PlayStation 3 sells 70 million units worldwide

Sony reveals that 70 million PlayStation 3 consoles were sold to stores worldwide as of November 2012; PlayStation Move controller shifted 15 million units by November 11.
While 2012 saw Sony's game division suffering losses, the Japanese company marked a milestone this month by selling 70 million PlayStation 3 consoles worldwide. The 70 million figure refers to sell-in figures, which means units sold to retail outlets, rather than direct sales to the public. By contrast, Nintendo reported the Wii had sold 97.18 million units as of September 2012, while Microsoft announced the Xbox 360 had sold 70 million units by October 2012.
Sony also announced that its PlayStation 3 Move motion controller has surpassed 15 million sales worldwide since launching on September 15, 2010 in Europe. Sony claims that Move is now supported by more than 400 software titles as of this month, including Wonderbook: Book of Spells, which launched this week in North America and Europe.
Other statistics released by Sony today include the PlayStation Network now housing 170,000 pieces of downloadable content, including 57,000 pieces of game-specific content. On the software side, there are now 3,590 software titles available for PlayStation, with sales of those titles reaching more than 595 million units worldwide.

Color me green with envy, I live in Nebraska USA out in the middle of no man's land so I get very little options to choose from unfortunately so yeah your soo lucky!!!

2 Like @djenkov @Nickolaz666 Dont be lazy! I use my SNES, N64 and PS2 still with friends, people who complain about backwards compatibility is just a lame excuse and it makes no logic sense, use your brain before hand.

@richter_6 I want Shenmue 1 & 2 HD, and also the long-awaited Shenmue 3.
The HD versions would probably be lauched for PSN and Xbox Live. But, neverthless, it would be ironic to play Shenmue in a Sony's console, since PS2 killed Dreamcast.
1 Like 20 million of those consoles has the yellow light of death. I have one in my closet that has the YLOD and Sony wants $100 to repair it. I need to get rid of it.

Youtube has loads of video's and the system is a lot easier to take apart than an Xbox 360
@Supabul @Infinite_713 Easy to take appart? Absolutely not. I took appart a ton of systems before and this was by far one of the most difficult ones. It's not because it's actually hard to figure out, it's because the way the top of the console snaps to the bottom. Every time I had to open mine I cringed in fear of breaking the plastic casing or worse, the power and eject buttons.
@Dnaisinmybody i have taken apart 40gb and 80gb versions before, at 1st , it was difficult, but after several times of doing it, it becomes easy, but ps3 slim is more fragile and difficult to dissemble/assemble, i have just reapplied thermal paste.
@Supabul It wont be easy to fix yourself, the thing u think easy probably refers to reflow? reflow is just a temporary fix, it will spoil again after few weeks or few months confirm, send it to someone who can reball well.
@Supabul it is not a problem of done it better than anyone else, it is just a matter of luck, if u keep your ps3 in aircon room while playing, it should work fine most of the time.

Anyway, it seems like the sales race between PS3 and Xbox 360 is getting more and more even at the same time that we keep hearing about what the next-gen consoles will be like. I don't care who wins and either way people are going to bash the winner. If Xbox 360 wins, people will say that the RROD problems made them sell more. If PS3 wins, people will argue that Sony isn't really winning, because they're selling the consoles at a price that equals a loss for every unit.
A years gap.. and pretty much equal sales.
Says it all.
On a side note I'm starting to feel ready for next gen now?

uhh ok so sony basically sold like a billion ps3s this year plus a billion software downloads and a billion motion controllers with a billion add ons but errr uhhh somehow the ENTIRE effing gaming division lost $$??? how is that humanly possible and exactly what does their business model require in order to make $$?? every man woman and child must own 3 ps3s a piece plus a vita and a motion controller for each hand. Apple is the new Sony. good bye sony way too much R&D money on 3d televisions that nobody wants

The only way to discount yourself from fanboyism is to keep your opinions to yourself and just play whatever games you want on whatever console you please.

