Obsidian's Project Eternity RPG fully funded

Fallout developer's isometric, party-based PC role-playing game surpasses $1.1 million target in just over a day; stretch goals scaling up to $2.4 million revealed.

Obsidian Entertainment's Kickstarter campaign for an isometric, party-based PC role-playing game has been fully funded. The crowd-funding effort for Project Eternity reached its $1.1 million target in just over 24 hours, and currently stands at over $1.5 million from more than 39,000 backers.

Now that the campaign's funding target has been reached, Obsidian has laid out stretch goals for Project Eternity. If the effort hits $1.6 million (which it is quickly approaching), Obsidian will offer a Mac version of the game, as well as a new "major" storyline with quests, locations, NPCs, and loot.

If the campaign hits $1.8 million, Obsidian will add a new playable race, class, and companion to Project Eternity. At $2 million, the developer will create in-game houses for players to customize and store equipment in. If the effort hits $2.2 million, Obsidian will add a new region, faction, and companion, and will create a Linux version of the game.

Lastly, Obsidian said if the crowd-funding campaign for Project Eternity hits $2.4 million or more, additional features will be added, though these were not specified.

In addition to Obsidian's Project Eternity (still a working title), the developer is at work on March's South Park: The Stick of Truth and a game based on Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time fantasy series.

1.1 million for making a game was ridiculously low. Dont be fooled it doesnt cost 200k to make a player house, im pretty sure most of the excess money will go into the base game since most of the time things dont go conforming to plan. Shit and delays happen and having some extra money for extensive bug testing and keeping the game more in production if needed is always good.

And stop complaining about multiplayer, baldurs gate, icewind dale and neverwinter nights all had multiplayer(albeit they were D&D games so the option of dungeon crawling, rping, w/e with others was pretty much a must). I personally dont care about multiplayer for such a game, im just sick of reading about this highhorse attitude where multiplayer is looked as a cash and noob magnet.

...and if the game hits 3 million, the devs will all eat dog poo  and put it on youtube.

They're setting up some awfully specific goals here, and it sounds like they haven't really started the game yet. Good recipe for disappointment.

Obsidian have claimed the developers supporting previous projects (KOTOR 2, NWN2, Fall-out New Vegas, etc.) were rushed to market forcing them to put unfinished/untested products out for consumption.  There should be no excuses for Project Eternity.  If they fail at this game, Obsidian should be shut down permanently.

ok, it was superool... until obsidian became greedy and did the scaling shit. i mean a real good and awesome developer would add all those for free anyways. because he knows he will get the funding he needs to do them when he is honest in his craftmanship.

i was rooting for this kickstarter, now i feel like its another dlc before you buy thing happening. shame on you obsidian.

take away all those features and put them in the 1.1 million edition. you will get your 2.4 even faster if you do this.

@zoeyleft seems like your the greedy one. stop thinking your entitled to everything when you not.

@zoeyleft This is because of the way kickstarter works.

The devs have to choose a very low goal.

Since if they ask for what they'd really need, and they don't make it, they receive 0 funding. The goal has to be met, so for garantees the goal is low.

And they then add stretch goals. Those stretch goals are not there to pay for the extra features (not completely at least). A new race doesn't cost 200k to make. But to fund the game. They are necessary, if they don't get that amount, you won't get the stretch goal, but other hidden things won't be made because they didn't have enough money.

Do you really think a big RPG cost only 1.1m$ to make? Obsidian isn't a small dev team. How many people will work on the game? 20? 30 ? The average salary is around 6k$ per month. In salaries alone, WITHOUT the office, the monthly fee for programs licences (yes a lot are paid per month), utilities, it would cost them more than 120k a month. You can double or triple that for the rest of the expenses.

Do you reall ywant them to make the game in 3 months? The release is set for mid 2014. They have to eat until then.

And anyways, will it be so terrible if we don't make the goal that adds "a player house" or a "new compagnion"? Those will be modded in, and while they are nice additions, they are not game breaking and are just there as "motivations".

@zoeyleft It seems you don't value honesty. What if they had only gotten 1.1 million? All these features cost money to make. The funding goal is the bare minimum to make it happen and stretch goals add additional content. Would you rather prefer them promising everything and delivering on nothing?

I like the Midgard Serpent as the logo. That's pretty cool.

