@chibi-acer That scale has no value to third parties if that installed base has no interest in playing their games. The scale is with the owners of the other systems and the PC.
American boss Reggie Fils-Aime tells CNN the House of Mario probably won't enter the new dimension with its next home console.
This past Sunday, Nintendo entered a new dimension with its latest portable, the glasses-free 3DS. The system quickly became Nintendo's fastest-selling portable of all time. However, the Japanese game company now says it is unlikely that 3D will be a part of its next home console.
The news stems from Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime, who told CNN that the next hardware product from Nintendo will be a Wii follow-up and that 3D likely will not be a part of it.
"Glasses-free is a big deal," Fils-Aime said. "We've not said publicly what the next thing for us will be in the home console space, but based on what we've learned on 3D, likely, that won't be it."
Further, Nintendo director and producer Hideki Konno said the company is resisting 3D implementation simply because it currently requires glasses.
"I think at Nintendo, we realize that any sort of goggle-type 3-D technology was not going to work," Konno said. "In order to make 3-D technology viable with video games, we thought we needed to have glasses-free 3-D."
As for the Wii successor, earlier this month brokerage firm Sterne Agee said it "would not be surprised" to see Nintendo show off its next console at this summer's Electronic Entertainment Expo, which runs June 7-9.
PLEASE FOR GAMERTAGS! I freakin had Freind codes for every game! Atleast have the one like the 3ds were all you need is 1 per wii instead of 1 per game...
@ atopp399 First, sorry to be making a list of comments. This is the last one I promise. Second,I hear you about the 3rd party support, but that's simply the developers' fault. The Wii is the best selling console this generation, and there is no reason they couldn't cash in on the enormous install-base.Games like Metroid and Conduit prove that decent graphics are possible on it,even if not on the same level as HD systems. When Nintendo makes their next console, whether they call it "Wii-2" or not,the devs would be wise to take advantage of what it has to offer, instead of being afraid of something different.
@ dawnofhero Or the U.S.A. to ditch George Washington.Or electricity to ditch Thomas Edison.Or the pass-time of counting to infinity twice to ditch Chuck Norris.
Thank you Nintendo. If your next console is just a Wii with big graphics,Blu-ray,HD,and 3D,then you have done a very non-Nintendo thing, and have failed. We need all of that(excluding 3D.The TVs are too expensive.)plus whatever deviously innovative thing no one else has done yet that you've been thinking about.Show us Nintendo.Make us drool.
I'm glad Nintendo isn't offering 3D for its next gen console. As much as I like watching 3D movies, I only care if they stay at the theater, games don't need to have image pop out of the TV at you to be innovative.
Nintendo has at least made it to their sixth home console. So a second edition of the wii in HD. Since Nintendo has made a successful brand name out of the "wii" You count count on them to think of another different idea for the 6th console. and a name like "wii two" or something completely off the wall.
Based on the success of the Wii, it will probably be quite similar, but with a twist. Just like the 3DS is a DS with a twist. Do ya know what I'm tryin to say, people?
@burgo81 Mario is the reason we play games in the first place. Telling Nintendo to ditch Mario is like telling Disney to ditch Mickey.
If I want 3D gaming, I will use my Nintendo 3DS. Although I am not obsessed with graphics, a HD Nintendo console would be great. Hopefully, they'll continue to go the extra mile with their systems and games. :)
Probably a good idea on Nintendo's part. I think 3D for video games is an interesting gimmick but not really viable until it's really fine tuned. (It's also a gimmick for most movies with a few notable exceptions like Avatar).
I think it is safe to assume that the "Wii 2" or whatever will be a full HD console! It has been rumoured on many websites i cannot name because the "net police" will rape me! Hopefully Nintendo will try and aim at a more mature audience as Mario fans have aged!... and try not to re-make the same old games, Mario is amazing and Mario Galaxy 2 is one of the few games to get full marks on review!!! We will see what happens with the "Wii 2" whether it is 3D (which is possible, dont believe the above) I know for a fact that the new HD 3D TV being released within a year have no need for goggles!
yeah, i just don't play that, whats it called....WII... anymore the PS3 AND 360 just look too good on my T.V.
@atopp399 My take on him saying Wii follow-up is more in an evolution of the Wii. You'll have your improved motion controls, but you will also have hopefully improved graphics (HD Support please!) and a better online interface. I know my biggest turn off with the Wii is the lack of 720p as well. I really love Zelda and some of the other Nintendo games, but I just can't bring myself to turn on my Wii anymore when I have things on my PS3 to play.
Thank you Nintendo... As long as it is 720p I will be happy. I am not even a graphics whore usually but games like Twilight Princess on the Wii looks so lackluster on large LCD televisions that I really, really hope they go to 720p or better. I would also love them to do away with motion controls but I know that will not happen. Maybe they will give all games the ability to choose whether you want motion controls or not. That would be the best of both worlds. Classic type controller for people like me and motion controls for people who like them.
The one thing that makes me nervous is how he said the next console will be a Wii follow-up. The Wii has such horrible third part support right now that I am afraid the trashy games are going to continue. Pretty much the only games I own or play are games made by Nintendo.
Either way I am sure it will be affordable which is a big part of how Nintendo does so well. Sony and MS next systems will probably be close to $700-$800 based on their last systems. If Nintendo keeps the Wii2 in the $300 or less range they will have a hit.
