Sony exec says next-gen platform will not support current-gen controller, but existing Move inputs will be compatible.
DualShock 3 controllers will not work with the PlayStation 4, though current-generation PlayStation Move controllers will. Sony president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida confirmed the news this week during a roundtable session in New York City attended by GameSpot.
"No, [the PS4] doesn't support DualShock 3," Yoshida said. "But it does support PS Move."
During the PS4 announcement presentation this week, Sony-owned developer Media Molecule showed off a technology demo where players used a PS Move controller to sculpt 3D objects.
As for the PS4's new DualShock 4 controller, it includes a front-facing touchpad, a new Share button, a built-in speaker, and upgraded rumble functionality, among other additions.

I am not surprised at all. And I don't understand why others are. The PS2 controllers not compatible with the PS3 (cuz of the wires). So, maybe there's a lot more to the DualShock4 than it seems, that would make it difficult for compatibility. We haven't even seen the hardware for crying out loud. There may be some extra features we don't know about.
This where they make their money. It's why cell phone carriers change their charging inputs every so often, they get a high margin sales boost.
This sucks royally because the ps3 controllers are already expensive as it is, so im pretty sure ps4 controller will be even more espensive. But, i think some third party hardware will easily resolve that.
Considering the level of technology in the PS4 this is a bit of a surprise. Nintendo, with their comparably less powerful consoles has managed to allow older controllers to be used with 2 generations now (Gamecube Controllers into the Wii and Wiimote into the Wii U) which has pretty much removed any requirement to buy new controllers for owners of the previous consoles. While the jump in technology from the PS2 to the PS3 (and the Xbox to the Xbox 360) was pretty big, its understandable that new controllers were needed (if only to support wireless controllers) but the PS3 controllers are pretty much the same, minus that share button and the oddly placed touch pad (were there any other major differences?) so why not just make them usable with games that don't need the new bits and simply give the gamers the option to choose? they are going to get a DS4 controller with the console anyway so its not like they will be using exclusively DS3 controllers. keeping the DS3 controllers for local multi-player would have been a more useful way to go.
LOL not sure who expected them to be compatible anyway? Isn't it usually a given that you get different controllers for different consoles?
This makes perfect sense and isn't surprising at all. Not sure why people would even think that the current controllers should be compatible with the new console when they lack many of the input functions. Common sense, really.
So Sony has apparently COMPLETELY forgotten their previous console then is what this means? It doesn't support the controllers, it doesn't support any of the games (unless it's through their stupid download streaming service exclusively). Great decision making people.

I didn't expect ps3 sixaxis controller support as peripherals is still one of the most profitable sectors. Also in order to get faster adoption of the new controller for developer support best to shed the old one completely, even in regards to multi-player.
I look forward to using the new controller, it looks like it will feel and play alot better. I still wish the thumb sticks were not in the same plane but hopefully they will come out with two versions one in the same plane and one more like MS's.
This isn't surprising, but I hope that the new DualShock 4 is also compatible with the PS3. It would be really nice to be able to play PS3 games with what looks like non-broken, concave triggers and better ergonomics.
Why is anyone surprised by this? The PS4 can't even play PS1 games, why would it support an old controller? Backwards compatibility is now a premium service.
@istuffedsunny they said no PS3 support no word about ps1 but if psp runs ps1 games, it will be a bad move not to support them even if they add support after launch
You know the sucker bets in a casino--the insurance bet in Blackjack and the proposition bets in Craps? The PS4 is shaping up to be the sucker bet of the video game world. It offers absolutely nothing worthy of purchase that the PS3 doesn't already have.
2 Like @obsequies Obviously the touch pad went over you head ... I'm sure every PS4 games will use the touch pad which need the Dualshock4 ... anyway backward comptatible controler is something rare that few consol offert.
@Coco_pierrot @obsequies obviously touch pads have gone to your head, its going to barely be used. Plus not EVERY game will be forced to used this gimmicky thing. Therefore it should be able to use the ds3 just like you could use a non dual shock controller on a ps2.
@obsequies @Spartan_418 share button is something that all games will use, dualshock 3 does not has it, that's one example why it makes sense. PS3 supported DS2 but there's no official usb adapter so it's not native

