The wii sucks.... 360 is not the best consol but has all the "good" games on it... ps3 doesnt have problems (I have never had red ring of death in my 3 years with my 360...) but has almost no games worth remembering.. soo I would go with 360 any day.
Annual tally sees non-PC revenue rise 43 percent to new record; massive Wii, 360, PS3 sales see December top $4.8 billion; Call of Duty 4, Wii Play, Super Mario Galaxy among top 10 games of last year.
Following over two weeks of anticipation and prognostication, the annual game-industry earnings figures from The NPD Group are in. As widely predicted, 2007 was a record year for the industry, with $17.94 billion of non-PC hardware, software, and accessories sold in the US at retail. (NPD does not include PC game sales, nor does it include online revenue.) The number was a 43 percent increase over 2006's none-too-shabby tally, and set yet another record for the industry.
"The US games industry rose an astounding 43 percent in 2007 bolstered by strong performance in every product category," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. "While hardware sales realized the greatest percentage growth over 2006 due to the closely scrutinized console hardware transition, each category under the video games industry umbrella reached their own personal bests in terms of annual sales."
Indeed, 2007 was the first full year which saw all three of the one-time next-generation consoles on the market at the same time. The year saw 2.56 million PlayStation 3s sold domestically, bringing its lifetime-to-date total to 3.25 million units. Its older brother, the PlayStation 2, sold 3.97 million units to hit 41.12 million units LTD, while its smaller sibling, the PlayStation Portable (PSP), sold 3.82 million units during the year, moving 10.47 million units since its March 2005 debut.
Unsurprisingly, the year's most popular console was the Nintendo Wii. With 6.29 million units sold domestically in 2007, the console's cheaper price tag and mass-market strategy clearly paid off, bringing its US lifetime sales to 7.38 million. While impressive, that number is a mere 41 percent of the DS's massive 17.65-million-unit lifetime total, 8.50 million of which were sold in 2007--making it the undisputed top non-PC platform.
As for the Xbox 360, it sold 4.62 million units during the year, bringing the two-year-old console's US LTD total to 9.15 million units. Though it was hit by a billion-dollar hardware failure controversy, the console ended the year on a high note, selling 1.26 million units in December alone, just behind the Wii's 1.35 million-unit take for the month. However, the recently discounted PlayStation 3 also had a solid month, falling just 2,400 units short of the 800,000-unit mark.
"Both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 realized strong month-over-month hardware sales increases," surmised Frazier. "The 360 in particular seems to have benefitted from a killer slate of hardware-acquisition-driving content including COD4, Assassin's Creed, and Halo 3. ... [But] Nintendo has certainly been the belle of the hardware ball this year, capturing the top two spots for hardware units sales for the year with the DS followed by the Wii."
On the software side, it should come as little surprise that the year's best-selling game was Halo 3. With 4.82 million units sold during the year (742,000 in December), the game boasts a staggering 53 percent attach rate. Boasting a near-30 percent attach rate is the 360 edition of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which had 3.04 million in annual sales. Infinity Ward and Activision's first foray into 21st century combat was also December's top game with 1.47 million units. (The PS3 version of the game did not crack the top 10.) The only other 360 game to make NPD's 2007 top 10 was Assassin's Creed with 1.87 million units, 893,700 which were sold in December.
The Wii was also well-represented in NPD's top 10 games of the year. In second place was the tepidly reviewed Wii Play, which sold 4.12 million units during the year (1.08 million in December) thanks in large part to being bundled with a Wii Remote. In fifth place was GameSpot's Game of the Year Super Mario Galaxy, whose 2.52-million-unit-year-end haul was boosted by a 1.4-million-unit December. Pokémon Diamond was sixth with 2.48 million units, and Mario Party 8 placed 10th with 1.82 million. (Neither game was in the top 10 titles of December.)
Two PlayStation titles made NPD's 2007 best-seller list, Guitar Hero III (2.72 million annual,1.25 million December) and Guitar Hero II (1.89 million annual, December figures unavailable). However, both were for the PS2, with no PS3 or PSP games climbing into the top 10.
