First image for Obsidian's PC role-playing game depicts lush environment; company says tech advancements will allow for greater detail.
Obsidian Entertainment has released the first screenshot (below) for its Kickstarter-funded isometric PC role-playing game currently titled Project Eternity.
The image depicts a lush environment, complete with a basic campsite, a waterfall, and what appears to be an entrance to a dungeon.
According to Obsidian, though Project Eternity is being designed like its previous Infinity Engine games, the company now has more advanced rendering packages to leverage. The developer says this will allow the studio to create more realistic trees and grass, which appear in the screenshot.
The Kickstarter campaign for Project Eternity ends in four days on October 16. It has rocketed past its original $1.1 million funding target, landing close to $2.8 million from about 58,000 backers as of press time.
I can´t imagine that this is actually where my characters will be moving. Amazing. I guess I relive the feelings I had when I played Baldurs Gate 1 for the first time.
3 million dollar mark achieved! Wow, thats impressive...hope these guys take a looong time to develop this, and make an RPG worthy of Fallout, BG and Planescape...
Became a backer today. I placed myself in the $80 tier. I'm an old schooler that loved NWN, BG, and just about the RPG's of an old era. I'm glad someone is trying to revitalize the look! Please please support this game!
For those that keep saying this is looks like 2d concept art, it is because every area in this game is hand painted 2d scene. I know alot of you younger gamers dont know what that looks like anymore lol. They actually explain in one of their updates, they create a scene in 3d, covert it to 2d, then paint it by hand.
@Narsos I think they just "touch up the pre-rendered image in photoshop (or similar program) not hand paint it, that'd make the 3d model and rendering a bit of a time waste.
Still I love the look this creates, and with the better 2d & 3d tools they can really take it to another level.
Looking forward to this after playing some of the classics like The Icewind Dale Ultimate Collection and the patched to greatness Fallout New Vegas etc.
@Hellbishop which patch for fallout new vegas please? im thinking of playing thru it again after i witnessed the glory of fallout3 modded :)
I dont why but that ss reminded me the final game of black isles "lionheart".. I hope they got their lesson so the history will not repeat itself..
Really hyped for this game. However, it is uncertain if it will include rats...check out Matt Chat's interview with Josh Sawyer for more details:
it's just beautiful. glad to see isometric RPG coming out in this time and age. i love them. fallout 1,2 and baldur's gate are timeless classic
Hopefully it's as good as the auspicious project name promises, as if we could hope for a relevant and present adaptation of modular/random elements from professional game developers...Why that must be I am not sure, why it is I disdain.
How i miss something like Minsc and boo in a game...I can get all the characters made in the last five years, put them together...and even then it wouldn´t be equivalent to Minsc and boo Ç_Ç
This is fantastic!!!! i realise that kickstarter projects may not appeal to everyone, but for the 30 year old gamer who craves point and click adventures and old skool rpg's...... this is awesome... with the new tech available, hopefully it will appeal to the younger gamer too.
If u look closely @ the full-size view of the image, u can tell this is no screenshot. Look where the waterfall hits the rocks and the resting water. Concept art (and beautiful) sure but don't mislead us into thinking thinking the actual graphics look this good already. Even if they do or will, however, I personally couldn't give a shiz; most of their games play like crap.
For a game that just started development a couple weeks ago, that's amazingly good.
Also for the record I see people comparing this to Skyrim and Diablo. This is going to be far closer to Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter Nights. The only modern example I can think of is Dragon Age: Origins on the PC (when zoomed all the way out, turned into a good isometric RPG).
@Rat_King From what I hear, it will be distributed on Steam, and a DRM free version will be released on GOG
@Rat_King A quote from the FAQ on Obsidian's website:
"Once the Kickstarter ends, every backer will receive a survey asking them what platform and distribution network they would like. We now proudly support both GOG and Steam, so if you prefer DRM-free, you can choose the GOG option, and if you like Steam's integration, including achievements, and possibly cloud saves, you'll be able to choose that as well."
I pledged $25. I plan on upping that to $165 at the last minute ;)
I can't wait to play this!
I made an infinity engine/isometric RPG bucket list to play through before the game comes out. Have to relive old memories, and then make new ones.
It hit 2.8 Million! The game is going to just get better and better, especially since they don't have someone to make them rush it like KOTOR 2.
I'm gonna keep watching this and see how it develops. Just out of curiosity, what will happen with the extra $1.7 million they received. Will that affect the price of the game and DLC?
@shopsD They add new stuff into the game. More money means more in game features. They detail it out here:

@percuvius2 lol PC elitist looking down on console gamers...get over yourselves.
Its not our fault we HAVE TO look down when talking to yuo guys, i was always taught to look at who im talking to! :O :P
@leviathanwing Well said sir. I actually admire good PC games. @Ocellicyst Well was that elitist statement above needed? I came here to read about the game, and see what PC players have to say about it...only to come across a PC fanboy...I thought you guys were so elite that you were above that?
I guess you're just as petty as the console gamers you look down on.
@Ocellicyst is that irony i hear in your tone and reply? what is up with the whole pc user hating consoles anyways? you got yours and they got theirs... but its always pc gamers who feel the need to thumb their noses at anything else that isnt in their realm... uncharted sucks because it isnt on pcs for instance. thats total bs... you dont see a large swath of console gamers saying baldurs gate blows because it wasnt on consoles. if anything they reveal their envy at not being able to play it... and are happy to receive the game if/when they can.
