'PlayStation Phone' hits US on May 26 for $200

Looks like a fun phone to me for 200 sounds like a good deal. 3G,WiFi 2.4 GHz, Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) for apps like Anger Bird. Hear the battery life and speakers are really good. USB port - so I assume you can charge it like that to. A keyboard would be nice.I can do without a camera on a phone thought, have never been a fan of that.

@dinslacck that's 200 with contract. I paid the same for my phone and it cost 500 without contract. sooo yeah... NGP for 200 thats wishful thinking. the first psp release for 250 i believe, so.... NGP for 200? S0ny will have to pull something out of their @ss for that to happen.

@mariokart64fan You do realize this is a phone, right? As in, a cell phone? Those kind of require a monthly bill. I don't see why this is so shocking to you, haha.

@helios_k I'm not asking it to make me a bagel (there's a reference to PS1 advertisements for ya). I don't think adding phone functionality to the NGP would make it bloated, I think that would make it - perfect.

@rohn13 Well technically they're a joint company. I was never aware of Sony ever being the parent, although seeing as they're both so close together it make sense for Sony to borrow Ericsson for a new product campaign.

HerroYuy0905: Is it really? Sorry, not very "phone smart". I just figured it was its own thing. A couple of my friends have iPhones or Androids, and they just didn't appeal to me very much.

Who would've thought Ericsson and Sony would collab together. It's hardly any different to an ordinary Xperia X10. The design of the minipad is all that depicts Sony's investment.

In my opinion, the iPhone and Android are very overrated. The Xperia Play might be my new phone.

200$ in the US??? in portugal the launch price is 500euros (more than 700$)... i feel we are getting ripped off...

That thing is already obsolete before it even comes out, I mean considering it's PSP Go styling, I don't see it really doing much because I have my psp for that and have skype on it, free calls. Maybe they're already working on an updated version?

Wow, the specs for the Xperia Play are sort of old. 1GHz Scorpion CPU, Adreno 205 246MHz GPU, 512MB Ram and 480 x 854p resolution. The Motorola Atrix (which is like 3 months older than the Xperia Play) has a dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 CPU, ULP GeForce 400MHz GPU, 1GB Ram and 540 x 960p resolution. I really want the Xperia Play but I had a pretty bad experience with the Xperia X10a, and the Play has too old specs for me. I'm either gonna go with the Xperia Arc or the next PS Phone that comes out.

@white_wind It's $200 on a 2-3 year plan. In Canada it's $99 on a 3 year plan. Gamespot screwed up this article.

@BudgetMonkey82 Yes yes I know about that, especially the girlfriend part :).. Yes, I am referring to a somewhat-too-much functionality... Resources should never be divided if one of the purposes it is for is gaming. It only makes it more 'future-proof' won't it?

@helios_k I don't understand exactly what you mean by bloated, does that mean too much functionality? Think about it; if you had one device that you could carry around with you that would make phone calls, take photos / video, play MP3, play casual games and would also let you play BFBC2 while your girlfriend watches Come Dine With Me then you are on to a winner in my opinion. For the record, I have had a shot of the Xperia Play, it's a nice phone but I would rather stick with my HTC Desire.

posted this before, but still bitter about it, 200$ for the US consumers and 800$ for the rest... why the heck is that? I know people could just import, but still. and 200$ is too cheap for any phone actually.

Selling here (in Malaysia) about a month already. Cost about RM 1800 = $ 600 US. The library for psone games for it is rather thin right now.

My phone contract doesn't expire until next year so I will have to wait for something newer lol.

I was very excited about this device, but it's disappointing for me that this is actually a new Sony platform, I wanted a PSP phone, meaning a PSP with its awesome library of games with an added phone, but it will have its own library. It looks like a great device anyway, but I will pass on this and see what happens with the PSP2 (hopefully it will have retro compatibility).

I've actually just got an Xperia Play, it was released a bit earlier here in the UK. I've not had much of a chance to play around with it yet, but it's a nice little piece of kit. If anything lets it down, it's the somewhat chaotic organisation of buying games, but that's largely due to Android. As for whether this news 'belongs' on Gamespot, it's a Playstation branded device that has its own dedicated games on top of the usual Android fare, so I'd say yes. Mine came pre-loaded with Wipeout HD, FIFA'10, Sims 3 and Bruce Lee, none of which really fit in the 'casual' bracket- with the possible exception of Sims :)

I won't be getting it, but at least the service provider is verizon and not at&t.

A cell phone's priority will always be the phone functionality. Because of that, gaming will always be secondary on phones, and that's fine. That's the whole reason why this isn't branded as a Playstation device, because it's not primarily a gaming platform. If you love casual cell phone games, you might like this, but I think the majority of cell phone users would rather have a keyboard instead of a couple of face buttons (and the interface on this phone can't hold a candle to the interface on the PSP2). The architecture is pretty standard smartphone stuff, certainly not the custom gaming hardware that the PSP2 contains, so while it's certainly powerful enough for casual gaming, it's not going to compete with any of the dedicated gaming portables. Kind of makes this phone an odd proposition... it's certainly not as expensive as some phones, but it also lacks a keyboard and isn't even the fastest phone on the market at this point.

The sorta person who would buy this has all the games at home anyway, and if theyre away from home theyre probably at work or travelling and dont have the time to play a "proper" game anyway. Leave the proper games at home and play the stupid, casual, fun games when out and about. Trying to mix the 2 sounds like a waste of time, I'm never gonna play it when I have an xbox, ps3, pc, wii, gf in front of me. Yes the gf was last, but dont tell her that :)

I would love the phone but it has last years specs in it. If I could get this phone but with the EVO 3D specs or similar I would be all over it.

wow i want that phone. sex they should make it so it logs to the ps3 like my psp does. so i can watch content from that. that would be sweet.
