PlayStation Games & Apps Challenge Asia starting this June

Entries for PS3 and PS Vita categories to be submitted by July; grand prize worth $5,000.

Sony Computer Entertainment Asia has announced that it will be hosting PlayStation Games & Apps Challenge 2012, an event for aspiring game developers residing in the Asia Pacific region.

Contestants will need to pitch ideas and build a prototype for an app, PS3 or PlayStation Vita game. The two best entries in the Vita category will each win $5,000, while the five honorable mentions will take home $500.

The four best entries in the PlayStation 3 category will each receive $1,000 and be invited to the Asia PlayStation awards ceremony which is due to be held in mid-December this year.

Applicants will be able to submit entries in July. Further details and rules of the event will be available on the official website from June.

I think a playlist app would be great, it was easy enough on the PSP. It would be nice to use MediaGo also.

I guess a Youtube App and possibly a Messenger app

Also, just personally, I don't think its the size of the prize that matters, to be able to even get a honourable mention is pretty good to get in your work experience

 @mastergundam I don`t think japanese people are that good at creating things. They are really good at refining and perfecting ideas from other nations. From their writting to their religion almost everything is imported from other countries, and if you take a look at the japanese industries you will see that they are really struggling to keep competitive against Koreans (Samsumg, LG) and Apple. I believe that most of it is due to their lack of flexibility and lack of innovation. Take SONY for example, it hasn`t showed anything really relevant since the Trinitron television and that was quite some time ago.

 @mastergundam The father of the anime Osamu Tezuka used Disney as a referential for all of his works. Metal Gear, according to Kojima, has a massive influence from 007 and also I would never call Hideo Kojima a genius, he sure created a great franchise with charismatic and original characters but the scripts were really poorly written.

Japanese were really innovative people but Japan now faces serious problem because it`s industries are not changing in a satisfactory pace to keep up with the rest of the world and that is also the reason why Korea will surpass Japan in terms of GDP in 2017.

Sony is not an eastern company it is a global company with it`s root in Japan, and at the present time it`s global structure it is just a mess were the differents departments compete with each without share knowledge and increasing researching costs and I believe that all of that is due to a bad japanese administration.

About the countries I just mentioned Korea because it is now the biggest competitor with Japan.

 you was just talking about a small part (Sony) but not a whole picture (industry) yhere. I agree japanese are masters of perfecting things; however, they are also masters of creation, look at how their anime and manga market grow, Is there anyone out there in West could match up with them? Talking about genius, how about Hideo Kojima? did he master MGS franchise but not create it? no innovation? japanese make use of potential people in Asia, they are not the only ones working in the industry. I do know Korean invented many things before even Japanese cilvilization setled up. Have you also considered China,HK,Vietnam and other pacific countries? Well Sony is basically Eastern company, its not so weird for them to look for asians. Western potentials have already taken by MS or other western companies so no need to worry

Good to see Sony seeking new ideas. Prizes are a bit cheap though...

 

I hope some new and interesting IPs come out of this be it through huge AAA or fun SEN (or PSN if you prefer) titles.

These prizes are kind of insulting when you consider the amount of creative and technical work that goes into programming and game design. Hey we will give you pennies for your million dollar ideas. Where do I sign up for the using????????

I think it's great that Sony is encourage aspiring devs for new games. I think the rewards are a little stingy though. Surely the top price should at least cover reasonable salary (in man-hours) to develop the prototype. And why is the PS3 prize so much lower than the PSP prize? The top prize for the DOTA 2 tournament at Gamescom was $1M, and Valve's future did not hinge on the outcome.

I live in Pacific Asia with a few ideas, but i'm studying in the UK, so that's a no from me. Good luck to the competitors.

sony welcoming new ideas from people.. this is a win-win situation from both sony & the participants. through the contestant originality & creativity will lead to more unique & brand new IP that who knows, might end up being 1st party exclusives for sony's platform. with that at hand, the contestants gain cash prizes, possibly even more.

it's good Sony welcomes new ideas from people. what's not to love? more originality & innovation will lead to even more BRAND NEW IP. on the plus side, winners will receive a cash prize for there efforts.. who knows probably more!
