No DSiWare transfers to DSi XL

Nintendo confirms device-tethering software DRM system used by current DSi will force buyers of new handheld to repurchase all previously bought DSi Shop DLC.

Last year, Nintendo confirmed that DSiWare games bought from the DSi Shop were tethered to the handheld they were downloaded onto. This DRM practice means that games bought on a particular DSi were locked to said device and would have to be repurchased at full price if owners buy a new DSi. DSiWare games include such titles as WarioWare Snapped!.

Sunday's launch of the DSi XL raised the prospect that Nintendo might offer some sort of solution to let players transfer their DSiWare content to the larger-screen model or download it again for free. No such luck, according to a Nintendo of America representative.

"No, the games and applications are specific to each system, not each user," a spokesperson told GameSpot.

The forced repurchase of DSiWare content is unique amongst the current generation of dedicated gaming devices. Games bought for the PSP and PlayStation 3 via the PlayStation Store can be re-downloaded for free, as can games bought on Xbox Live Marketplace. However, if an Xbox 360 is replaced and its hard drive attached to a new console, the new console must be constantly connected to Xbox Live for the downloaded games to function outside of demo mode. New Xbox 360 hard drives also come with a transfer cable that allows players to move content from one hard drive to another.

Actually in response to some of the messages why Nintendo has been recently releasing so many versions lately is because of another competitor that has been taking so much market share away from both Nintendo and Sony, the Ipod/Iphone, and Ipad. These devices offer good motion and touchscreen games for $1.99 to 10 a game. That certainly beats $40 a game.

DRM has always been bad news. This is a perfect example. While there might be a debate over weather or not you "have to" or "don't have to" upgrade from a DSI to a DSI XL, you cant argue the fact that if your DSI is lost stolen or damaged, that you should be forced to buy the downloaded game over again. If you drop your DSI on the ground, have it run over by an 18 wheeler, then have it tossed around in a hurricane, then struck by lightning, before finally being hurled into a volcano, you lost your DSI, but your library of physical games are safe (since they aren't all stored on the DSI). It is an insult to those people who bought the DSI downloads after the injury of losing their DSI. Not good business Mr. Nintendo. Not at all! Its also why Digital download stuff really can't be trusted, and why hardcopy materials (Carts, CD's DVD's etc) still is the best way to go.

In that case, I wont be buying a 'DSi XL'. Get with the times Nintendo, we're not made of money.

i bought an XL and learned this the hard way! Total BS move Nintendo!!!

I bought a DSi last year, found its build quality lesser than the DS lite so not like I've been particularly thrilled with it anyhow, but news like this is going to make me think long and hard before I buy any future DLC (spent $10 total so far, so not like re-purchase at this stage would break the bank). I simply fail to understand what they are thinking. With their Club Nintendo, they even already have the option of linking your DSi to the club account, ditto for the Wii, so why isn't that enough to enable transfer - not like they don't know what you've already purchased under this system? I simply can't imagine the revenue from game re-purchase (not that there's been much released worth paying for anyhow) is going to offset the lost revenue from people NOT purchasing games because of this asinine policy.

conpanbear 5 pts

When the DSi was released, there wasn't much incentive to "upgrade" from the DS Lite. Now that the DSi XL has been released, there is even less incentive to upgrade. Any tech-savvy person (which I assume all ye who roam GameSpot must be!!) would consider holding off on the DSi XL for the release of the 3DS in the not-too-distant future. I'm surprised Nintendo bothered to release these hardly-differing consoles in the first place.

Therizah 5 pts

This is ridiculous, the release of this system and DSI are too close. Couldn't they just wait a few more months and release this, without releasing the DSI? I'm glad I didn't buy a DSI, and that instead I got a PSP.

@ todd 19662 Every re-iteration of the Nintendo DS starting with the DSi is a ripoff, but the PSPgo is actually good for people looking to buy their first PSP because they have no UMDs to worry about.

Beto884 5 pts

@ FlameBeast4000: yes it is exactly buying the same games, because indeed, screens are bigger, but it doesn't mean they have better resolution, it's still the same 256 x 192 resolution, so in a bigger screen it's definitely not nicer nor clearer picture.

LordMursarus 5 pts

nintendo... how could you be so greedy?

FlameBeast4000 9 pts

Technically, buying the games on the DSiXL isn't exactly like buying the games on the DSi...for the same price you get a much larger and nicer picture. If you've already bought some games on your DSi and want a DSiXL, just keep the DSi and all the games on it. That way you still have the one copy of each game you bought, and you can go buy an XL. If you want to play them on the XL, buy another copy.