But also a bit similar to Elder Scolls Online's logo....

yeah KickStarter! Lets fund the games we want! I think we're all tired of the cookie-cutter approach to game play repeats.  Don't try to sell your ideas to big companies that want to just make profit, sell your ideas to US: THE GAMERS, the end users!

Does some of that funding including buying the game or is it all pre-development money? I mean, if you have a Mac, and the PC version is currently being made (seeing as how it has reached its goal) could the money from buying a PC version support making of the Mac and Linux for the future, or does the rest go into the devs pockets? I've got no problem with the latter since they are making something based on consumer demand, but I am curious.

@Fembot_Eulogy "Gamers who back the project at $20 will receive a digital copy of Project Eternity, should the campaign be successful, redeemable through Steam. A contribution of $35 secures backers a copy of the game, as well as a digital soundtrack and collector's book. The book includes concept art, a player's handbook, monster manual, information about the campaign setting and characters, and a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Project Eternity." - GameSpot: http://www.gamespot.com/news/obsidian-turns-to-kickstarter-for-project-eternity-6396538

Just how long have these kickstarters been goin on? I seem to have just heard about them a few months ago. It looks as though it was a great idea(understatement of the year right there).

 @tightwad34

I think for a while... I've been under the impression KickStarter is a website where you go to put up a business proposal of any scale and people or businesses, small investors or large can fund said projects in whatever amount they feel fit in the hopes you'll get enough to create your project. I'm sure it's more complex then that, but you get the idea?

Fembot_Eulogy
Fembot_Eulogy

@tightwad34 It might be the new wave of game development as we know it. Everyone is fed up with EA and the way they've done business while releasing shoddy games. This at least puts a bit more power back to the consumer. Who knows where this could lead?

tightwad34
tightwad34

 @Fembot_Eulogy

It's defininitely going somewhere. I wonder why they are starting all this now. They could have been doing this for quite a while. Although I suppose the rising cost of everyting may play a factor. If it keeps games we want to play in development, then keep it the F up.

Fembot_Eulogy
Fembot_Eulogy

@tightwad34 Ya totally keep it up :) Why they only started this now is solely left to our speculation. I have my theory which involves bullying from larger corporations, but I could be way off.

Not a fan of isometric games, but KOTOR II had a deep, powerful story element so I look forward to that aspect of the game.

@emanuelp2  not only KOTOR 2, but New Vegas too, even Dungeon Siedge 3,which i personally hate, has surprisingly good story and writing, so yes, story telling is Obsidian strong side.

Dear Obsisdian. Please for once, do some extensive bug testing on your game before release, please. You have some talented writers at your disposal, don't waste them.

@shalashaska88 Dungeon Siege 3 was bug free, probably because of internal instead of outsourced QA.

lol milking it now don't you think? i think they can come out with a good game...but i think the graphics might be truly scaled to fit the budget...which i don't mind but im wondering if people know that

Gray_Raven
Gray_Raven

@jsmoke03 That may not be the case. There are a lot of great engines that are free (UDK4 for example). I only hope that when the game comes out (say with 2.4mil budget) that the players will honor the fact that it's made for both Mac and Linux as well as Windows and they will actually buy the game rather then get it from one torrent or another. I myself though avid pirate (yargh!) do plan to buy this game even if it means not eating anything for weeks.  :)

With no one like ea to tell them when to finish..Id like them to make a bug free game for once..Just to show what these guys can really really do..It will keep all these people crying about here games quiet..THan they will realise that they are pushed to release games early..

schesak
schesak

@Gladestone1 I agree with you, but keep in mind that the reason they are given deadlines is because the amount of funds they are allowed to spend is being limited.   Keep in mind that people (labor) costs money.   The longer you work on a game, the more it costs.  Thus, deadlines ensure they don't continue to bleed more and more money without bringing some in.  When a publisher pushes a developer to release a game it is more about stopping the spending of additional money then it is about making new money from sales.

Guess what, with kickstarter raised funds they STILL have a limited amount of money to work with.   Thus they will still be pushed to a release date.  That being, sometime around when the money runs out.

The same Obsidian that: broke Fallout New Vegas, ruined Star Wars KOTOR2, made a mess of Alpha Protocol. With the exception of Neverwinter Nights 2, what have they actually done right and how are they still in business ?