"If Halo 3 was the game of the year (in terms of sales), one has to recognize the tremendous success of the Guitar Hero franchise," said Frazier. "Guitar Hero games sold over $820 million at US retail, which is a record for any single franchise in any one year."

dude those are insane price amounts PS3 should stay at the bottom it sucks who likes it it just copies games from microsoft X-360 so it's gay and it wont make a killing. For Xbox 360 to many games but it is awesome:P:P:P:P:P:P:P:P
tylerrocks, you really made my day! This must be the most well-thought and constructive comment I have ever seen! hahah!
ps3 should stay that way there horrible! who likes it man. YES it has a blu ray player but if your a gamer how do you play with no games Sony can't compeat with Microsoft they just have too many games for xbox 360 every 2-4 weeks they have a games ps3 has nothing they just copy the great xbox 360 hit COD 4 it came out with xbox 360 first so thats why xbox 360 is way better than the ps3. WII wow i don't know why people like it. Its fun for a week then your done it. It has stupid games and its all kiddy dam i don't wat ur thinkin but it reallly sucks man like bad graphics horrible gameplay its just the motion that makes it fun. Don't waste your money with the wii with getting the stupid plastic remote controls. thats all i gotta say man oh ya forgot i new xbox is comin i don't know wat there goin to call it but man it must be great
Wish i could have all 3. bought the 360 but annoyed at how much stuff i gotta buy for it like the hd dvd drive wifi adaptor. 120 hard drive (bought mine b4 elite came out) the hdmi upgrade thing for HDTV. all in all i wish i would have known bout the elite or bought a ps3 would have saved a lot of money but would have missed out on halo 3, and GoW and Dead Rising. Damn you microsoft. Apple should come out with it's own gaming system. the "iplay" or whatever. stupid microsoft.
in response to your comment specnertaylor the ps3 has alot of good games, Ratchet and Clank, Folklore, Resistance, Uncharted i mean how many game can you play at once, but as far as multiplats go, i own stranglehold, and call of duty 4 and their fine, but in good time things come, i mean if you rush out an amazing library what do you have by the end, nothing
I don't really care about console wars, it's all the same to me. But please... people... STOP BUYING MADDEN!!!! RENT IT if you have a burning desire to play football. The good news is EA's flagship game is the only game that cracked the top 10. Hopefully EA will get the message soon that their games are trash!
ok not to be a ps3 hater ( in fact i really want one) but WTF!?!? i just took a look at the ps3 section here to determine if i was really gonna buy one and it came to the startled realization: the ps3 has NOTHING!!! omfg it has not a SINGLE really good game that i cant get on my 360. literally im not exagerating. doesnt anyone else notice this? i thought the ps3 had like a whole lotta really good games like the ps2 did but holy crap this is just sad. k im looking at the ps3 top games of all time list and only 3 games are ps3 exclusives and ninja gaiden sigma shouldnt really count cos its just a remake of the one for xbox. i really feel bad for all those ps3 fanboys. im not a fanboy by any means but i cant help but realize the 360 has tons of exclusives: gears, halo, forza, bioshock, and ps3 has resistance and warhawk? come on. also xbox live just totally outclasses the ps3s online multiplayer network. and for the record the wii is totaly pathetic unless every game is like totally innovative in the way it uses the remote, or they make a new mario or zelda every year, pansy wii gamers r just gonna get a whole tidal wave of crappy derivative games with inferior graphics.
4.62 Million 360s Sold. That's 1.5 Million New Customers that will get the Red Ring of Death. Welcome to the Club!!! I personally have not played my $130 copy of Halo Legendary Edition since Early OCTOBER!!! Not because I don't want to, but because Microsoft is TRASH. First I got the Red Ring of Death. Then My Halo3 Disc is bad (so they tell me) Then my Replacement disc was bad (so they told me again) My 3rd Replacement disc never came. My 4th Replacement disc was ordered Dec 26th. Still haven't received it. Yeah... I think I'm a PS3/Wii Fanboy Now.
