PC Dead Space 2 now 'under consideration'

[UPDATE] EA officially responds to reports of sci-fi horror game's demise, saying it's not officially canceled--but not in active development either.

[UPDATE] Following Tuesday's reports that Dead Space 2 had been canceled for the PC, Electronic Arts has released an official statement regarding the game. "Visceral Studios is dedicated to delivering an outstanding Dead Space sequel for the Xbox 360 and PS3," a company rep said, "A PC SKU is under consideration. Nothing additional at this time." The original story is below.

On Monday, the PC edition of Dead Space 2 was curiously absent from Electronic Arts' release calendar for its next fiscal year. Though the console and newly revealed handheld editions of the sci-fi horror game were listed as arriving in the January-March quarter of 2011, the Games for Windows edition--announced just in December--was missing in action.

Unfortunately, like many things that go missing, Dead Space 2 appears to be gone altogether on the PC. Venerable game news site Blue's News is quoting an EA rep as saying, "As of right now a PC SKU is not in the plan."

Dead Space 2's cancellation on the PC comes just a month and a half after it was officially announced as coming to the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. However, the move isn't so shocking, considering the fact that the original Dead Space sold under 40,000 copies at retail on the PC domestically, according to NPD Group figures. NPD figures do not, however, include digital distribution, which makes up an increasingly large slice of PC game sales.

I just hope they'll lose completely these 40 000 + sales by not releasing on the PC. I got a PS3 and I don't even plan on buying the game on it since I didn't enjoy the controls of the demo of the first one on a gamepad. Mouse + keyboard > gamepad for DeadSpace.

Damn, I bought this game on Steam and I was happy to pay for this game instead of getting an illegal copy, don't make me regret it EA.

@To-shiba Agree, if it happens. I also only do PC Gaming. I'd rather miss the title than get a console. That will never happen. Before anyone freaks, I'm not hating, just really not a console person. If you are, enjoy it, it's just not for me.

Dead Space for me is a "dream console game." Action, arcade, third person, RPG - this is why I own a 360. FPS, MMO, Sims, that is the realm of the PC. I adore PC gaming, I wouldn't buy this game for the PC though...

to all you people who support the companies DRM and bash pirates for destroying gaming.....Piracy begins when developers screw honest gamers with nazi DRM methods and spyware installs.

Look at spore, one of the most convoluted, sophisticated DRM restrictions ever...also one of the most heavily pirated games.

How many people WOULD have bought a game if they had just treated the customer fairly. Instead people go and take it for free

You can already pre-order Dead Space 2 for PC on EA store anyway.

    well, this is interesting!
ubisoft puts a Damned DRM on AC2 and EA Cancels Dead space 2 !
    Pc gaming is dying!
But, I think that although Piracy is the main concern
but there are other things that make the PC a more
troublesome platform than the other ones!

I never pirate anything. From movies, to music, and certainly NOT games. I support strongly the artists and their hard work they have done for our pleasure. And to be a contributor to Piracy (yes, you who's feeling a tang of guilt after taking part in this), is a frigging disgrace. Also, you dumbasses, you are ruining for everyone.
I gather my pennies, and when I get enough cash, I proudly go out and buy the games I want or can afford. People are just so gaddamn greedy and lazy. They do not care what happens in the future, as long as they can get that temporary fix.
People must also realise- NOTHING's for free on earth. And there are always repercussions. Like the one we're having now regarding a lot of games going off the PC market. Soon I'll have to be forced to buy a console player which I do not want! I don't want to get PS3. I like upgrading my pc up to its neck.
    Damn you lazy bastards.

Singleplayer PC games won't survive the piracy. For every copy of Dead Space sold, there is 10 copies pirated. 40,000 sold at retail? that's not worth the extra millions needed to develop it for the PC.

While i'm an avid PC fan and I'm disappointed that Dead Space 2 is not coming to the PC. I'm more disgusted at the amount of piracy that has taken over the industry.

There's no way they won't make it for the PC. If anything it will just be released at a later date.

I might just have to ditch my PC and get a 360 :/ cause soon it looks like NO one will make PC games.

they're just too fkn terrified of Piracy

i hope in the end logic prevails. if they dont release dead space 2 no pc this would be a self destruct attempt. they wont release the best survival horror on pc for what because of piracy? the loss will be greater if they dont release it at all. they will loose valuable customers cause in pc the game shined not in consoles that fall in popularity. nowdays everyone has a pc its not like the old days when every house had a ps1 or 2. a serious blender if they dont relese this fantastic game in pc especially in the hard days that eas stock is on.

I'd think piracy was no bigger a threat to their income than used game sales, which they see no profit from. Some people pirate games because they didn't have any intention of buying them or because they are waiting on a cheaper price. Reducing piracy won't lead to more sales. More demos might, instant access to games at a good price might, and so might free value added functions like Steam.

The main ones who benefit from used games are console makers--if the consumer isn't buying used consoles.

did you ever think that spending time on just ps3 and 360 will save money
people won't be pirating copies of it as much

i know some would be pirated on 360 and ps3 but not compared on how many would be pirated on pc

its all the people who do pirate copies on pc's fault because many companies dont trust the pc market anymore

    @ash

The original xbox was a gaming pc in a box since it had pc gaming hardware. Whether or not you thought the hardware was poor is irrelevant. As for optimizing you need to remember that when working on an xbox game developers have to spend months optimizing the code to maximize the available resources. Those optimizations don't cleanly translate since the cpu is different. . A big difference between the processors is that the xbox cpu is in-order:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Out-of-order_execution#In-order_processors

Software development is complicated and there are costs involved with supporting multiple platforms. You can't just create a game and then hit a button have both pc and 360 versions created. You need a separate team to optimize the pc version which costs money. A good example of this is GTAIV which was handled by Rock Star Toronto. They had an entirely different team handle the pc port. Software development is far more difficult than most people imagine.

