wtf gamespot this article is a year old, nearly gave me a heart attack. Your falling off GS i might just start using IGN instead.
Wall Street Journal reports publisher does not expect to make a new home console announcement at this year's E3.
Despite a spate of recent industry rumors claiming the next generation of home consoles could be unveiled as soon as this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo in June, some publishers have begun to set the record straight.
During a roundtable with reporters at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas today, and as reported by the Wall Street Journal, Sony consumer products head Kaz Hirai told reporters that Sony is "not talking about a new home console now" and that the publisher doesn't plan to do so at E3.
The report also states that during the roundtable, Hirai said Sony has always viewed the PlayStation 3 as a product with a 10-year life cycle, and he sees no reason "to rush to replace it with a new system."
"Andy [House, Sony Computer Entertainment president and chief executive] is absolutely right in that we are not making any announcements at E3," Hirai said during the roundtable.
Last September, a source present at a "high level" meeting at Sony told Bitmob that the PlayStation 4 was due in early 2013; the following month, a Develop report suggested Sony was just entering the early development stage of PlayStation 4 software.
What the hell? Why is this YEAR OLD article on the top page? Scared the hell out of me for a second.
:) Guys this is a story from last year about last year's E3-- not this year. Let your heart not be troubled, mates. It would probably be best that GS removes the story from the top and get it further down in the archive.
Sony always announce new consoles at the tokyo Game show, if they are going to announce PS4 thats where it will be.
I don't know what to expect from the PS4 other than a probable high price tag and an unoriginal console name. "This just in, Sony releases the name for its PS4 successor...PS5"
@cubachino I would recommend when they do release not to buy one in the first few months. We all know how it was with PS3, they will release one that costs an arm and a leg and then a few months later release one cheaper and that runs smoother too.
SONY must think of a new proprietary media to intergrate into the PS4 to empty fanboy wallets first :D
blackace....What the are you saying? No matter that Microsoft or Nintendo have more sell´s than Sony, because in the end what matters is a good console, which is not damaged and not worth nathing like wii or xbox!
I think current generation hardware is good enough for a year or two as even with PC games there hasnt been a "huge" leap up in graphics/hardware needed as of late.
Personally, I'm fine with this. Definitely not prepared to shell out $400 or more for a new console when I think the PS3 still has about 2 or even 3 good years left in it.
@Hessieng it hasn't reached its full potential yet ... so why make a new one? ***************************************************************** Well, Naughty Dog thinks it has. They already said there wasn't much more power they could tap with the PS3 after releasing Uncharted 3. It's pretty much at it's peak now. People who keep saying "Sony doesn't need to bring out a PS4 for another 2-3 years, won't be saying that after the Wii u and XBox 720 gets released and have a huge lead on Sony once again." Sony will have to play catch up (again) and we already saw the results of that this generation. They are still dead last in software and hardware sales worldwide and this generation is just about over.
@johnners2981 I know that the X360 is older than the PS3 but you do know that they have different processers right. They both have different strengths and weaknesses. You know that they came out seperatly but have been in development for years before hand and a company just can add features on the fly of a year. Developers have to gear the games and make different adjustments for the separete systems. Take ninja gaiden the xbox has twice as make enemys as the ps3 but the ps3 graphices are better. You cant blame AAA+++ developers for trying to cater to the strengths and weaknesses of each system and for the systems not being able to handle the output of a computer. Fact of the matter is we do need new systams and they are getting dated.
Just remember, if you're gonna be late to the party again you can't afford 3-4 years of being way behind quality/framerate on cross platform games again. I'm assuming devs have a good grasp of the cell architecture now, but ps4 really needs to be the best performing machine right out of the blocks this time, especially if the price tag is more than the xbox like before.
when ever the ps4 come out with so much better tech (example blue ray) the next xbox and wii u will want to copy the ps4 or make a new console sooner.
Problem is, is that Sony probably won't afford to bring out the PS4 as of this moment, as they're currently putting most of their eggs into a basket with PS Vita. But I honestly don't think that they can allow Nintendo to get a huge head start next generation in Japan, either, because that's where it's home to both Nintendo & Sony. They made that mistake with Vita. If Wii-U sales are high, I doubt that 3rd party developers will pay attention towards PS4. So Sony will have to do something soon. The only company who can get away with not bringing out their next console in Japan so soon is Microsoft, because the main Xbox brand market is the U.S.A.
When they announce it is really no big deal, but they are absolute retards if they let Microsoft push their next system first again. @GarGx1 Couldn't agree with you more.
