No single-player-only games - EA Labels boss

Frank Gibeau says all of company's titles must include online, social elements to reach consumers; cross-platform integration a focus.

Electronic Arts has no plans for any single-player-only games from its studios, according to EA Labels president Frank Gibeau. A promotional pamphlet for upcoming conference Cloud Gaming USA had several comments from him and other gaming figures.

"I have not green lit one game to be developed as a single-player experience," Gibeau said. "Today, all of our games include online applications and digital services that make them live 24/7/365." The statement does not exclude games that are mainly single player, but makes it clear that at the very least efforts like Mass Effect 3, which had a campaign as well as online multiplayer and other social elements, are now the standard for EA.

Gibeau held up FIFA Soccer 13 as an exemplar of EA's cross-platform efforts, saying the company plans to add more support for interaction with its major franchises in browsers or on mobile devices. He said Madden NFL, Battlefield, and SimCity will receive similar implementations throughout the next year. Dead Space 3, a previously single-player only franchise from EA, will also include a full online co-op mode when it releases in February 2013.

No Single-player only games, yet you insist on owning a company like Bioware to fulfill your own greedy desires? Fuck you. If you're going to play in an industry already over-saturated with mediocrity, repetition, and needless filler content, than at the very least relinquish the developers who made a name for themselves with single-player gaming and let them go to a publisher that still has the common sense to maintain the integrity of the videogame industry. For the likes of Bioware, who's single-player exploits include Mass Effect,, Dragon Age, Knights of the Old Republic, and Jade Empire, I feel like they would be better suited working with a company like Bethesda and Zenimax than EA. The fact alone that EA doesn't condone non-multiplayer titles to be developed automatically eliminates HD remakes of Jade Empire and KOTOR 1&2, both series I have been holding out on for years to make a comeback. I can only hope that the KOTOR rights reside solely with Disney-Lucas and they can merely find another developer to remaster them (KOTOR 2 isnt an issue since it was done by Obsidian. I would love for them to remaster both since they specialize in RPGs.)

more moronic marketing. since the failed single player in me3 i certainly have not invested in new games from this fiscal ferret. anyone supporting this black hole of artistic freedom in the future can only blame themselves for contributing to the death of replay value.

Personally i don't care much for online gaming, but i find it laughable that EA pushes online so hard, yet is the only company that kills it's online servers after 2 or 3 years.

Any games that comes out with EA logo on it.  I will not buy it and look at it as a sign of abomination.  What Hekteur said is pretty self explanatory.  EA, you are making a bad decision, but then again, you guys at EA have a track record of making bad desicions.

Hey! Guys at EA, have you ever heard of this obscur game called "Skyrim" from this so underground "The Elder Scroll" franchise? Well, it's quite famous and totally not a hipster-underground thing. Skyrim, as a SP game,  sold over 10M copies. There's still plenty of people who enjoy playing alone, not getting the BS so many online players give.

This is a tragedy for gaming.  We need to boycott EA and help abolish their slavery of good development studios.  Don't fall for the tricks of the bloodsucking corporate leaches that are draining the life out of every EA game.  This is the death of story telling in games.  This is the push for annual releases with only 5 hours worth of narrative and endless repetition.  This is cheaper development cost and a major step backwards for gaming as an art form.

Help the gaming industry reform by boycotting EA until they cease to exist.  This will send a clear message to the industry that we gamers are not mindless cash cows looking for the next gaming fix.

I would say I'm a bit more than a casual gamer. I have a life outside of gaming but really enjoy escaping this crappy world as often as possible in an alternate virtual world.  I've been in clans, played casual, played competitive,  and have a good group of skilled gaming m8's :)  We all have the same complaints....the entire world seems to be run the same way, everyone you talk to can't believe the way things are run, yet it never seems to get any better. Are all these corporations run by aliens, wtf backass world are we living in.....wow

I loved the first and second sim city! (sinlge player games only.) The third was a horrible piece of junk!

Generals and zero hour single players was great. I loved playing online....until the game was hacked and unsupported...then you had to play only with fiends because the internet is full of angry, cheating, spoiled rude kids. I don't want to play with them...I still play the single player.

Kotor 1 and 2, loved them both. NO need to go online, hell i can play when my internet is down weeee....I would have payed EA for kotor 3...I had no desire to play an mmo so I passed on that crap..

BF3 I've been playing with a couple buddies just pubing and its horrible hehe..Its got some great game play and can be fun as hell. Its not bf3 though, its an arcade version of bf, dumbed down for hacking kids..You can't take away great parts of a past game, like commander, in-game voice, simple things like turning your head on a ladder..You just cant take away options and call it progress.

Make sof2 with better graphics and voice and you have a best seller.