    @dc337

I'm calling someone out, I apologize, but--how much does it cost to port a game that was developed on PCs to PC? I mean, It's coded on Intel and optimized and compiled for the Xbox's PowerPC processors. Cite your sources, explain to me how making a menu system, refining keyboard and mouse options is more expensive than the reverse. My graphics card is so cheap, I can tell most game nowadays are optimizing PC games for mass consumer cards as well because I can play damn near everything maxed out no AA--and it still looks better than Xbox. Tell me how you think it's easier and cheaper to squeeze cutting edge graphics into, older hardware like the Xbox? It's optimized more for Xbox, not PC.

Btw, the original Xbox wasn't a gaming PC, it was cheapo hardware. My brother had a PIII 700mhz back in 1998 and it was slow. People forget this is one of consoles biggest strengths, needing less power to get better performance. However, common PCs are so powerful now, anyone can get one that is a multitude more powerful than the current gen console hardware, for similar price.

Hey EA, I've bought Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Crysis (and warhead), Dead Space, Medal of Honor (everything), BattleField 2. I'm a PC gamer. I liked Dead Space so much I even bought the Wii title.

I dont have an Xbox, not going to get one. Dont have a PS3, not getting one. I am a PC gamer. If you want me as a customer, you're going to have to put this out on the PC. I buy your games. I support your efforts. The only way to keep my support is to put out games I want to buy on my platform of choice.

In the US and UK Dig downloads count for 60% to 80% of sales. I do not blame ubisoft for putting on that protection because of pirates(apparently it wont chew Much MB) but not making the game all together come on, AC1 also only sold around 60 000 copies on PC but there is something wrong in that figure when BT games( see previous posts about store) in South Africa alone sells just under 20 000. CONSPIRISY??!!???
Micrsoft pull your g o d d a m weight you are not on the PC game alliance for nothing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Capcom thank you for your support on the PC platform you are now my prefered distributor

When the haell NPD reports will add Digital downloads, COMON MORE THEN 60% OF PC SALES ARE DIGITAL DOWNLOADS. For example look at Sims without digital downloads, It wouldn't have been the best PC selling game of 2009 despite the fact it was leaked online 40 days ago

Ha Ha EA will shoot themselves in the foot. I have played Dead space one on my Xbox and I am sorry but once u play it on PC the xbox version looks like a flash game.
How is that number of 40 000 copies on PC possible I live in JHB South Africa and yes we are very much a first world city even rivaling the US states and UK citys, anyway we have a Gamestop-ish bunch of chain stores called BT games
and they moved 10 000 copies of Dead Space PC that means BT Games moved 1/4 of all Dead Space PC games world wide, how do I know cos I know the owner of BT games very well, Stop the lies EA you have a HQ in Fourways JHB you guys must burn and by the way PC gaming out performs console in South Africa. My 5970 will make mince meat outta MS's Xbox 3 s^%ty

How is EA being greedy? They only sold 40k units at retail. The pc port takes a separate team of people. It isn't as if they always build the pc version first and then hit a giant xbox button. The pc version has to be optimized and supported for a multitude of hardware. Remember also that the 360 uses a powerpc-based cpu. It isn't like the original xbox days when the xbox was a gaming pc in a box. There are differences that have to be accounted for and a pc port takes an additional investment. They probably looked at the cost of a pc port and decided it wasn't worth the effort. Games cost money to make. They can't support a platform out of goodwill or charity.

With regards to the "Update": the damage is done, and PC fans know the score with EA. You can port to the PC and publish, but you've turned many an eye towards not purchasing EA titles, or downloading them for free.

Funny how it takes an angry mob to change a greedy company's mind. I would have preferred purchasing a torch and pitchfork and going to town, actually..

    @GGCrew_basic

yeah they should include the digital distribution numbers like Steam Direct2Drive Impulse etc. Because I bet they take up quite a bit of the purchases. And because for the PC, its a very convenient way to get games! So going strictly by retail for a platform with a more convenient way does not give any clear picture at all

As a primarily-PC gamer, I was saddened by the rumor/omission of a PC SKU for Dead Space 2. Seems like a sad situation for a sequel to one of the best games of 2008.

At least I can say that I was among the 40,000 who purchased the game... (I wonder how the game sold via digital channels like Steam?)

I don't have either an Xbox360 or a PS3, so this game would be (currently) unavailable to me.

If it's just the PC it doesn't affect me at all.

That said, the more I hear about this game the more disinterested I am.
While I can't make any solid judgments yet, it certainly sounds like the developers have decided to go with more mainstream action instead of create a sequel that will actually be scary.
Apparently they don't realize the action in the first game was only really good because the lack of ammo and horror complimented it. If I never ran out of ammo, it wouldn't have been scary or fun. Case in point, after beating it on normal and starting a new game+, I decided to play through the highest difficulty because the enemies were like canonfodder and it ruined the experience. This game needs to be hard and terrifying to work. Every shot needs to count, or none of it's worthwhile.

Maybe it will still be good. RE2 was more action oriented but still felt very similar to the first. Still, I have to wonder. Visceral aren't excatly the best developers around. DS may have been a fluke for them, as they seem to make terrible decisions a lot of the time. Of course, that could just as easily be EA's doing.
    We'll see.
