I said this would happen 2 years ago. Micro$oft knows its a BS gimmick and wouldn't let their trusted franchises use it. Kinect is a waste of money and Micro$oft knows it.
Franchise director claims 343 would not try to "shoehorn" motion controls into new shooter, says Microsoft has hired former Call of Duty devs, but Halo not gunning to topple that series.
Halo 4 will not support Kinect for gameplay. Speaking to CVG, Halo franchise director Frank O'Connor explained that 343 Industries' new shooter is a core game that is best suited for traditional gamepad controls.
"Halo is a core game series, and more than many others is directly linked to the muscle memory of holding an Xbox controller, going back as far as the days of the Duke on the first Xbox," O'Connor said. "Kinect is a logical extension of the UI, and with regards to some of the sci-fi themes we're actually pretty excited about it, but not for the controls. That's not what it's for, and we would never try to shoehorn that into our game."
Though there will not be Kinect support for Halo 4 itself, O'Connor said Xbox Live application Halo Waypoint, which can be launched through Halo 4, will work with the motion control technology. This was not detailed.
During the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Microsoft confirmed that all first-party Xbox 360 games would utilize Kinect in some way. It is not clear if this development mindset has since changed.
Elsewhere in the interview, O'Connor claimed that Halo is not out to topple Activision's behemoth Call of Duty series. He said though Microsoft has hired former Treyarch and Infinity Ward developers, and those staff are bringing "some of their habits" to Halo, the two franchises are intrinsically different.
"We haven't tried to chase that tail," O'Connor said. "[Call of Duty games are] good for specific reasons, and Halo is good for a different set of specific reasons. I think the closest we've come to that conversation about Call of Duty, is that we wanted to have an amazing player progression experience that wasn't just aesthetics."
Halo 4 is due out only for Xbox 360 November 6 worldwide. Development on the project recently came to a close, with the game now headed to certification before mass production. For more on the title, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.
I am not disappointed about lack of kinect support. I would only play with a controler anyway sooo....
Good for them. At least they kinda got the idea of how to make their game not suck. Halo 4 is meh, but hiring CoD people to make anything is pretty much cancer for your game. They'll try to add soviets and zombies XD.
Ki who? Kill yourself. I don't care about this stupid gimmick. It is only good for sports. What I hate about it is, you're playing make believe. Gimme some body vibrators or something every time I punch or shoot. That would be nice. It feels like I'm a schizophrenic when I use this Kinnect crap, unless I work out with it. I just can "Konnect" an imaginary world with this gimmick. It sucks. I need to feel pain. I love my traditional controls and I love the vibration on them for effects. They need some vest for feel or something. Then I'll buy it. Next Gen will fix this.. But for now.. HALO 4 IS BEAST. COD? SCREW COD.
@erix43 You are aware that you just asked for "body vibrators" because you "need to feel pain"...but other than that, I don't question your judgement
I have to say, sweeping my hand around to control the interface of Halo Waypoint, sounds pretty cool X3 Just like in the game :3 I don't have a Kinect yet though. I'm sure they'll go cheap sooner or later.
@andrew_ribbons new one will come out soon, dont bother with this kinect if ur going to get it at all.
This will probably be the best thing about the game. I am not saying this because I think it won't be good, I mean it's Halo and has a legion of rabid fans, I say it because of the wonderful short history Kinect has had so far. Kinect and the Move seem so dead to me I really almost forgot about them until I saw this.
the Halo 4 Vs COD 8 sales battle might be more interesting than the actual COD 8 game its self
Good, I'd rather play halo the way it's meant to be played. Don't need to anything that doesn't belong, to it.
So, MS forces kincet into games that don't need it like Forza. They MAKE EA/Bioware put it into Mass Effect, but they don't put it into their own franchise game????
Does that bug anyone else, or is it just me????
That is a very good point.
Really don't see why simply having the option of Kinect in a game is a bad thing for those who are interested.I have Forza 4 and really never felt i "needed" a Kinect. But for AutoVista, i admit that kinda is cool. But only if you've already got one kicking around. Would never buy a Kinect just for THAT hehe.
@kungfuj0 Not just you. You actually saved me from posting the same type of comment!
Although clunky and inefficient, Voice commands were in games last gen and this gen with a mere cheap headset, easy peasy. No need for an overpriced beta Kinect camera.
Just playing, I do not mind. This game is better without it. Although, if it was an option and for some features, I would not mind, either.
good call, kinect is one of the worst add-ons for a console iv ever seen.. goes down with the power glove.
Wow. I just got about 10% happier that I pre-ordered Halo 4. Game looks awesome btw. I've been playing modern military tactical shooters for ever, mostly Battlefield Bad Company 2 and BF3. Didn't get hooked on Reach. I'm really looking forward to this one though.
"He said though Microsoft has hired former Treyarch and Infinity Ward developers, and those staff are bringing "some of their habits" to Halo, the two franchises are intrinsically different."
Explains why COD keeps being brought up with regards to 343's first solo game, Halo 4.
Kinect doesn't belong anyways, it's a big Beta test for Kinect 2 HD. It was also sold with over a billion dollars in marketing and 360 kinect bundles worldwide. It's going nowhere fast, and it was overpriced to begin with.
The idea of Kinect (especially for Halo) is just as bad as the notion that GFWL would be benificial.
Good call, it is reassuring to know that someone out there is still making good decisions.
Incorporating Kinect would definitely be seen as the Microsoftification of Bungie's franchise, and would not help gamers trust 343.
The thing that bugs me about Kinect is that people see it as "motion controls." Sure, Halo doesn't specifically need motion controls, but Kinect offers more than that. What about voice? That couldn't possibly make sense in Halo?
Having said that, Kinect hardware is pretty limited and a lot of the ideas I've had for integrating Kinect into games *without making it the sole control scheme* would probably work better on the next-gen console with Kinect 2, things like eye tracking and body language monitoring.