mertron1: "i notice a lot of editorials play down the success of the 360 on many sites....trying to hype up the wii even though its not a true next generation machine...(and i'm talking about games...who really cares about some wand device type joystick..)....and even the ps3...yeah the 360 had a head start but lets face it...its done well..very well and has sold the most machines on the planet...we all know that...yeah the wii is catching up and may well overtake but what you'll notice in time is that the wii games that get release for the wii will become static again as they've now bought out all their main titles...(mario...mario...and errrr...zelda..again...)....what next....the 360 goes from strength to strength not just because of the flexability of the machine and top notch 'live content'....but because of the tripple A' games that will continue to arrive even now cross platforming...(devil may cry...final fantasy)......everyone who's a true gamer can see that...cause as we know that's what its all about...the games.....if ps3 does stage a comeback i will be surprised but it should'nt die...competition is good for the gamer but these sites and magazine's need to get real and praise where praise is due....i thank you" ^ Here's a fact for you 360 fanboy. 360 ONLY sells better in AMERICA than anywhere else in the WORLD. Fact is, PS3 and Wii outsell 360 everywhere else in the world. Get your facts straight. Read above. This news posted by GameSpot is based on US sales.
Nintendo sure is doing a nice job with the Wii... Now if they could get more thrird party titles they would be unstoppable. The PS2 sold a decent amount of units, proving enough people haven't jumped on the next-gen systems yet.
"buildar haha life is funny. If people could still buy original x box's they would be becuase they are less expensive and for many people cost is everything. The DS does well becuase its inexpensive and has a broad selection of games. Cost and game selection always factors in. Whoever gets the best combination will do well. Those that rely on one or the other will do less well. With the growth the industry is experienceing right now, everyone will do well untill something messes it up." what he said. totally right on.
yay for the 360! (and yes, i also own a PS3. it looks cool and plays pretty movies. but otherwise....)
Out of the 2.56 million PS3's sold in 2007, I'm willing to bet half of those were purchased just to watch blu-ray movies.

Halo 3 at about 4.8 million units, that's amazing.I loved the selection of exclusives for the 360 and the multiplatforms between 360 and PS3,it was a really fun year, rented a bunch of games and had fun with each one.Recently rented COD4 and Assassin's Creed, amazing games.Mass Effect is wow too.Halo 3 is addicting, but I've been enlightened a bit,COD4 is a BIT better, the campaign changed my life and the Xbox Live play was innovative...but a little worse than Halo 3 Live, but the campaign equals it out as Halo 3's campaign was confusing yet not disappointing and short like Halo 2.I think PS3 and 360 will outpace the Wii,but I don't know who the winner will be.DS will always be on top though,we know that......
Key phrase - non PC revenues..... Don't think PC game figures are going to be in the positive.... Also, 360 sales are lower now than the XBox was in the same timespan, and we know from above that PS3 cannot even match PS2 sales. Despite the above optimism overall, we can see the success is mostly around casual gaming machines (the Wii and the DS), retro gaming (PS2 still selling more than PS3) and huge interest/growth in retro gaming across all formats) and anything to do with non violent games (The Guitar Hero franchise on console and The Sims continuing dominance in PC gaming). This leaves, with the exclusion of Halo 3, a teenybopper hyped game (53% penetration - what else do you call it?!), hardcore violent gaming and the associated hardware (especially PC) on a downslide, slower for some (360) than others (PC) but a revolution is happening non-the-less.

yep ps3 is definately one of the main reasons for the success of blu-ray over hd-dvd..otherwise it would have fallen flat on its ass like it did the betamax way..lol...but then what does this tell you...the ps3 is a games machine....it has a built in blu-ray which you can play films on but once again it is a 'games machine'......sad state of affiars when sony are selling their console on the back of many customers who want a cheaper alternative to their own expensive standalone blu-ray machines.....its justa good way for kids to get their parents to buy one.
holy crap the DS sells a lot of units! i'm really happy for nintendo. it's good to see them doing so well. wish i could say the same for sony. it's really sad when your best selling hardware is the one thats seven years old. On the other hand, that really does say something about the PS2. Seven years old and still going strong. But whoever is selling the most units, we the gamers are the real winners because we get to play all those awesome games. now i'm off to go play the DMC4 demo!! yay!
It seems that the Wii console is doing better that the Wii games in terms of sales. I assume that Wii Sports is the main reason. Nice to see Nintendo doing so well after a couple of lacking consoles (in terms of sales).
