I work at futureshop in Ottawa and the Ps3s have sold 5 times the units then the 360s in the last 3 weeks
Game-industry sales surge 62 percent north of the border, thanks to post-price-cut surge of Sony console; Wii, DS still dominate.
When game-industry research firm NPD releases US retail figures for the month of July, some analysts expect that they will show the PlayStation 3 outsold the Xbox 360 for the first time, thanks to a pre-E3 Media & Business Summit price drop. Regardless of how the numbers shake out in the US, NPD confirmed to GameSpot today that the PS3 outsold Microsoft's console north of the border.
The PS3 managed to move more than 15,000 systems in Canada for the month, overtaking the 13,000 Xbox 360s sold. However, both consoles were bested handily by Nintendo's Wii, which racked up more than 36,000 sales for the month. On the portable side of the market, the DS topped all non-PC platforms in July with almost 46,000 units sold, well ahead of the PlayStation Portable's 6,000 tally.
The industry as a whole was up more than 62 percent for the month, to C$84 million ($78.9 million) from the C$51.8 million ($48.7 million) it managed in July 2006. Portable hardware sales were up slightly, but console hardware revenues for the month more than tripled, leading to an overall 11 percent increase for systems, up to C$35.8 million ($33.6 million).
On the software side of the business, growth was significant, but not as explosive. Overall software sales were up more than 30 percent, to C$38.2 million ($35.9 million), led by a 43 percent increase in console software. Portable games only managed 8 percent growth for the month. Rounding out the industry picture, accessory sales were up more than 78 percent, to C$10 million ($9.4 million).
The best-selling games chart yielded a few surprises. Activision's Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s was the best-selling new release, but only managed to make it to the fourth spot. Nintendo's Wii Play (which comes packed with a spare Wii Remote) was the best-seller of the month, and the original PlayStation 2 Guitar Hero II topped its Encore by coming in second. A value pack of randomly assorted Xbox games came in third. The rest of the best-selling software titles are listed below.
Canada's top 10 best-selling games for July 2007:
1. Wii Play with Wii Remote--Wii
2. Guitar Hero II with guitar--PS2
3. Value Pack (included games vary)--Xbox
4. Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s--PS2
5. Pokémon Diamond--DS
6. Mario Party 8--Wii
7. Guitar Hero II with guitar--Xbox 360
8. Transformers: The Game--PS2
9. Pokémon Pearl--DS
10. New Super Mario Bros.--DS
Figures that the DS oversold the PSP. Theres no big exclusive games for it. The DS has Mario, Pokemon, Zelda, and much more stuff.
Everybody knows the ps3 is so much better than the wii and xbox 360 the only reason they dont they like other consoles better is because you got your 360 or wii earlier and cant afford a ps3. The PS3 is something to be proud of unless you bought the 360 first ;)
Who cares what others have, it's what you have! If you're happy with your ps3 then good for you! This isn't about the world selling more xbox's than the ps3, it's about the ps3 selling than the Xbox in CANADA.
The only reason Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s sold so well, was because people didn't know how Not-Good it was gonna be. Oh well. Guitar Hero II is the real deal.
OmegaNemsis28, that is of course your opinion. What i don't understand is where you are getting these free games that are better than WoW? If by free you mean non-subsriction like EQ and guild wars, you haven't really played WoW
Looks like Xbox is going to beat PS3 in N/A for some time to come. Worldwide is the more important figure however, and that will be a lot harder for M$ to hang onto in the coming year.
Just because xxxxx # of players play this game/console doesnt mean it's better. Its basically all about popularity like in school -kids hang out the the ones considered kool. It's like WoW - why do so many people play it? Well assuming its highly addictive and compared to drugs many times, millions of people play it 24/7 so that doesnt help. But WoW isn't a good game at all - I've played free games that are bigger, look better, and definatly play better but have triple as less people playing it. I dont see why people don't understand this.
Unfortunately for Sony, the Xbox 360 outsold the Playstation 3 in the United States, which means that in North America, where the price drop took place in July, the Playstation 3 STILL was outsold by the Xbox 360. Microsoft says sales of the Xbox 360 have greatly increased since the price drop of the Xbox 360 in August. It will be interesting to see what the sales for August are...Xbox 360 is going to be VERY FAR ahead!!!
