PlayStation 4 development 'under way' - Sony

I hope both new XBOX and Playstation consoles will get a decent amount of RAM and Video Memory. there are so many games that lags when loading new textures and other data during gameplay on the current platforms. And to prevent loading times, use SSD drives and give all games the option to be installed on the SSD.

probably not a million dollars but it maybe sold at $ 6,999 usd. I bought my EU version launch ps3 at 600 Euros and to this day I still feel the pinch so am not intersted in ps4 unless or until my ps3 is dead.

hopefully its not priced at 1 million dollars -_-

Many people don't realise the situation of others who say 'they've just bought a ps3'. Fair enough, PS4 may soon be with us, nothing wrong in that. But what p*** me off is those who have had the PS3 since launch, attack others who've just bought a PS3. How would YOU like it if you just bought a PS3 recently, and you learnt of a PS4 in 2 years time??? Think people think.

So long as they have an impressive game library, and something that makes it more distinct than the PS3, i'm hooked! (Sony surprise us. ahem ahem, Psone original remakes? please?)

I'm actually surprised that we're going to start seeing the next gen of consoles next year. In the past, 4-5 years seems typical, but game systems are different now. The internet lets the software update continuously and the hardware is powerful enough to run any sort of media and pretty impressive games. You know, ps2 is 99 is a ps2 now, minus a sorry internet addition. But the ps3 now is a completely different machine than when it came out. Look at Kinect and Move. Cheaper than a new console - totally new way to play your console Yes, I know that games could still look better - but can game budgets support the fine tuning required to make games look better than they already do. A high end game for ps3 costs anywhere from 20mil to 100 for gta IV. I'm not saying that I'm not intrigued, and I may end up biting my tongue, I just don't see why there's a race. Wii needs an update - not so sure about xbox and ps.

The rumours from last month were that Sony and Microsoft agreed to hold back their consoles until 2014, so we have a while until the next system if those rumours are true.

This is sweet news. I hope sony runs at its own pace again and doesnt worry about microsoft. Ms will rush their console out again to try to get a market share from early adopters and let them. One lesson we have learned is the early console breaks, this time round lets see how good peoples memories are. I hope sony takes its time and releases teh best platform of the next gen again. Already they are level this gen and thats even with the early release of teh xbox. As for nintendo, its a great console but not competing with sony for the same customers. So its not something to even consider in the program, though if they want to conpete on the move side of things i suppose there is a little competition there (not something im personally interested in) So nice to hear this good news!!

I'm going to wait at least a year after it's out until I buy it. Not only will it probably be full of problems in the beginning, but it may take a while to be loaded with great exclusives, like the PS3 did. So, I'm going to wait and stick with my PS3 just like I stuck with my PS2 before the system really hits its stride. I'm sure it will be a great console, but not on launch day. And I hope they don't change a THING about the controller.

lol @ people saying its too soon for the PS4. Have you played L.A. Noire on the PS3? If you drove fast enough you'll be driving alone in the street passing by buildings whose textures haven't even been rendered by the console yet. That's how much the hardware is lagging against games right now. Plus, they said it was still in R&D, probably not even in development part, just the research part. It'll be a good year or year and a half before they start talking about release dates.

I think PS3 still has more years to go its to early for ps4 . just let it at least 2 more years or 3

Not surprising, PS3 was in R&D Early in PS2's cycle. I remember hearing about the Cell processor back in 2002, and the PS2 was only what 2 years old then.

I can't believe these comments. People are throwing a HISSY FIT over A NEW CONSOLE? Really? I really need to explain two things: 1) The current console generation is running on 2006 hardware. TWO THOUSAND AND SIX. Five, even, if you take into account the 360's early launch and the Wii's budget construction. And that hardware was middle-of-the-road at the time, compared to PC's. We are very close to the ceiling, for developers, past which optimization simply won't be enough - console games aren't going to be able to keep up with PC visually much longer. There are consumer-level PC's that have up to THREE TIMES the computational power, by every possible measure, of any of the three consoles. They're not just getting outpaced, they're getting trounced. 2) The average console life cycle up to this point has been about 5-6 years. Pretty much every generational cycle - PS1 to PS2, GameCube to Wii, Saturn to Dreamcast - was about 5-6 years. It has BEEN 6 years, and they're only just BEGINNING TO ANNOUNCE their new consoles. There is no reason to say it's "too soon" - thanks to firmware updates and digital distribution, the big 3 manufacturers have managed to prolong their consoles' lives well past their ordinary length, and we consumers have waited longer than ever. In short, the Starcraft II Reveal Trailer said it best: "Hell, it's about time."

the first thing that sony and microsoft should do is to MAKE A GOOD COOLING SYSTEM! both current systems had a lot of overheating issues(the 360 is much worse) and they both had terrible failure rates especially on their launch systems, the second thing is to have high amount of system RAM and VRAM(which is one of the limiting facters on current gen) and most importantly THE GPU! they should atleast play games IN 1080P NATIVE RESOLUTION instead of sub-HD games, and they should use the fastest gpu they can get without cutting corners.

Didnt sony just the other day say this is false and after reading those comments where do they see PS4? I see a vague statement that dosent refer to next gen consoles at all.

not trying to sound like a turd here but what happened to sony not having to develop another console in the foreseeable future? with blu-ray and the overall performance of the ps3, they are still ahead of the competition. im pretty sure sony's ps3 will still be ahead of the next wii, sony just needs to flex its marketing muscle to keep the ps3 competitive, not waste millions of dollars on dev for another console already.

@mad-at-nintendo Too early? They only announced "development plans". Chances of seeing the thing in physical form on shelves before 2014 are scarce at best. It's smart to plan ahead. Also, compared to the last few generations, this one's one of the longest. The XBOX 360 is turning 6 this November, and there's no new successor for that announced just yet either, even though MS has mentioned working on one. But yeah, Nintendo NEEDS to get on the ball, 'since we're tired of playing a console with 2001-era graphics and extremely outdated online capabilities.

@ mad-at-Nintendo well Sony could do that but i don't think they would take the risk of Nintendo getting a large percent of the market for the next generation.

its too early for sony to make a console, the only reason nintendo is making an new console is because their hardware is incredibly outdated. no one will buy a ps4 or 720 or whatever if u can still play COD or Halo, that is where a large chunk of console purchases come from.sony should wait another 3 or 4 years.

nope sorry everyone. as confimed by kotaku today by sony the hardware they were referring to was the NGP not a PS4. as of right now they claim that they have nothing to report on a new PS4

Thanks for the free online and amazing games sony. If you need to charge me like 10 a year for security im down for it. With games like uncharted, god of war and infamous ill still support you. (Even if the hackers keep saying they'll keep attacking)

It will be official when the reward the contract to either AMD or Nvidia. MS and Nintendo have already awarded a contract with AMD so it's most likely will go to Nvidia. Either way Sony can't afford to allow MS to release then next gen console first this time, but they also can't lose too much money from selling consoles as well.

Wow ... I'm curious what kind of graphic PS4 will offer ... how much it will different from PS3 ... maybe 10 times more powerful than PS3 ...
