Paradox Interactive conquers Europa Universalis
Swedish developer now sole owner of the rights to the PC strategy series; says online expansion is planned.
Swedish studio Paradox Interactive has announced it is now the proud sole owner of all intellectual property rights to Europa Universalis. Based on the popular board game, the strategy series was distributed by French-Canadian publisher Strategy First.
"It is with great satisfaction that we announce the acquisition of this brand, especially since we have been working under a license for several years," says Theodore Bergquist, CEO of Paradox Interactive. "Europa Universalis is one of the strongest brands for strategy games on the PC, and our future plans include sequels as well as add-ons like an online game."
To date, there have been three games in the Europa Universalis series: Europa Universalis, Europa Universalis II, and Europa Universalis: Crown of the North. While those three were for the PC, Paradox is also working on a DS version of Europa Universalis II. The game's engine has also powered several other Paradox-developed games, including Crusader Kings. The company is currently working on adapting another classic board game, Diplomacy, for the PC.
