Valve marketing head says details on add-on content for top-rated first-person puzzler coming before the week is out.
Valve wasn't stingy with add-on content for Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2, and that strategy will apparently continue with its latest title, Portal 2. As part of an interview with the online edition of business-oriented magazine Fast Company, Valve marketing director Doug Lombardi confirmed that downloadable content will be available for the first-person puzzler beginning this summer.
"We will be announcing some DLC for it, so folks can keep a look out for more content coming this summer," Lombardi said. "We'll be putting more details out about that in a week or so. We'll support that with more videos or more comics." Lombardi told GameSpot that the announcement should arrive "before this week is over."
Released to critical acclaim for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC last week, Portal 2 is the continuation of 2007 Orange Box pack-in Portal. The new title continues the travails of human lab rat Chell, who in the original game used a portal gun to create interdimensional openings on ceilings, walls, and floors in an effort to escape the Aperture Science labs and thwart the diabolical artificial intelligence known as GLaDOS.
In addition to extending the amount of content in the single-player mode, Valve introduced a new multiplayer cooperative mode. In it, players take control of two robots, named Atlas and P-body, and work together to tackle their own set of portal-related problems.

Just so everyone knows, the ps3 version of the game comes with a code for the pc version on steam. So basically when you buy it for the ps3 you get two portal 2's instead of one. Also, you can sell your pc version to er buddy and still play with them while on ps3 cause the ps3 version has steam on it. Yeah, PS3 owners get pimped out with their version.
Awesome! It's a great game. I was hoping for more stand-alone test chambers, or one climactic test chamber with every single element involved, from the paint to the lasers and light bridges.

@Martyr_of_Wrath, Ah nice one. I just asked cos I'd have bought it for you if you wanted it on PC, nobody who wants Portal 2 should miss out on it! $40 isnt bad at all, its still £38 here ($64). You enjoying it so far?
@d12dotcom I would, and have, got it on the PS3. Turns out that Gamestop is having a $20 dollar off sale on Portal 2, so i only had to pay $40 for it, which means I had to work a little to get the money. Promotion goes till 5/5/2011 if you're interested, or anyone else.
oh and by the way, it is justified, for PC gamers to get free DLC, cause get that, while console players also get DLCs and the PC players don't, and the console players even have to pay for them, but anyway I really want this to be free or atleast cheap, cause if this is all the information, then the DLC will only contain more maps for CO-OP :D
it should be free for everyone, or everyone should pay for it. I hate how PC gets free DLC. It is unjustified.
@Mardinn: Actually Valve is quite confident they have found a loophole to get around the DLC charge. MS is greedy and won't allow free DLC on the marketplace, however, including the DLC in a Title Update would theoretically allow them to go around that barrier and distribute the DLC content for free.

I completely hate myself for not getting Portal 2 enough already, now I hears about this DLC, and I'm even more sad panda now. The reason is I plan to get Brink first day because I put down a full pre-order on it, and it just looks that beast. Why does the world tempt you with great things when you have the least amount of money? I hope they have another hilariously awesome ending song like in the original.
I still need to pick this up... since I will get the 360 version I am certain I will need to pay, there again I don't mind paying for DLC from such a well respected company like Valve ;)
Big question: Will Valve make us pay for it, or will it be free like Left4Dead DLC? It'll be interesting to see.
I kinda hope they add something to the main story too and not just focus on coop, maybe add in the single player challenge rooms.
On a Per hour bases I really enjoyed Portal a lot more then either fallout 3 or Oblivion, they were both great games, but neither the dialog or the gameplay was as fun. Purely a personal preference though. ( I found the areas through the oblivion gates very samey and dull - but I wanted more of the plants for my potions - and too complete the story ofcourse :p )
Damn GS. Lost 90% of my post. I've seen a few custom made single player maps and one co-op with 10 levels. Playing the map requires accessing the "console" on the PC as the P2 menu doesn't support them yet. The readme.txt that comes with the maps explains how to do it. Anyone on the forum there should be able to help you. Going to check them out myself tonight.
@AncientDozer As it turns out, there's about 200 people across my Steam groups who have completion achievements that were obtained around the same time as me or before; so no, I'm not alone or a legendary gamer. The puzzles honestly weren't challenging, I've had more difficulty with Professor Layton games. I realize the game isn't all about the puzzling, and that it has a wonderful atmosphere, it's all about immersion, yaddy yaddy yadda. But what are you supposed to do when you know how to beat the level? Marvel at the bump-mapping on the wall? Look at more foliage and broken glass and admire it? I did have fun playing it, I'm just saddened that it was over so fast. I never said Portal 2 is a bad game- I love it. I just think this DLC can't come fast enough. I know comparing games to unrelated games is like beating a dead horse; but I feel I got my moneys worth from Oblivion. Or the Fallout series. I have countless hours invested into Garry's Mod, and that was a $10 game. I didn't have any more or less fun playing those than I did playing Portal 2. I just think with a $30 price tag, the reviews it's getting would be more justified.
I can't wait for my free DLC on PC. Too bad sony and microsoft will make the console owners pay for it.
Well, I'm trading it in now while the value is still high. By the time the DLC is out it will probably be less than $20 to buy again.
@AncientDozer bump! I would actually linger on some of the puzzles to hear everything gladdos, wheatley and cave johnson had to say about them. I mean, hell, how could I focus on solving puzzles during the middle of Cave Johnson's "Lemon" monologue? "I'm going to get my engineers to make a combustible lemon that BURNS YOUR HOUSE DOWN!"
I think this is one of the only games that can successfully integrate DLC into an established, coherent universe. Given the scale of Aperture, it shouldn't be hard to find all kinds of fun uses for deadly neurotoxin. Also, I want more goo puzzles. Those were so much fun, especially when you had to manage all three types of goo.
@theMirrorsTruth As it turns out? You're the legendary gamer and everyone else is not at your level. It's shocking, I realize, but there are actually people out there, and by that I mean a lot of, who were unable to breeze through it in two hours. Funnier still, people were too busy having fun to be fettered by such thoughts as how long they beat it. Silly notion, I realize.
I can't wait to see what they'll do because there's still so much more potential. I'd like to suggest a level editor.
I'm really confused about the raving reviews for Portal 2. Sure, it's an awesome concept, it's executed terrifically, and the hiccups were almost non-existent; but why is hardly anyone mentioning how short the game is? I breezed through the single player in a few hours, and the co-op even quicker, all on launch day. For $50, I felt a little ripped off, giving me about $10/hr game play. I'm hoping this DLC takes more than a lunch break to complete, and I'm still praying for user-created content.
@Ellanier Your post is proof that people on this site will thumbs down an intelligent response. Many people are ignorant enough to believe that if a game is released on May 5th, then the developer is working on the game until May 4 11:59 PM. I agree completely with your post.
It's also not DLC if it's completely free. Steam automatically updates the game for you, so you don't go and 'download' it. The service does that for you.
Well, all the L4D extra content came free. I can appreciate they have a business to run but hopefully this DLC will be free as well.
It was not released to 'critical acclaim.' No one said the game sucked enough to make a debate about it (besides those losers who were so butthurt over the skins for the multiplayer characters). Those people don't count though, since they're not real people.
I don't understand the problem with day one DLC. A game goes gold a few months before it is actually released. For example, Halo Reach went gold, aka finished completely, and all they have to do is ship out discs, sometime in late June, but released in September. Developers have a good window of 3 months to make some cool stuff, and no doubt they will release it. It's not like they are releasing content that is already on the disc, it's usually just quick additions that they decided could work after they shipped the game out. Plus, you don't even have to buy the DLC, so stop complaining.
