Fallout: New Vegas dev teaming with THQ on Comedy Central-licensed 360, PS3, PC game, due in 2012; Parker, Stone writing, voicing, overseeing.
Obsidian Entertainment has been teasing its next project since March, when CEO Feargus Urquhart called it a no-brainer of a licensed property. Today, GameStop-owned Game Informer magazine put all of the speculation to rest, pegging Obsidian's "leading animation franchise" as Comedy Central's South Park.
Announced via this month's cover story, South Park: The Game is in development for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, with THQ handling publishing duties. GI characterized the game as a "full-scale" role-playing game, where players assume the role of a new kid in town tasked with making friends and defending South Park from a "wide range of threats."
The magazine cover features the show's iconic principle characters--Kyle, Stan, Cartman, and Kenny--surrounded by the quartet's supporting cast. The pond's reflection alters the scene, showing the boys in fantasy-inspired garb among a handful of different presumed "threats," including a dragon, Satan, Manbearpig, and more.
In addition to writing the game's script and performing voice-over work, show creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are overseeing development. South Park: The Game is set for release sometime in 2012.
[UPDATE] Following the publication of this article, THQ officially announced South Park: The Game, confirming that it will be available during the back half of 2012 on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.
Definitely a Day 1 purchase. It looks just like the show. I wonder if it's turn -based? I'd crap my pants if it is.
Fallout 3 is one of my favorite games, South Park is one of my favorite shows. Jesus how could this not be a win! Side note: They should do a Simpsons RPG set in Springfield.
This game actually looks like it's going to be good!!! It will probably be released after the first half of season 16!!!
@Snakehead11 ironic that you would be against obsidian entertainment when your avatar is from one of there games
This sounds pretty cool! However I have to say I would of preferred if they took the same premise but made a Simpsons RPG instead, making a new kid starting at Springfield Elementary.
Please take your time making this right and do not disappoint all the South Park fans!!! Please............
I hope that this is good!, A decent South Park game is a no-brainer and long in the waiting. I hope they keep things original.
@marco1k1 Obsidian is creating the game, and Trey Parker and Matt Stone are writing and voicing it. It is very different from previous games.
@Enforcer246 LOL really? I would expect a comment about the Simpsons, but South Park is very popular and current.
@Enforcer246 South Park will die when the world stops doing stupid things which can be made fun of :P So basically the only thing to kill south park will be total thermonuclear war :)
South Park + RPG just sounds weird, like chalk and cheese. HOWEVER, i do love south park, and i do love RPG's :D Bring it on I say. Great stuff that the writers will be on board too, quality.
Seems like it could be interesting but is there really that many people wanting a South Park game? Personally I can't say I've ever yearned for one and the ones I have played have been alright at best. Don't get me wrong its a great show but I'm just not bothered enough personally, One look at the other comments suggests that some people are thought :P I suppose we will see if it turns out good (and I just mean if the concept works and is enjoyable to play, its not a bash on Obsidian)
This one's actually got the show's creators overseeing its development, so that gives me more hope that this will be a good game.
Can i piss on my snowballs again? Fallout mixed the with N64 South Park game would be an instant Epic Win.
You can tell half the people on here have maybe played one Obsidian game and pretend like every single thing they make is broken. Never had one glitch in Dungeon Siege 3 and since I didn't buy New Vegas at launch never had a problem with that game either. I am not saying they are perfect but I am tired of people taking the one thing they remember about a company and stating it as fact.
This has lots of potential if done well. With Trey and Matt overseeing development i don't see it failing in the humor department. As for the rest we'll have to wait and see.