I like the new controller I think its great they kept the stuff that works and added but didn't force anything that's gimmicky but I can admit that the touchpad is a feature and not a neccesity for improving the playability of the game, its not a thumbstick and you would have to be a moron to think it is. This touchpad will be used for a majority of the large games that ARE NOT PORTS for the first 3 years of this system in small pieces of the games. Then it will barely be used at all. Completely denying any connectivity between the ps3 controller and the ps4 when playing the games that do not fully utilize the touchpad is a very bad idea..it can be done but the main reason they are doing it is to sell ps4 controllers. I'm a sony fan, I like sony's hardware because they make quality products but I can recognize that they are doing this to sell controllers. They didn't need to completely disable ds3 support. Devs could have easily put a sticker on the back of games that REQUIRED touch pad controls Don't even get me started on the motion control move light and the share button.

You have no evidence of that, we don't yet know how games are going to use the touchpad.
And the touchpad isn't the only new feature, the DualShock 4 also has the light bar at the front, improved Sixaxis sensor, and the Share button. We shouldn't expect PS4 games to work without any of those features.
Let me get this straight. The PS4 will cost estimated $400 to $600 dollars. Any PS3 games played on a PS4 will presumably have to be bought over again or maybe pay for PS Plus every month. None of the games at the Playstation 4 show seem like they would require a touch pad or light wand but you will have to buy the new DS4 controllers even though a DS3 controller should work just as well.
The PS4 already has FAIL written all over it.
Is this surprising? Only a very few times over history have controllers been forward compatible.
When has the controller from any previous gen system worked on the next gen system?
....I mean... literally..ever?... and don't say WiiU.. I'm talking about a console people actually own.

I think the Dualshock 1 worked on some games for the PS2, but not ones that used the analog buttons.
But that's about it. It hasn't happened very often.
Xbox->360 no.
PS2 -> PS3 no.
NES->SNES no.
SNES ->N64 no.
N64 -> Gamecube no.
And so on.
@obsequies And I'm sure you'll be able to use the Dualshock 3 with unauthorized hack peripherals from china too. So why complain?
@Thanatos2k @bio-hazardous @mwmars ps2 controllers work on the ps3 with a 2 dollar adapter from china, you can also use gamecube controllers on the ps3 with a usb adapter, atari has quite a few controllers that are backwards compat...and same with the master system/genesis. Back when 9 pin controllers were the rage they were even cross platform compatible
@mwmars Also I'm not 100% sure but I remember my original DualShock to work with the PS2. I may be wrong, someone could clarify this.

Sigh....guess I won't waste my time with any of these consoles if they are all going to be using mandatory motion controls. I don't give a **** about politically correct ways to play video games.

I'd like to remind everyone that DualShock1's worked on PS2's. I also would like to remind everyone that in fact the DS2 had extra functionality the DS1 didn't have: namely pressure sensitive buttons. Obviously for the games that used pressure sensitivity a DS1 wouldn't work but in all other contexts it was fine.
Nothing is different in this scenario except for sony's greed and the fact that I won't own a PS4.

Let me also preface this by saying that I am not saying that your conclusion is wrong: "that Sony is greedy" - but my God you REALLY generalized and omitted a host of possible exceptions, possible explanations and exemptions.
I'd rather use those small close to the side dial buttons for start and select than share in all honesty, I don't really see how the touch pad would substitute for that (if that is where those buttons have gone - if anyone has spotted them please do let me know), hardware buttons FTW!
2 Like So in other words, someone who has no interest in social media (like me) will still have to pay more for a more complicated controller with a button that they're never going to use.
Plenty of developers have marginalised single-player gamers by insisting on sending resources to develop needless multiplayer modes ... and now Sony seems determined to kill us off with a single button on the controller. It's hard to believe how hard I defended Sony at the start of this generation. Let's hope the other console developers don't follow suit.
@JoeAdvanced or pc :)! not hating on the Wii U but.. nintendo is a different experience than say xbox/ps/pc they are great though they stand out by themselves (in a good way)
Sleeping Dogs was already announced for Wii U. Imagine the people who go to gamestop to pre-order PS4 and findout Sleeping Dogs is already on Wii U.