It's funny how so many people sit an say how the Wii can't compete with the PS3 and the 360.. and how it's a gimmick for kids, or how it sucks because it doesn't have the graphics to compare. All I can say to you guys is this.. The Wii costs 100 dollars less than the premium 360 and 250 dollars less than the PS3.. while I can understand the PS3 being significantly more expensive, the 360 is only 100 dollars more than the Wii. The fact that the Wii basically sold as many units as the 360 + PS3 combined is a slap in the face to all you guys who said that Nintendo was doomed. The Wii has already passed the 360 in terms of total units sold while being released a whole year later. Nintendo has to be one of the smartest companies around who actually did some research this time and found out what the majority of people want, not the hardcore people who are outnumbered by the casual gamers by a longshot. Kudos to Nintendo to actually catering to a much larger audience, instead of just making a system that can single-handedly light my apartment on fire, or calculate my taxes. Go Cell processor.. :P
Toronto is PS3 capital because Asians buy Japanese consoles. Here in Montreal, the PS3 doesn't sell much.. My friend at Future Shop told me that he hasn't sold a PS3 in more than 2 weeks, and his co-workers might have sold 1 or 2 in that time frame.
Toronto is being nicknamed the second PS3 capital in the world after Tokyo, although the Wii is winning in both cities, PS3 has largely surpassed XBOX 360.
@fr33_loader I bought one of those 500 games in one units for $15 dollars at the mall. And I'm having a hell of a time. I don't need internet, I don't need a killer gpu, a optical drive. I don't need to spend extra money to have good games now. I probably already had those 500 games on a nintendo cartridge back in the '80s but, somehow, playing them again on my new console doesn't sound very appealing... guess it's a brain problem... Hey! I can have a hell of a time with a 99 cents deck of cards or a sponge ball too if the cheapest fun is the coolest now...
What I like is that given the Wii isn't meant to compete, the PS3 took it's place in the top within a year of it's launch. I don't think 360 ever even beat out the PS2 for month by month sales - take THAT M$! On the other hand, since I got a Wii, my PS3 hasn't been turned on cept to charge my phone and PSP with.
WAY TO GO SONY, US CANADIANS BELIEVE IN YOU! Now just waiting for someone to give me a good game to play on my PS3 and I'll be good to go, lol. Ah well only gotta wait like a month or two, some really good looking ones coming...finally.
The 60GB version becomes obsolete as soon as the user can successfully insert a bigger hard drive. Lawl.
being that the Canada is cooler, i thought 360s would have sold more being as the chance of them overheating decreases ever-so-slightly
That's kinda creepy... well, so long as Nintendo is up front I'm happy with the sales results. Wonder if the 360 pricecuts will affect their sales for next month? I know one of my friends is buying an Elite for Winter.
I SAID.... fr33_loader BioShock just showed you that you dont need a 50 gig Bluray to have fckin good game. It dont need 10 gig of sound to immerse yourself in the game. It dont need HDMI to have good graphics. It dont need wireless wifi to have fun. And you dont need to spend that extra money to enjoy good games NOW. But then you can always wait for KillZone 2 to come out because of its beautiful trailer. --------------------------------- YOU SAID...... EmperorSupreme @fr33_loader I bought one of those 500 games in one units for $15 dollars at the mall. And I'm having a hell of a time. Obviously I'm being sarcastic but you make no sense. Technology is going to advance with or without you. ----------------------------- I SAY..... HUH?!
Having a smaller, 65nm chip for the 360 WILL NOT allow for a "cooler" process. It is all about cost. The smaller processors cost less to manufacture and is also easier to manufacture. It will still be in the same place as our current 360 "big" processors. And the 3 red lights issue is not even a national concern and is far from a global concern. Sure, it's happening to more people than MS would want just like any company out there. But it's not like chickenpox wherein all 360 owners knows they are going to get it eventually. Besides, they've stepped up to the plate and increased the warranty to 1 year and now 3 years, even refunding customers who have paid for repairs (note: YOU DO NOT EVEN NEED TO CONTACT THEM ABOUT THE REFUND). If you are waiting for a smaller, so-called "cooler" processor and/or are scared of the 3 red lights, well, how do I say this without hurting your wittle feelings - you are dumb.
i have a 60g PS3 and i don't think it'll ever use that much space unless they make a game where u have to install it, and even if i use all the space up u can use any other laptop hard drive. The horror that is the core of the xbox 360 is not even worth mentioning, u don't have that option for the xbox 360 to change the hard drive and i feel bad for the xbox 360 owners that have 20g. The xbox 360 has some fun games but eventually will run out of space.