Make zero hour2 with better graphics, voice and support the game..best seller!

Make KOtor3, simple good story single player. BEST SELLER!

We don't want to sign into 2 or 3 sites before we can play or dam games. Most people work a hard day and want to load up and play, not spend 15 minutes trying to find a server, wait for lag, while being tracked by 3 different companies.

 Dear Ea,

I did buy bf3...I would have bought Generals2 and the next sim city but alas you are going down a road I will not follow. I AM NOT ALONE, We are fed up!

Greed is not the answer world, in-fact just the opposite. Peace -=Z=-

If EA bosses rule the world, they will criminalize individual expressions so they could sell us soulless commie "group art". Exactly their vision for SimCity online - their red curtain empire where no-one get to play in their own corner without being PENALIZED.

Instead of just being a GAME company which make good games, they waste millions on lawsuits and advertising and lies and SQUEEZING LOYAL CUSTOMERS and KILLING JOY. And they act surprise when voted the most hated company in America?

Ya, this is absolutely DISGUSTING news. Sometimes I think EA is on a mission to deliberately destroy gaming.  Why does every game HAVE to be a social event. Why? You know what, you can keep Dead Space 3, and all your future crap. I'm no longer supporting you EA. I know It wont matter, atleast I'll sleep at night knowing I'm not feeding your monster. *middle fingure*

WTF! Really?!

First you cannot compare an RPG game to a sports game in terms of multiplayer and other social aspects. One is clearly defined by it the other not so much. This is just a clear lack of focus on the core aspect of a game. ME3 is a single player experience at it best, forcing people to play a tagged on multiplayer to improve their single player game success rate is BS!

Like @SavoyPrime the day single player games die out, is the day I stop gaming.

The problem with too many online experiences forced into games is that the developers are forced to work on something they may have not wanted to in the first place. Not only does that waste time and money, it distracts the developers from focusing on a good single player story. I do like co-op experiences, as those are usually just integrated into the single player story, but online competitive multiplayer is not fun to me.

The day single-player only gaming goes away is the day I give up gaming. The only time I play games with my friends is co-op in games like Borderlands. I don't care about meeting random rude jackasses and racist kids in multiplayer.

Seriously?  I HAVE TO PLAY SIMCITY WITH OTHER PEOPLE?!!?!?  ONLINE-ONLY?!?!?!  F.U.E.A.  Die like the Darwin-Award-stupid company you are.  You won't get a dime of my money from now on.  No Mass Effect, No Dragon Age, No SimCity, NO NOTHING.  Screw you and your stupid BS.  You are DONE.

After they decided to force co-op and multiplayer into Dead space I lost hope in that franchise. Here's hoping this terrible decision comes back to haunt EA in the future. The only reason I can see for a forced online only multiplayer option is so they can make used buyers and renters pay for a dastardly online pass.

{Personally I have never and will never bother with Dead space 2's tacked on MP mode as it had no reason to be in the game to start with.}

@hellrazorangel With all the death knell rumors and the apathetic statements being made by Devs and Publishers all the time i'd say that 10yrs almost feels over optimistic. Its almost like they want to kill gaming isn't it?

They want us to pay up but they are always looking for ways they can rip us off or do less work for more profit. Like they feel they are entitled to our cash but resent that they have to give us anything for it...

They don't even try to hide their apathy, what with all with the mistakes they make and the poor effort put into some massive games, plus the blatant cash grabbing. Then they have the nerve to get nasty, whiny and self righteous and condescending  when the people that have the nerve to invest faith and emotion attachment in their products complain about it. I don't know what the F**K is going on with gaming anymore.

Funny considering a single-player-only game that was green lit by EA also happens to be one of the best games they've ever published. That game is Mirrors Edge.

MMO's, multiplayer, social and co-op games are all just novel or bonus fringes of gaming. Some of us have had it with all the above. Some are okay with it, but are starting to realize the value of single-player again. The more games cut back on single-player, the more they can expect overall sales to drop.

This just in.....

EA continues to make choices that  makes sense to them but not to people that have a brain.  What will EA do next?  Will they continue to annoy people with their new ideas?  Will they just pull in the sheep with more nonsense?  Maybe they can have a color wheel and bring in the star child from ME3 to tell them what to do?

Find out in the next episode of......

What the F did EA say now?

Remember back in the early to mid 2000's there was that huge reality TV boom because it was cheaper for networks to do reality shows instead of paying script writers and such for normal shows?  I feel like that is what is happening now with games,  EA doesn't want to pay script writers and designers for SP so it is cheaper and easy to just come up with MP.

EA reps can make as many stupid statements as they want. Truth is, if they just ignore what the fans want and actually get into conflict with them, they'll be fighting a losing war.