I'm 28, have quite a bit of money to my name, and have owned almost every GameBoy and DS system since the original ... GB, GB Pocket, GB Color, GB:Advance, Advance SP and, skipping the original DS, a DS-Lite. Unless Nintendo changes and apologizes for this incredibly greedy policy, I will never buy another Nintendo product. Not for me, not for my future children ... I finally have a reason to switch to the in-many-ways-superior Sony PSP.

todd19662 5 pts

I am glad i read this article , because i have bought a few games for my dsi which i think is a great system but having to buy them again if my ds quits is robbery on nintendos part . not only would i have to buy another ds but also spend hard earned money on something i already own. this is the simple reason i hope the dxl fails (not only because its a rippoff) but too many companies are doing the same thing to suck more money out of us, the psp go is a perfect example why the hell would i download and pay for the games (umd) that i still own, and they were not cheap , just throw them away i guess. very little from dsi ware has been vey good but some were classics . I will not buy another dsiware game and deffinetly not another dsi until nintendo gets their head out of their ass and quits being so damn GREEDY!!!!!!!

ausgamer529 5 pts

nintendo is just not trying to fix this problem that will lead to the psp to rise from its grave

foveroula 5 pts

Leave it to Nintencco. At least the PSPstore is linked with your user account. Re: Zoravar7 that's the 1st thing i tried. It doesn't work. They are really really ticking this lady off. I love my new DSiXL but this is thumbs down in my book. lol they made the larger console for adults so they can suck up all our hard earned $$$$$$$$ fuiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii frack

Madrak_Arakeen 5 pts

Oi...so that's what I have to look forward to when I move on to the next Nintendo console. I can't believe what I'm hearing. Here's hoping that enough complain that there's change. But I doubt it. There goes all that money plunked into VC and WiiWare titles.

To quote James Rolfe, What were they *thinking*?!

epicsephiroth 5 pts

Haha, profit off the weak-minded.

arrohon 5 pts

Not as bad as the PSP remakes where the price is jacked up way to much when you get less than before...

Zoravar7 5 pts

I'm not an expert (because i've never done it) but can't you use the data management screen under the settings to move the game onto an SD card then take it over to the DSi XL (assuming it has a SD card slot)?

TeenGamer92 5 pts

I only have like one or two things from the DSi store, and I have to admit that they really suck. And I'm not planning on getting a giant version of my DSi any time soon. But you'd think they'd fix this somehow.

Beto884 5 pts

I own a DSi, I haven't bought anything from the DSi store, I won't buy the DSi XL and certainly I won't be buying anything from that crappy store. Why would I pay $200 for a 1 inch screen difference? Please, Nintendo guys are pushing way too much their luck of big fans following them. Actually, when I saw DSi XL it reminded me of something......the iPad! why would you want it when you have a perfectly portable iPod Touch???? or when you can buy one. Anyways, as iPad has been called iFail, I now declare the DSi XFaiL, hope it fails at selling.

Pacman_Toad 5 pts

Nintendo has pissed me off for the last freaking time!!! Might as well bust out a NES or Nintendo 64 console because the crap DRM policies never bothered people when these consoles were around

beny_pimpster 6 pts

lol hahaif my ds fat do die well its has lots of cracks at the moment...so almost....ill just probably get a lite cause its cheaper or dsi at best or xl depends cause i only got the fat so it doesnt concern me much

Adam_the_Nerd 8 pts

UGH. DRM. I'd only ever get this cause a big screen would be wonderful, however I"d break the bank so I'll just hang on for the 3DS.

wiiplay1 5 pts

That's just another reason to not get a DSi XL. The only difference is that the screen is bigger. It just makes for more pixelated games. Apparently, Nintendo isn't too dedicated to keeping customers.

leeko_link 66 pts

I could see why Nintendo didn't do this but I also could see why many gamers had complaint about it (me included). Seriously Nintendo just let everyone create an account so they'll shut the f*** up.

thps48 5 pts

Another good reason I don't give a **** for the upcoming 8 DS's. :D Also, if anyone's thinking about making a meme comparing the DS to Heidi Montag, I rather you don't. Actually, I guess I would; I'm amazingly bored... XD

Seriously stupid move by Nintendo ...as I said it before and I'll say it again I hope DSi XL flop.

Lol. Nintendo just can't get the hang of online. Gamecube era, i understood; THIS, is unforgivable.

this is so damn ridiculous Nintendo!!!!

Could easily be rectified with an online Nintendo account which registers your purchases.

really simple concept... no transferring... no purchasing! if people all stated this to Nintendo, they would quickly back down.

Nintendo failed hugely. I wish our copyright laws were more lenient and protected the consumer more. The US can be so stupid.

they know they can get away with it as 90% of their fans are mindless sheep,I like their games as much as the next guy but this is stupid,I wouldnt even except this if the Emperor himself decreed it

the Wii and DSes are lovely system, but so far the have both managed to fail with DLC and the Wii's online still fails.