"the price is dropping and it will keep dropping, i can feel it" GamerzVoiceOr maybe you just want to believe it more then you can feel it.
bruno_ps2 as was said before, the 60GB isn´t obsolete in no way. Sony cares about the consumer, that´s why they made it possible for the ps3 to be upgraded with any 2,5" laptop harddrive, so you don´t have to worry about space. 360 doesn´t give that option, and i feel sorry for those who have a 20gb hd on their 360, and i won´t even say anything about the core version. 60gb isn´t obsolete, it is a bargain! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Unless your some sort of download rat pack or a download whore I find that my 20 GB does the job prefectly for me.

Really, who cares who outsells who. The greater issue here is that the game industry on the whole is doing well. As long as that continues, all three systems are rooted enough to be well supported whether they come in first or last. It's not like any of these systems are going die out before they're obsolete.
"how come all those months 360 outsold ps3, they never wrote an article about that. but the only time ps3 actually sells systems, and by not even doing a real price drop, they post it on the front page of the entire website?" ...because it's actually news? Use your head. Everyone already knew the 360 was selling better.
The 60gb PS3 isn't obsolete. Don't forget that it has the Emotion Engine built in side for close to 100% backwards compatibility. And you can easily upgrade the hard drive. The 80 ones don't have EE. If you want to talk about obsolete - then you should at least mention the core 360. And unless MS has proven that the new 360's aren't crap i.e. breakdown, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone even if it has more games.
"jameston80 Blackace : I agree with you 100% its the time to get a 360 if you dont already have one, tons of great games. As for the ps3 in price drop, well look at it this way, anyone who bought a 60 gb ps3 with the new price....you now own an obosolete system....they are no longer made, 360 cuts its price, but they still sell all 3 systems for choice, and the choice is great." It's not obsolete, it's still a PS3. It still has 60 GB, more than enough. It still has Blu Ray, and it still can play PS3 games. Just because they arent sold, doesnt mean they're obsolete. Sure, choice is great for the 360, but time and time again, that "choice" is usually just "buy it later, seperate, and for more money". How many people bought a core, and now will have to buy a hard drive to play future games? I do agree, it's a great time to get a 360, but I think it's a great time to get a PS3 too. They have alot of good looking exlusives coming soon too, and 500 bucks is better to pay than 600. I plan on getting a 60 GB PS3 in a couple weeks (hopefully they're still on the shelves) for 500 bucks.

i have 360 right now, im not a fan boy of anything. but i dont like the Wii. 360 is really the best system right now cuz its got the best games, and developers actually know how to use the hardware. but i guarentee in like 3 years, ps3 will kick 360's ass, and thats when people should start buying ps3's, until then its a waste of money.
I'm not trying to be a fanboy here, but my friend just sold his xbox 360 (he loved it) and bought a ps3. Now that I can look at both of them side by side, you really do get your money's worth with the 360: a hunk of plastic; while the ps3 is innovative (touch buttons, included wireless, etc.) It's sorta like comparing wood to steel (dunno if that makes any sense). But in the long run if you buy a xbox 360, you'll have to end up buying a fan for the system, controller chargers, online play, etc, while the ps3 has all of those already in the system with free online.
I live in Canada, and for some reason none of my friends have the PS3, but mostly all of them have Wii or X-Box 360... this is weird, but finally the PS3 is catching up to X-Box 360!
oh man i just had to read this one. love the fan boys getting up-in-arms. keep it up, my afternoon breaks would just be plain boring without your sad lonely rants!
this ain't a surprise for me, next year the 360 will become a piece of crap. People r just saving money to get a ps3( including all the ps2s owner). YA DIIIIG?????