I hope they wait a couple of yrs atleast before they launch the PS4 these systems are getting really damn exspensive and I will be buying both as Ive always done so I need the Xbox720 to come out soon and then the PS4 later so i can save the money inbetween the launch dates to buy both... Can you imagine the price point on these new systems... its going to be astronomical...
Good, dont need a PS4 lol, focus on quality games for the system. 2011 was a gr8 year for games, make 2012 even better.
all i know is im not getting any younger. what if i die before the PS4's released? 4yrs is a long time. think about all the troops that won't ever see a PS4. saying that u should put a hold on the future is nonsense. thats like saying "im cool with my scooter, i don't need a hovercraft". i would welcome a new console every 2 years if it was actually something new & worth doing. i think PS3 could use some major improvements, or at least try to start producing some better games for it. idk if all the game developers are brain dead or what. there's literally 2 games i like for the PS3 or that're worth paying more than $20 for. i might have to look into buying a better PC to plug into my tv.
Okay with me....that way they'll still focus on quality games for the PS3 and we don't have to pony up the cash for a newer version just yet.
So November 2016 before the next Playstation makes an appearance. Is that really a good idea with nextbox most likely out next year and PC's already 10 times more powerful than this gens TV games.
No need to rush sony... PS3 still got a lot of steam left and still so many great games coming out this year so I aint in a rush for a PS4... Just make sure PS4 is a quality console and give it the time it needs to make it the best. When GTA5 comes out... lets just say take your time.
1 thing to count on from sony`s E3 shows is......9 out of the 15 games they show wont be out till the next year or later.... and most the times the wait isnt worth it all...
dont really blame them..... i mean they havent won a E3 in years.. if they take the ps4 news into this years E3 they will lose again to ms with its news of the next box.. they better save ps4 news for TGS or something
Obviously there is no PS4. Why would anyone think there would be? - Condsidering sony's playstation is far more advanced technologically than the other consoles, I wouldn't expect to hear that they are even thinking about a new console for 2 years.
as i heard at wiki that ps4 or xbox both of them will have CPU that make more than 9Ghz,however this cpu cost a lot of money and need more experimental and time to do so.in these days cpu like xenon 3Ghz need a lot of care to be in the best condition then at least it will cost how about 1000$ at least ,so How in the god name they will make a cpu in these days for game console that has cpu more greater than Xenon 3Ghz in under 999$ . i think i give lil description that 8th generation of gameing consoles need more time.
therealsig Posted Jan 12, 2012 8:17 pm GMT -12 It would be really dumb of Sony to announce (or want to announce) a new console just because Microsoft or Nintendo will. The PS3 is a powerful machine and the hardware will not need to be updated for a long time. The only reason Microsoft and Nintendo are announcing new consoles is because they actually NEED to progress with the needs of the entertainment/media market. ************************************************************* You're not serious are you? The PS3 technology is miles behind what the PC offers in power, speed and graphically capability right now. If Microsoft uses future technology for their next XBox for the end of the year or next year and the PS3 is still on the market, it will be way beyond the power of what the next XBox brings. The Wii U will be as powerful if not more then the PS3. Microsoft wants to own the entertainment room. They want to be able to provide games, movies, music, TV, social apps, social games and OnDemand everything. Whatever you need for entertainment should be just a click or voice away. Seriously, they don't even want the XBox to ever be turned off.
Sony will be left behind again. lol!! Expect the PS4 in 2014. By then the XBox 720 and Wii U will have sold well over 10 million units. Hopefully by then Microsoft will have bought a couple Japanese gaming companies and either Activision or EA. That's the only way they can compete in Japan and continue to own the U.S. market.
@BH14 More processing power in the next generation doesn't just mean better graphics. It also means better physics, and that will affect gameplay in all kinds of ways.
i still look at ps3 as a new console. i don't see any reason why sony should release ps4 anytime soon. there are still great games coming to ps3, i don't think we need a ps4 right now. personaly, i'm happy with my ps3 and i'm not considering buying a new console (ps4) in the next few years. still many great games to play.
@ABEzilla116 oh yeah without doubt, the kinect will be around for a while yet. the Wii u looks fascinatingly different doesn't it. I have to say Nintendo have some really innovative idea's. I only had a Wii briefly and it was well... different couldn't get used to the visuals!!, i can't wait to see what mario and mario kart will look like in 1080 and the controller looks mad!! i like the idea you can take the controller and carry on playing, if im right, is really cool. I think sony will ship the ps4 2014, they ll announce it christmas this year. Usually they have a 10 year window.

Yes, Sony has promised a 10 year lifespan for the PS3, never did they say that it wouldn't overlap the span of the next system.
Xbots the reason why Microsoft sells so many consoles in the 1 year of Launch-2012 was because of RROD. People kept by new ones in the first 3 yrs.
