New GPU to cost $399 and is based a higher clocked version of the GK104 chip in the GTX 680.

GPU-maker Nvidia has unveiled the GTX 770 graphics card, which is set to retail for a recommended price of $399 (£329). The GTX 770 is based on last year's GTX 680 and makes use of the same GK104 Kepler chip. That gives it 8 SMX units and 1536 CUDA cores, but with a slightly higher clock speed of 1046 Mhz. Nvidia's GPU Boost 2.0 technology steps that up to 1085 Mhz.

The GTX 770 will be offered in 2GB and 4GB 256-bit GDDR5 memory configurations. The memory sees a substantial performance boost from the 6.0 Gbps speed of the GTX 680 to 7.0 Gbps, giving the card a total memory bandwidth of 224.3 GB/s.

The card's enclosure also sees an improvement, being based on the same cooling system as the GTX Titan and GTX 780. The thermal design power is 230W, with a requirement of 600W power supply.

Nvidia is promising performance improvements of up to 65 percent over the GTX 570, and 43 percent over the GTX 670.

The GTX 770 is the second card to be launched in the 700-series. The first, the GK110-based GTX 780, was launched last week. GameSpot's review called the GTX 780 a "brilliant graphics card that lets you crank every game to the extreme."

The time for an upgrade might be coming, my trusty 5870 is starting to slow on me...

Def skipping this gen. Maybe the 800 series will bring in some new tech.

My 9800GT is still holding up ok with the latest games, but think it might just be time to upgrade, what with the next-gen consoles coming out which means bigger and more power hungry games for us PC gamers.

Just ordered one Friday night. Upgrading from a GTX560. Should be pretty damned nice.

I overclocked my 670 to beat the 680 by a lot so why should I upgrade to this ?

@abdoalwaer because a 680 overclocked beats yours ... so...the argument never ends.
Equally the next load of cards will be better than yours so not sure what your point is. If you got a 6xx series your sorted.... for those who have not yet bought one, might aswell go to 7xx series now.

My GTX 460 still punches with the heavyweights as long as a I strip AA out of the latest games. I suppose 16gb of RAM might be helping somewhat.....

@DarkSaber2k

That is odd, my gtx480 is not holding up to the latest games. Heck it doesn't hold up to games that are 18 months old. I even overclocked it, put proper thermal paste in it, and clean it out regularly. I wish i could find the GPU wizard that allows all these internet users to get more performance with less hardware. By chance, are you running liquid nitrogen as a coolant on your 460?

@WhiskeyDexMI @DarkSaber2k

Yeah my 680 was just choking on Serious Sam 3 the other day.  Running at a modest 1920x1200 too.  Before the 680 I was running 460's in SLI and the 680 destroys them performance wise....so

DarkSaber's idea of punching with the heavyweights might not be the same as yours.

TohouAsura

@DarkSaber2k Not it doesn't, the more ram allows you for more multitasking in cooperation with the CPU.As long as you have as much as the game requires, it makes no difference, the game only uses what it requires.

I have 16GB like you. No difference.

Benny_a

@DarkSaber2k Nope not helping at all, the amount of RAM has no effect on game speed unless you have less then requered, but if you have more it wont speed it up.

I had GTX580 which is twice faster then yours and well it sucked major balls in new games, my breaking point was Tomb Raider.

Got 7990Ghz edition, because next gen games will be ATI optimized since both consoles have ATI GPUs (actually all 3, but who counts wiicrap eh?)

This really pisses me off because I just bought a GTX680 around a month ago

This is what I hate about technology these days (especially phones) - Things just don't feel SPECIAL anymore because you know in the back of your head that your new item will be replaced in a couple of months...

Sigh...the older days...

@TerminalError

You may have bought your 680 a month ago, but the thing's been out for over a year so you could've guessed a refresh was in the works....info on the 700 series has been roiling for quite some time.  First we thought it might be Maxwell, then when Titan hit it was pretty clear it would be a Kepler refresh.

