No single-player-only games - EA Labels boss
Frank Gibeau says all of company's titles must include online, social elements to reach consumers; cross-platform integration a focus.
Electronic Arts has no plans for any single-player-only games from its studios, according to EA Labels president Frank Gibeau. A promotional pamphlet for upcoming conference Cloud Gaming USA had several comments from him and other gaming figures.
"I have not green lit one game to be developed as a single-player experience," Gibeau said. "Today, all of our games include online applications and digital services that make them live 24/7/365." The statement does not exclude games that are mainly single player, but makes it clear that at the very least efforts like Mass Effect 3, which had a campaign as well as online multiplayer and other social elements, are now the standard for EA.
Gibeau held up FIFA Soccer 13 as an exemplar of EA's cross-platform efforts, saying the company plans to add more support for interaction with its major franchises in browsers or on mobile devices. He said Madden NFL, Battlefield, and SimCity will receive similar implementations throughout the next year. Dead Space 3, a previously single-player only franchise from EA, will also include a full online co-op mode when it releases in February 2013.
