Prototype 2, SSX: Deadly Descents, Insane confirmed at VGAs, Forza 4 due fall 2011
Ceremony sees Activision sequel, EA snowboard game's existence, Guillermo del Toro games locked down; Kratos playable in PS3 Mortal Kombat.
Tonight's VGAs wasted no time in confirming one game rumored to be revealed at the awards ceremony: SSX: Deadly Descents. During the opening montage for the show, the game's title was briefly flashed, several weeks after a nearly identical Web URL was registered.
A trailer that premiered later in the broadcast confirmed rumors that the game will be set in the most extreme mountain ranges on the planet, with a high danger element to gameplay. In fact, it will be the first game to use real-life mountain ranges as its basis, according to publisher EA Sports.
In SSX: Deadly Descents' trailer, the main character drops in from a helicopter to a flare-lit snowboard run at night, only to veer off the trail. He then pops out the wings of a flying squirrel wingsuit as he careens over the edge, apparently confirming more rumors the game will feature pastimes other than alpine sports.
Also confirmed at the event was Prototype 2, the sequel to Activision and Radical Entertainment's 2009's open-world adventure. Set for release in 2012 for unspecified platforms, the game will concern Sgt. James Heller, an ex-soldier tasked with taking down the protagonist of the original game, Alex Mercer. No platforms for the title were revealed.
Film director Guillermo del Toro was also on hand to unveil his new game, inSANE. In development at Red Faction-maker Volition studios and publisher THQ, the game will reportedly be a tie-in with his next film and is apparently an action-role-playing game with horror elements inspired by Call of Cthulhu author H.P. Lovecraft.
The evening's ceremony also featured a live action trailer for the Kinect-compatible Forza Motorsport 4, which was dated for fall 2011. Additionally, the broadcast featured the unveiling of Elder Scrolls V and Mass Effect 3, as well as the dating of Resistance 3 and Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. Last, but in the estimation of many fighting-game fans, not least, the event revealed that God of War protagonist Kratos will be a playable character in the PlayStation 3 edition of the upcoming Mortal Kombat game.