And the 680 is still a great card and plenty damn special.  There's no compelling upgrade for it until Maxwell arrives.

WhiskeyDexMI

@TerminalError

Ouch. That is always harsh. In all fairness though, you should have known. Nvidia's gk110 chip was no secret. Almost every review i read about the Titan mentioned other cards coming very soon too.

stevelerario
stevelerario

@TerminalError Actually, well if you bought an Evga card, which you should have, they have a buy back program where you can basically return the older card to upgrade to a new one...don't know if any companies other Evga do this though......Still loving my 570HD with 2.5gb

TerminalError
TerminalError

@stevelerario @TerminalError Yeah of course its EVGA - I don't really trust any others apart from maybe Gigabyte and MSI...

But I'm not willing to pay the difference to get a 780...way too expensive

vassago_
vassago_

@TerminalError @stevelerario  Well, this is kinda how the PC hardware scene has....ALWAYS been. Every 6 months, there's a new CPU/GPU/Mobo/RAM that's bigger and better. You just have to aim as high as you are willing to spend, to be outdated soon thereafter ;)

This time last week I had no plan on upgrading from my GTX 580. However my girlfriend has some expenses to claim so Its looking like I will be upgrading now.

I'm thinking EVGA GTX 780 Super Clocked (currently sold out a lot of places In the UK). I'll be needing a new higher resolution monitor then, Dell Ultrasharp. You can also pick up the Samsung 830 SSD 500gb for less than 250 notes now as well so I'll have that too.

I want to upgrade so bad from my 275GTX, but I'm thinking about hanging on until the 800 series. The 780 GTX is tempting as hell.

Keivz_basic
Keivz_basic

@YearoftheSnake5 Ha! I have a GTX 275 too! I was going to go for the 780 but I think I'll go with the 770. But I'll wait for the new consoles to arrive first then see the benchmarks on the newest games before I decide. In the meantime I'll upgrade my processor & RAM and finish my backlog.

I want the gigabyte 4gb version of the 770, as an upgrade for my nearly 2yr old 570oc 1.25 .need to start shopping around for a price on 770's.

pccasegear/centrecom/msy/scorptec any suggestions?

Coseniath
Coseniath

@jeremy-   Hello jeremy. I have the same GPU as you (a slightly oc GTX570) And from the benchies I can tell you that you can skip this generation, unless you go for a GK110 (titan or GTX780) which ofc its very expensive. The GTX770 will give you 50% only increase of GPU performance for $400 which is not so good imo. Your GTX570 is at the 66% (2/3) of the power of GTX770. Source: http://tpucdn.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_770/images/perfrel_1920.gif So unless you are playing on far more ressolutions like 1440p or a multimonitor setup, just SKIP any form of GK104.

stevelerario
stevelerario

@Coseniath I have the 570HD and i agree totally...unless you have the money for the titan really....so glad i waited for the HD with 2.5 gb vram.....and 5 gb is useless for another 2 years about so its just worth skipping

jeremy-
jeremy-

@Coseniath I'll take what you've said under advisement. I need to look at benchmarks myself. I can imagine going form 1.25 to 4gb vram is going to have more than 50% performance increase against some quotients, but generally what you've said seems to align with popular thinking and the early benchmarks.

To be honest, I've been playing games on PC for like 4 years as I've maintained a good box and i get a better experience than xbox.... but I'll probably try and upgrade my tv to 65" at the end of the year to something 4k and 3d... and I'll probably be suckered into both nextgen consoles. With this sort of kit as well as surround sound, what is the point in playing on PC, marginally better graphics doesnt beat pretty much the same graphics but with an entertainment system setup.

Wanting to get a graphics card is partially about playing with cd project red's REDKIT and wanting more than 1.25GB vram for rendering, and having a new toy to tide me over until xmas.

