launch, then we have MLB, then we got Mortal Kombat, then Resistance, then Little Big Planet, then Call of Duty, and Assassin's Creed."

Ok now the vita sold 510993 units in japan. Not too bad but wait until it launches to the whole world it will break a million.Japan is small to the whole world you know.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yii9BZRNJo&feature=related Watch this, there are some problems with the remote play............:S I am PsVita fan, but with these problems I think It is not worth the money...I would like to hear a drop price very soon, the shipping and the taxes in my country are expensive.....
@Lykanthropie well I can only think of a few actual ports and there is more new stuff then just shooter sequels on it anyways it is a launch line up of course there are going to be ports and sequels of known franchise on it it is like that at every launch of a new system you need well known franchises on it to help to sell the system
@shadowhunter0 maybe we are not talking about the same games, there are new gamesm but there are also a lot of ports, and the new suff consist of shooter sequels. its a bit lame, but for people just playin shooters might work.
@Lykanthropie you are still not getting it THEY AREN'T PORTS a port has the same lvls/Story and maybe couple of extra features these have BRAND NEW LVLS and STORY and allot of new features and by the way most of them aren't useless granted there will be some games that are ports but not has many has you think
@shadowhunter0 some graphics may change, and some new more or less useless features and content, thats a port with new stuff like the difference between street fighter and super street fighter, but be happy with it, if you like it.
One thing that disrupts my interests in early purchase is the later upgrades and bonuses that's obviously going to come to buyer later on after it's debut over here... I want it most to complete the PS games I downloaded, skype, and music.
if it had a better list of games at launch it would probably sell a lot better. but gamespots little prediction of bringing the price down to $199 with a free game would be great. I said I would buy it once FFX comes out but if that happens I'm not sure I could wait.
@Sigil-otaku You got down voted more than I did haha. I don't own a 360 yet, I do have forza 4 collectors edition though. The reason why PS3 has a better lineup is because the Playstation brand has had a huge foothold on gaming since the early 90's. The original Xbox came out around 2000 so Sony has Microsoft cold.
@BB_Thrilla Did you hear me.4 cores. And if don't like my comment bb thrilla you can go **** yourself.
Oh god this thing is more powerful than my computer. This thing is like 4 cores. It has awesome screen 5 oled touch screen.Six axis motion sensor.3g and wifi.As much as powerful as the ps3.Has awesome games.Touch from the back of it.Remote play with the ps3.Two analog sticks.Front and back camera. And lots of other things. This thing is like the best gaming device and better then all of these tablets.
Going to just wait for the price drop and the addition of emulators. I think the newer games are over rated to play plus you won't be able to finish them due to battery life...
@Lykanthropie they still aren't ports they have their own lvls and stories along with new features what they actually are a NEW games in the franchise/series
@shadowhunter0 ok ports with some new features ... there are aslo final fantasy, persona. ninja gaiden, metal gear, Marvel vs. Capcom, Disgaea and a lot more ... the vita only have the same franchises as the ps3, the looser of this Console Gen, and i am sure the ps3 games have better quality and most games wont be longer then 5-6 hours or even less. I would never buy a csystem for games like uncharted, restistance or killzone, just as i never would buy a xbox for gears of war or halo.
@monson21502 WOW glare... You know it also does 100 other things too, right? Every system have there flaws, but this isn't really a big problem now is it... Cause from what I heard people who actually got there hands on it love it. Also on IGN they let people on the street try it out and I didn't see anyone complaining about glare...
For all of you people waiting to see if this thing is going to do well just get it if you buy the hardware if more people buy it more good games will come out on this thing. Sony drop the price of the momory sticks 32 gb needs to be $50-60 and 74 needs to be $100 or less maby drop it to 200. 3rd party people sony needs your help to, get as many of your games on here as possible and it will sell like crazy.
4 core processor on the vita , the ipad2 had a 2 core processor and it was as fast as my computer on all websites its a bit smaller but i think it will be able to run them just as fast if not faster
For the consol goers the vitas looking good great launch line up and great games following it even bioshock infinit is coming to it. and if its a let down atleast it will replace my computer.
There are few good games that are long on smartphones and half of those get boring after a few hours and those select few games are normaly remaid for consols for the same price and with the vita youll be able to pick them up with the same mechanics. dont belive me check out plastation minis youll find your favorites
Hey all the people playing smartphone games tryout the vita, games are better prices the same only bad part is the momery card. Yes I know the games are cheaper on smartphones but for one 99% percent of these games are just awful i dont know how you could possibly play these, you call these games these wouldnt even be good 20 years ago, two, the only good games last a couple of hours like infinity blade. The only good games have better longer versions on counsols or on the vita.
@monson21502 it does'nt reflect to bad in the flesh think its just on camera that it reflects alot. Also you talked about buying a ps3 an xbox or a wii U. Most people considering buying a Vita have a ps3 or an xbox, I dont think the wii U going to do so well after what happened wii the 3ds and the wii. Also people wanting to buy an ipad for gaming are retarted cause how many good solid game are on there that arnt infinity blade, and angry birds is not a good game. also people willing to pay $400-$900 sould be willing to serrender $250-300 plus the price of a memory stick for some good games.
@monson21502 its not I have played it in the sun light with now problem at all there is a small glare what device doesn't have a glare when the sun is shinning on it which is easy to get rid off by sitting in a different direction where the sun isn't shinning on the screen
heard its really hard to see the screen in the sun light..... so for 300 bucks your better off to get a ps3 or a wii u or a 360 or maybe add a few more bucks for a ipad 2 when the ipad 3 comes out. sony is in real trouble with ps vita imo...
