[UPDATE]: this rumor turned out to be actually true, a new revision of the 3DS with bigger screens called 3DS XL was unveiled on June 22 with, look for the news
E3 2012: [UPDATE]: Nintendo denies Nikkei report that a supersized 3DS model is due to be announced at E3 conference tomorrow.
Nintendo will show off a new model of its 3DS handheld console at its E3 conference tomorrow, according to a Nikkei report, as translated by Andriasang.
The model will be one and a half times bigger than the current design, with a 4.3-inch display. Launch could be as soon as this summer in North America, Japan, and Europe, says Andriasang.
The release of a larger 3DS around 18 months after the 3D handheld's initial release in Japan resembles the launch of the Nintendo DSi XL, introduced a year after the camera-adding DSi handheld.
Look for the unveiling of the 3DS XL alongside all the Wii U news at the Nintendo conference tomorrow morning.
[UPDATE]: Nintendo responded to the report by posting a counter on its Japanese-language investor relations site. As translated by Andriasang, the 3DS maker says the Nikkei report was based on conjecture and full of errors. Expect to find out more (one way or the other) at the Nintendo conference Tuesday morning.
Sigh... This was what I've been waiting on to actually buy the stupid thing. Come on Nintendo, I want the second circle pad before I invest.
@endorbr dude just get a circlepad pro the thing is just 20 bucks and it actually makes the system more comfortable to hold.
laughs yeah gamespot needs to get their freaking facts streight first. clearly this was bogus. Way to go yet again...and the news converage from e3 so far is pretty poor. from gamespot though maybe its cuz this years e3 news kinda sucks.
if a new 3ds is to be unveiled it should be one with dual analog sticks, it just make better sense. Why in heaven sakes would they make a bigger 3ds, especially when we currently have to buy a additional device to make the system have dual sticks.......only the extremely ridiculous persons would opt for such a venture of a larger 3ds with the same components as the original.
This rumor would had been true if the Nikkei report and Andriasang know how to shut their mouth about the info. Now that ppl knew of the rumor, Nintendo choose not to introduced the re-design and save it for later. We know Nintendo usually going to make a re-design handheld around two or three years after the original launch.
I was personally surprised at the popularity of the DSi XL. It seemed completely counterintuitive...people have been clamoring for smaller electronics that do more, not bigger electronic devices that have the same capabilities. And making the screen bigger only seemed to emphasize the low graphical fidelity of the DS line.
But people bought it like hotcakes. And in multiple colors, no less.
Shows what I know. So at this point a 3DS XL wouldn't surprise me at all.
im going to buy a 3ds at the end of the this month. do you guys sure that no redesign at 3ds? anyone pls. thx :)
Too much gimmicky hardware upgrades, not enough substantial ones. Maybe it is a bit early to say that, but the upgrades they choose to highlight are usually the more bleh ones (e.g. bigger screen). What I'm more concerned about are the performance enhancements (e.g. 802.11n?).

@mjc0961 By that logic, a lot of rumors have turned out to be right, so people give them credit. I don't see anything wrong with that.
Wii U was a massive disappointment along with the entirety of E3. A 3DS XL would at least be some good news amongst this farce of a E3 we're having.
@Crossel777 Said it all !
I think they will actually release a new 3DS now, because the guy said they would. Then the other guys said it wouldn't be there on Tuesday's Press Conference. Then they mentioned that tomorrow there will another special show for 3DS only...
What do you think?Possible?
i bought mine at launch knowing they would do this. if it's a big improvement I'll just trade up lol
So, a story about a report that is [according to the actual hardware manufacturer] 'full of errors' - top marks :P great reporting GS :P

So why report it to be updated hours later informing readers it [the story] is infact complete b*ll*cks! - why? well to sucker people to read mis-information thats why.
Btw, anyone that rates Okami and Zelda Majoras Mask 1.0 and Halo:CE 2.5 is't worth listening to - so thanks you can shut your loose mouth now, you sad noob :P
Give us the second circle pad that should have been there at launch. And an updated Kid Icarus that uses it for the camera.
If they add a second joystick, and a bigger battery I'll consider it. The Circle Pad Pro was a disappointment for me, it didn't work with the extended life battery I use.
I really don't want this because I only got my own 3DS September last year, and I'm currently saving up for an Xbox and a Wii U. This is too much Nintendo!
I just think one thing.... F***! First the freaking ps4, now this... What next? If the publishers and companies focus on doing new consoles instead of improving their games the market will start to lose consumers
@cayne_phoenix If you look at nintendo's history, there never has been.
I for one held out on buying a 3DS knowing there would be a future pricedrop/redesign.
Not just Nintendo - see PS2 & Slim, PSP1000,2000,3000 etc. variants, Xbox360 & Slim, PS3 and Slim - Gameboy Advance and DS etc. and their many variants are just the norm these days :P
@digi-demon The PSP variants added too little to the system to be worth another buy. Now, making the system more than twice the size, thats really screwing early adopters.
This is annoying. I'm a fan of Nintendo and all that, but hell, I just got my 3DS and they're coming out with a new one. I guess it's not REALLY breaking tradition since there were like 40 gameboys (regular, color, pocket, etc.) and gameboy advances (normal, SP, etc) and then the DS itself, but..As much of a smart marketing ploy this may be, at least do something that makes people with the older hardware not feel so obsolete. Hell, I'm broke all the time and I got bills to pay so I rarely get to splurge and enjoy one of my hobbies. I don't know. Maybe it's not such a bad thing, but still, it seems like right when I finally 'catch up' to the crowd, Something like this happens. They KNOW people will buy it. At least I'll still be able to play the newer games. I just won't have, 'better 3D, a bigger screen, bluetooth' or whatever the hell they'll be adding. As long as I can play the games, then I guess it's fine with me. Don't mind my ranting. Lol.
@ImprezaGTT Yes, the software is a little lacking.
Maybe they should take a leaf out of their competitors book... oh, but looking at the PSVita line up then maybe they shoudn't - lol
@ImprezaGTT Tales of the Abyss, RE Revelations, Metal Gear Snake Eater 3D, Kid Icarus, Mario Kart, Super Mario Bros 3D, RE Mercenaries, Dead or Alive. Aren't those enough?

@danusty there u go they r not releasing a new model apparently. But Kid Icarus was really great for me =) You got also Zelda OT, which is a must get if you are a nintendo fan. What kind of games do u want then if a new Dead or Alive or a new Mario Kart dont seem good to you? You got a lot more coming up this summer such as Heroes of Ruin (you have to check this one) and Luigi's Mansion. Oh and I forgot to mentioned Super Mario Bros. Sorry Nintendo did amazing with the 3DS and thats in only a year.
Would love a larger screen. At 52, even with glasses, it's hard to see in 3D. I'm in, would even probably buy it and give my current 3DS to the neighbor's kid.
I love my 3DS...but the screen really is tiny...would like to see one that rivals the size of a Vita lol
I'd expect a redesign of the 3ds with a second thumb pad first. the whole second thumb pad dock really puts me off buy one as i'm pretty sure it will be intergrated at some point
