Philips Introduces Immersion Goggles

Philips is hoping that its new Scuba immersion visor will go where no goggles have gone before.

Philips is hoping that gamers who want to get into their favorite games will take a look at its new immersion visor, Scuba.

Developed with partner Retinal Displays, console or computer gamers who put on the visor will be surrounded by the game's environment, giving them the experience of playing the game on a big screen. The device offers a wide field of view and blocks exterior lighting, increasing focus on the gameplay.

Game immersion products have traditionally failed because either the product did not provide a decent level of performance or were too expensive for the average gamer. Philips hopes that its product is priced right and performs well. The Scuba does not require a TV, has been designed to withstand extended play and portability, and can be used without removing prescription glasses.

"The marketplace is being flooded by identical playing games. These new titles may have varying degrees of graphics quality and advanced capabilities but essentially there's little difference in the user's experience," Wald Siskens, the general manager for Philips Immersive Products, said in a statement. "Consumers are figuring this out and are now looking for products that will give them a rejuvenated experience. Scuba can fill this gap by heightening the level of intensity and interaction typically found in today's games."