@Acesion I am a big American fan as any other citizen, and I believe in our economy, but don't pull GDP numbers out of thing air. the USA has a purchasing power gdp of about 14 trillion USD. China has about 7 trillion. Japan has about 4 trillion, and Germany has about 3 trillion. Add russia, mexico, and hte UK and their combined GDP is a good bit over our great USA. Not to say our numbers aren't great, they just aren't as amazing as your letting on. Google the CIA world fact book to check the exact numbers.
Strange enough I think 2 or 3 million more PS3 consoles will get sold in the next couple of years on top of the regular game console buys as Blu-ray overtakes HD-DVD. The PS3 right now is the most reliable Blu-ray player on the market. Blu Ray players by themselves will be within $100 of the 40gig PS3 by the end of this year & getting the extra features( ,hard drive, gaming library, etc.,) could swing them into buying a system.
I don't find it sad that ps2 sales beat ps3s.Its impressive that ps2 can still attract buyers. The ps3 could follow the same lead.I think its being unfairly judged on price when most people don't know what exactly they're buying.
Our economy is not dieing, and not that the majority of PS1 and 2's sold where in America, if the PS3 cannot capture the American audience then they loose simple as that. People think Americda is in for hard times with the economy but truth is that America's GDP is more then Japan, China, Russia, UK, Germany, Canada, Mexico and Austrailia combined. meaning that If anyone has the money to buy video game systems its us. Anyways PS3 has a long road ahead of itself and as long as Tripple A games like Mass Effect continue to come out on 360 and B games like Uncharted come out on PS3, 360 will maintain its lead. If and this is a big if, if FF13, MGS and Killzone doesnt make PS3 sell 2x as much as the 360 next year then they have lost.
this gen is just getting started. The really good games didn't start to come out until after 2 or 3 years in the systems lifecycle. The next few years are going to be excellent for gamers, no matter what system(s) you own.
Uhhh....360 dying worldwide? It has three times the installed base of the PS3 right now truenextgen. I'm not counting out the PS3 by a long shot, but lets give credit where credit is due, the 360 is a major player and will continue to be just that for quite some time. Deal with it.
I guess Nintendo has succeeded in gearing their system towards the mass market of casual gamers. They've also thought of how to get non-gamers into the fray by making their system the most intuitive to play out there. While the 360 and PS3 have been making their systems more and more complex to play, the Wii is exactly the opposite. And with that they have gained new players out there who have thought that it was too confusing to hold up an X-Box or Playstation controller. Now that Nintendo has caught many many millions of gamers out there, they just have to come out with more games. Having more third party support will also play a major role in their success.
less than 1 year 2 years PS3 has 52 FPS'S 360 has 67 PS3 has 31 RPG's 360 has 34 PS3 has 31 racing games 360 has 33 x2.5 130 vs 67 77.5 vs 34 77.5 vs 33 Listen Truennext gen.com has it down. The future is not here yet. Its a future of 8 cells and HD, 1080 threw cable TV and Satalite. Its vary soon and moving into that. Its a future in which Blu Ray has already won. No system will do bad by 2012. But any guy over 30 "me" that knows any business. Knows You would be an idiot to not think the PS3 still should win this thing. You also have to take into affect that their best looking game, is running at 35%. And Madden and others even lower. So not only will time change around the PS3 to its advantage. So will the system, turning into the powerhouse graphics ho it is. Its so simple. In 2 years you have the cheapest High end Blu Ray player "which everyone will just have to have by than, is some form of Blu Ray in the pad to impress." Which also happens to be the most graphically powered gaming home machine ever, with some great games by than. While living in a full HD Blu Ray movie word. In a time in which HD is a need, not a luxury. But the US and gamespot and other gets paid to try and make it seem all different. If you dont believe me, watch those scion awards. And watch a Nathen Drake character get voted over by sub par mass effect characters. In whatever character award. How good was Uncharted. Well for one Mass effect was not even 1/100th of the game KOTOR was. And KOTOR was good, but not game of the decade. And AC was cool, and I just did a fan vid on it even. But brute honest! AC does not even come close to how cool Uncharted was as a 3rd person game. But I know for a fact 95% of people dont know that hands on. They just buy into the BS of what their told, or BS they read. And Why they would take a few bucks to kill whats already dying vary soon "economy" is beyond me? In fact their will be a full special on this late in the year "having to do with user and site interface with Mico," but they want to see what legally goes on first, before any special. Its not, that the 360 is in trouble. They wont do bad. They just wont finish anything but last. Heres the crazy thing to, as good as the numbers are. If we would have not did the whole lame down gaming thing. That many have been part of for the last 2 years. The numbers would of been much higher, and we would of been playing even way better games.