@buccomatic @jeremy- Yeh, agreed. I'm not even sure that the 4gb variant is out yet as I cant see many around. Edit*** maybe this.. (http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=84049&vpn=GV-N770OC-4GD&manufacture=Gigabyte) Further, this seems to be one of the few times ordering from overseas might be cheaper than a local hardware store.

buccomatic
buccomatic like.author.displayName 1 Like

@jeremy- hmm not sure about ordering from overseas.

i'm thinking that i'm just going to wait for a 6gb version (790?) comes out, buy a titan or get the new radeon (6gb) card when it comes out.

i don't want a card with anything less that 5gb of ram because all the new games are going to be console ports. and since both new consoles will have 5gb vram on their gpus, the new PC games (ported over from the consoles) might require at least 5gb vram to run full speed with everything on ultra.

so i'm undecided at this point.

BS on Nvidia saying 770 is 43% faster than 670.

HKILLER88888
HKILLER88888 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@DevilMightCry yeah it's not 43%...770 is barely 5% better than 680 and 680 is 5% better than 670.so at most it's 10% better than 670...BUT the thing is GTX 770 is priced at 420$.The cheapest GTX 680(2GB) I've found is priced at 490$ and the GTX 670 FTW(2GB) is for 420$.so i guess 770 has a better price/performance than 670...i say these by looking at Tomshardware's Benchmarks and EVGA shop....

pound-u
pound-u

@HKILLER88888 @DevilMightCry

If the 770 is better, why don't they drop the price of the 670 and 680? I got my GTX 670 OC on sale for like $370. It's regular price is $400.

HKILLER88888
HKILLER88888

@pound-u @HKILLER88888 @DevilMightCry well give it some time will ya?770 was released in stores just 1 or 2 days ago.besides you can always get very good deals on internet sites such as tiger direct or even the manufacturer's site for different events.but also don't expect huge price drops from manufacturers usually they won't come any lower than a profitable price and at that point after a while they will stop manufacturing the item.for example GTX 580 Classified(3GB) is still at price of 500$-600$.it's been more than 8 month that it has been stock on that price and they aren't going to lower it since they have stopped making em.maybe they would lower it a bit later like after another 7 month but i doubt it...

grasu

@IndiePrower I would suggest that if you want advice on what card to get you don't ask for it on gamespot forums. Heed the warning, as some people around here think that the PS4/XboxOne will have 5 (FIVE) gigs of VRAM - when they're running APUs.

buccomatic
buccomatic like.author.displayName like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 3 Like

@IndiePrower i think you might be better off with the 7970 because when the new video games come out, at the end of year, the system specs for those games might require 5 gb vram since they will be ports from the consoles that have 5gb ram gpus.

i don't know for sure if that will be the case. but i'm hesitant to buy any video card, right now, unless it has at least 5-6 gb of vram.

godzillavskong
godzillavskong

Yep. I have 2 IceQ 6870s crossfired, yet I run into VRAM limitations. Next GPU I get is gonna have at least 3gb VRAM.

WonderfulTonite
WonderfulTonite

@Coseniath @buccomatic @godzillavskong

Ha you are wrong Coseniath a game doesn't have to have better graphics then Crysis 3 to use more video ram.  Killzone Shadow Fall uses less video ram (originally was using 4Gb total or less) and looks way better then Crysis 3 on max.

Coseniath
Coseniath

@buccomatic @godzillavskong My prediction is that they will first reach their GPU processing limit than the 5GB VRAM. Their true output will be 1920x1080 so in order to reach 5GB VRAM on this resolution you have to create a game that will make Crysis 3 will look like Pac-man comparing to it. So no. The new consoles are just not capable, not powerful enough of running such a game. I would doubt that they can even maximize graphics at Crysis 3. So the only need for 5GB VRAM is if you are going for 4K or a multimonitor setup.

buccomatic
buccomatic

@godzillavskong but what i'm saying is this.

if 99% of PC games are console ports, and the console ports were made with system specs of 5gb vram gpus (xbox one and ps4) then by the time the new games start coming to pc (december). then any video card with less than 5gb vram will be obsolete and we will have to instantly upgrade again.

in other words, the games system requirements will be AT LEAST 5gb vram because they are straight console ports.