@MrKyleKatarn System is barely out, selling bad (proportionally, not necessarily overall though) and has no real need for so much praise. It's seemingly a good system but praising it with overly positive rhetoric just isn't good in a stage where it's incredibly expensive (games more expensive, system more expensive, mem cards not included and more expensive) just sounds like people need to take a step back and concentrate on the games. It's yet to prove itself in this area and that is ultimately what gaming is about. I think it looks like a real solid bit of hardware but ultimately that doesn't change much, I have a 360 that isn't bad hardware either but I don't barely play it due to sparse exclusive lineup and people get tired of overly praising rhetoric when there's little reason. It's just fanboy drivel, I don't mind people liking a system but come on, it's not worth pretending it's already worth buying the system and everything in the world is beautiful just yet. Also, look at the two posts just below yours. Downvoted much? Not at all.
Honestly im not sure how the vita will do. I wonder if it will have the same struggle as the 3DS. The lineup is pretty good better then the 3DS at launch but with the high price of the system PLUS needing a high priced memory card (why didnt they just go with lower cost options) might drive people not to get it right away. I decided to just use the same money and get a PS3 right now enjoy the exclusives on it and then see how the vita does over the next few months and if sony lowers the price.
@donmega1 Yeah but supposing you wanted to play a Nintendo game? Or something of Sony's? I think your little viewpoint is a tad skewed, as far as Microsoft exclusives go I'd rather play something else.
Sony marketing strategy is horrible. Only 1 month from European release and i saw zero comerciais anywhere, same from Vodafone. Sony is doing it all wrong. Im NO fanboy. I just recently bought my 1st console ever. I chosen PS3 after some research and that is one of the main reasons I'm writing here. I read alot of the comments bellow, some were right, some were wrong and alot were just repeated spam. Nintendo won the handheld gaming war. Its a fact. The numbers shows it. Sony should concentrate in the upcoming PS4 and a way of Remotely Play games from it from anywhere, something like OnLive. Nowadays ISPs download/upload speeds are kinda good anywhere and with the upcoming 4G is even getting better. Focus on Remote Playing. Make a cheap Handheld with a good resolution screen (at least SD 576p resolution, since all PS3 games support it) , enought RAM for basic multimedia applications, all the buttons (including L2, R2, L3 and R3) and off course WiFi and 4G connectivity. No need for touch screens, Gps, and all the "weird" stuff. Just make an handhelp that is basically a slimmed Dualshock 3 controller with a screen and remote connectivity. Focus on that and for sure almost everyone that owns a PS3 and PS4 will buy it. Hell, it might even boost PS3 and 4 sales. PS: Sorry my english and i'm no engineer, so please be gentle. This is just my thoughts.
with such a high price tag they shoulda gave it another name.... hand helds sell alot because of parents getting it for their kids. since both nintendo and sony have made so many skus with its ds and psp parents are gonna think they are buying almost the same thing instead of a next gen system.i cant tell you how many people i heard say wow the new ds is 250 they must be crazy!! im pretty sure the ps vita is gonna get the same response....
not getting this till its 70 to 100 bucks cheaper. buy then there might be some more good games out to boot.and the good launch games will be on sale or might even come with the system in a bundle. i think it be foolish to rush out and buy a ps vita right away. specialy since the 3ds lowered its price so soon after its launch. and people can get a 3ds plus a game for 169. its gonna be really hard for sony to sell them here in the states at 250 to 300 bucks with no games with it... i mean for that price u can get a wii u, ps3, 360 or a wii. i just dont see how sony think this is gonna sell
Japanese sales do not speak for US sales, glad somebody understands this. The Vita is a beautiful device and with awesome launch titles like Uncharted and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, sales for this will be quite nice.
I won't be getting Vita at launch so that I can actually focus on studies, but I'll definitely get it by April or May. Hopefully give them some time to work over any bugs it has too...
@donmega1 Arrogance like that is what is really going to kill gaming and lead to tablets and phones downfall.
@Halloll Did you ever think that some of us have already played the system; even at E3 2011 and the system definately deserves the hype. It's amazing!
@hella_epic : While I know what you mean, graphics don't sell systems though....more so than not,the systems with the most powerful graphics don't sell as well...for AT LEAST the past 2 generations (and 1 and actually only so far portable generation) of consoles the weakest (graphically) systems lead the pack while the most/more powerful ones trailed behind if not in dead last.To me at least I don't know of any reason (besides graphics which,as we have learned, don't sell systems) why the Vita has any significant advantage..if you look at the psp list of titles it has an even more major hardcore lineup than Vita will even dream of having (no offense to the system..but the psp lineup was excellent)..it had god of War,Mortal Kombat,Resistance,Little Big Planet,GTA,Monster Hunter and much more..whether it be that 'hardcore' titles just aren't able to fit into a portable mold or whatever the case may be..I think Sony is going to have to do more (not sure what but still 'more') than announce (for the most part) franchises that were on psp to surpass the competition.
When the windows 8 tablet comes out with Xbox controller compatibility and Xbox exclusive games like on their phones, every hand held system will die...
"So in subsequent months for Vita, we have launch, then we have MLB, then we got Mortal Kombat, then Resistance, then Little Big Planet, then Call of Duty, and Assassin's Creed" Sold.