@jtthegame316 Actually, the fact that shops are still buying ps3s in stock means the ps3s must be still selling otherwise the shops in question would not need to order a batch on wholesale because they would have enough in stock already. Plus who cares if 360 sold 70 million, it came out long before the ps3 came out and took like 4 consoles or so to get rid of the rrod (and we still don't know if its gone yet), on the other hand sony done it in their 3rd model (the slimline) but today sony is catching up in sales despite being a year late (or maybe 2 can't remember). Also Before you try and get smart, the 60 gb was the launch model, then they launched the 40gb and 80 gb (which are the same just with different hdd so you can count both of them as the same model), and then they launched the slimline (their 3rd and last model also with different hdd's). Anyhow, iv had my ps3 slim for 2 years and no sign of ylod or disc read error yet. Runs as good as it always has.
@jtthegame316 oh and yes i like ps3 better than xbox 360, so anyone could say my comments biased. But if you bother to look at all the facts, its all there what i've said. End of the day, I am a pc gamer and always have been. Only reason I got a ps3 is to play online with friends since they are more gamepad console types of people. And I also notice most pc gamers who are like me and play a bit of console favour the ps3 over the xbox 360, so the fact that people with years of advancement in gaming technology choose to go for ps3, and only the minority for xbox 360 (mostly because of the halo franchise), that pretty much says that ps3 is the better console. You only have to compare FF XIII on the ps3 (which it was designed for) to the xbox 360 to realise ps3 is more advanced graphically. Ye maybe it does not load games as fast or whatever, but who cares about a couple of seconds extra load time when you get better quality gaming, I prefer quality over quantity
@Aaronp2k no pc gamers prefure pc's and hate on consoles no matter what the console i am sorry but you are just a playstation fan boy. i know fanboys when i see them. i have both consoles and if anything in most games the 360 has the edge on most games that are on both consoles. i think you need to see halo 4 i have not seen anything on ps 3 look as good as that. yes i like my uncharted to and that does look great but you ps 3 fanboys need to just enjoy your games and stop looking for every possible angle to get your digs in on the xbox. if half of you are the gamer you claim to be you would actually like both xbox and ps 3 because both have 90% the same games and bring good exclusives to the table. ps 3 uncharted, yakuza and god of war. and more. Xbox left 4 dead, alan wake, witcher 2, halo plus a ton of xbox live arcade exclusives.and more.

@Albaficas First of i have both xbox and ps 3 play the likes of uncharted as well as halo. secondly you are as lame as these figures for hating on games just because they are exclusive to another format. these figures are lame and the only reason they put them out there is that the 360 got to 70 million recently and they want to mislead people into thinking the ps 3 has reached the same milestone but it has not. these figures would be like snickers saying we sold 70 million bars today to shops but that don't mean 70 million were sold and eaten.
@Hurvl i was not saying sells decided which is best. also i would agree it is lame when they say they shipped x amount of copies because that does not mean they sold them. if sales decieded that the i phone would actually be a good phone but it is not it is a restirctive piece of garbage that people blinded by hype buy.

If sales dictated what was best, then PS2 would be all time best or the Wii for this generation. Also, CoD would be the best game every year, no matter what other games were released.
1 Like Seems like all three consoles have a large install base. Looks like is gen will be coming to a close soon though. The Wii U is out, Microsoft is rumored to be releasing their next system in 2013, and I have a feeling Sony won't wait too long to follow suit. I just hope they don't abandon support for the 360 and PS3. Or at least make em backward compatible,
@godzillavskong well most likely Sony will support the PS3 for another 3 years(They tend to have a ten year plan blah blah blah but who know since they didn't do as well as they thought they would this generation). Who knows about Xbox 360, hopefully for a couple years seeing as I just got one LOL. As for Nintendo I do not know either but I imagine at least a couple years
@godzillavskong and Im FINALLY picking up a PS3 on Black Friday so this is all just well wishing. Shoot im still picking up PS2 games that I never got to play
@Ghost345 @godzillavskong Same here. I still buy some ps2 games every once in awhile but I just need a few more until I have all the games I want for my ps2 collection.