flyingdutchdog. I 100% agree. If you have a 360 already, there's no compelling reason to buy a PS3 as well, unless you can afford to. I've always maintained that the 360 currently has the best, most well rounded lineup of titles. However, if you are only buying one console I would recommend the PS3. The exclusives are a blast and the mulitconsole support has been great overall, I think it will have a longer lifespan you get Blu-Ray for the same price as the 360 and the hardware is rock solid. Finally, Home will address the shortcomings of the PSN over XBL, and free online play doesn't hurt. End of the day you're not going to be disappointed with either the 360 or PS3 if you can only have one, but I just lean towards the PS3 after owning all 3 consoles. The reason you'll see me defending the PS3 more is the amount of false information and general misconceptions surrounding the PS3. It's astounding. I think it does a disservice to gaming in general to perpetuate these myths. It's a good time to be a gamer, we should enjoy it. Man....look at pourya. I'd complain about his post, but I think it's better to leave it up. That's embarrassing. I hope for his sake English is a second language, because that's just sad. He sent me a message along the same lines. With all the "baby" talk I thought he was hitting on me.
HEY DARKRIDE66 YOU ARE A 3 OLD BABY?WHAT KIND OR RACE YOU ARE BABY?ALL I CAN TELL YOU IS THAT YOU ARE AT THE START LINE OF LIFE BABY,OK?
@Kenji_Masamune: darkride66 has been talking about myths and predictions (his reality). Well another myth that should be laid to rest is that Xbox is all FPS and PS3 is all RPG. Acccording to the number of games released and future releases here is the reality: PS3 has 52 FPS'S 360 has 67 PS3 has 31 RPG's 360 has 34 PS3 has 31 racing games 360 has 33 Not really enough of a difference to typecast either console into a niche of one or the other.
@darkside66 give it a rest now ... we know a fanboy when we continually hear the onslew of subjective interpretations. As far as good games for the PS3, that's subjective as well. I have a PS3 as well as a 360. I so much want to buy software for the PS3 to justify buying it, but alas, there are not that many to buy. If it is released on both systems usually the 360 version is better and that is a fact. Just enjoy your PS3 and don't worry so much about what system will win. PS: I think your prediction falls under the category of myth as well because I say so (see how silly that sounds).
TMontana1004 said "So can the myth about the PS3 surpassing 360 sales this year die now?" That's a prediction, not a myth. A myth would be something like "The PS3 has no good games". That's a myth. "Sony will continue to build a solid user base now that they've squashed the 360's year and a half lead in Europe and Japan." Prediction. See the difference?
Timbydude: you bought a store for a bunch of old games. So did your and everyone else's grandmother.
Also, I hope this doesn't give Nintendo a false sense of security; the Wii is still desperately in need of good games. It's got enough to satisfy right now, but we need some more very soon. I'm starting to wonder if I bought a store for a bunch of old games or if I bought a next-gen console.
All the people who say so much bad things about another system probably doesn't even own one to appreciate it's worth and fun games. While a systems success depends mostly on the amount of games available, including exclusives, it makes sense that one system may sell more than another. The reason the PS2 just dominated it's era was of course the mass number of games available. Instead of talking trash about another system, everyone should just say why they go with the system they chose, and that of course is because of the games. All the consoles out there are "made to play games!" So what if the PS3 can play blue-ray movies, that's just an added bonus because it uses Blue-ray discs as a medium for its games. So what if the Wii doesn't have outstanding graphics, even without the stupidly outstanding graphics the soul root of "fun and interactive" games are there. So what if the 360 has some very good exclusive games, you have to play it to appreciate it.