That's fine, I'm mainly concerned with improved graphics (i.e. up to date with other consoles at least), content downloads (dlc, demos, etc), improved online play, use accounts rather than FC's, bigger hdd, better controllers. Also, bring back the Nintendo seal of quality.
wonder what gimmick the wii2 is going to have then? none the less will still buy it coz it be nice to play Zelda and some mario in hd hopefully using a option to use a gamepad, i dont like using a tv control to play games :/
@Magnificent_1 yeah your right i always said that to other people and many of sony fanboy always give disapprove to me i think they always rely on graphics. but now i like nintendo because they can make good game without killer graphics.
ok here are the points that we know of nintendos next gen console 1. will be hd 2. will NOT be 3d the smart thing to do is realize that the current gen will have to last until 2014 at least and bring out the best ensemble of technology that they can and release games that appeal to a wide variety of consumers (sorry guys but a mario game ever 2 weeks will have to go, because mario was fun about 20 years ago and if they want to be family friendly then an obese italian man that defeats his enemies by sitting on them, should not be used as their mascot)
I think Nintendo are on the right here. Why release a visual 3D experience on a console when you need glasses in order to get the experience? Nintendo leaned that the hard way with 3D games on the NES as well as for the Virtual Boy.
@sulaymanqazi nintendo nerds dont care about those games, your comment makes you a fanboy. also, if you dont like nintendo nerds, just your xbox 360 and ps3, why are you here?
@Ryagan Those are good, and I have some of them, but they do not and cannot compare to the bigger games on PS3 and the 360. Heavy Rain, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, COD, Arkham Asylum, Assassins Creed, Halo, Bioshock etc. The Wii can't handle half of those.
ben it will be hd but not 3d they already said one time before that , the next system will be hd 3d would be questionable if its ready -the prices of the tvs have to be down and over half the population of gamers must own a 3d tv for them to even make such decision and that clearly isnt the case ,
NO 3D well i wonder why... oh yeah it's cause 3D TVS are so ridiculously unnecessary that even Nintendo who is 2 console generations behind anyway (Wii is a Game Cube) won't jump on that bandwagon
Nintendo needs to go into HD for its next console or I won't be able to compete with Microsoft and Sony. I know that you don't need to have good graphics in a good game but at least it will help with the current generation. I don't like looking at standard definition anymore.
You don't need good graphics for a good game, Nintendo tries to teach Sony and Microsoft that, and they still don't learn. Give me quality, or give me death!
Please do tell me that their next console will at LEAST like HD. Without it, it's going to collect dust after a year.
i just hope that the next gen console for nintendo is actually next gen i just feel that the current incarnation of the wii is a ps2 with little kiddy games, nintendo may have sold the most amount of consoles but for the people that can't afford a ps3/xbox then the cheap console is the best bet, and i already know that nintendo vp has already realized that they need to release better quality games because a lot of people have the console but is gathering dust, please please please nintendo push your limits stop releasing cut and past games(party games) and release games/consoles that knock our socks off
@barnold81 I think you used the term "economies of scale" incorrectly. There are way more Wii's out there than 360s or PS3, so technically Nintendo has the advantage of economies of scale.
@iAmAbel Actually, there was an article on here about a couple weeks ago (as well as several other sites) which stated that MS was eyeballing a 2015 release for the next XBOX. And with Sony's intention on keeping their systems alive for a decade-plus, it'd be safe to assume the PS4 would likely be out around then as well. I'm not complaining.
@iAmAble adding better graphics would mean having a more powerful gpu which in turn would need a bigger power supply and more expensive hardware.. to sum it up i don't think Nintendo wants to start turning their systems into larger ones such as the ps3 and Xbox 360.. but who knows with technology going as it has hardware will start shrinking to accomodate for demand, in the end Sony and Microsoft will always out preform Nintendo products graphics wise
I've owned every Nintendo system except for the Virtual Boy. I think I will probably eventually get a 3DS, but no more consoles. Not until they create a console that allows developers to get economies of scale (technology on par with Xbox 360 and PS3, for example) and not until they take online gaming seriously. Regardless if a game is online multiplayer or not, I like connecting to the online community and seeing what people are playing.
i wonder what nintendo will have in store for us next? maybe HD, good online, ONLINE USERNAMES, a 120 or 250 GB hard drive (no "blocks", just plain gigs), or something else that would make me instantly flock to it.
Kinda to early. Hope it comes out in 2013 or somthing And who said playstation n xbox will wait til 2015?
I agree with Nintendo's call here. The future of 3D anything doesn't include glasses on your face (unless you need them, of course). In my humble opinion, spending money on an expensive 3D-TV or etc at this point is a massive waste of funds, it's like being that one guy that poured his money into HD-DVDs, only to find out that Blu-Ray was the way to go all along. I say, hold out for a couple more years, then put 3D on your consoles. Anyone else wonder why 2015 is the rough date for the next Microsoft/Sony systems..? Anyone? They are waiting for glasses-free 3D!
We need gamer tags and a wii mote with a mic in it so we can talk online and a button like xbox middle button were you can see friends online and stuff. Also I want to ADD PEOPLE AS FRIENDS IF I PLAY THEM ONLINE!
1) Obviously it won't be 3D. Nobody has 3,000 dollars to spend on a 3D tv+glasses+a home console+games. And if they do, 3D isn't worth thousands and they buy good stuff instead. 2) Graphics don't make the game good. The gameplay makes the game good. @ graphics hookers.
i hope nintendo returns to its days of dominance and comes out with a console thats not only innovative but caught up hardware rise. N64 was IT back in the day, and to return to that state of power would be king.
Also, I don't think that the people saying Nintendo's next console NEEDS high def, simply that it would be a nice addition, and seems like a good direction for Nintendo to go since they made so much profit off the Wii. They can afford to throw in that extra feature for the next console.
@Harold317 what else would nintendo do? Oh yea they also have Love Hotels in Japan- Really funny look it up!!
I love Nintendo, they have outstanding franchises. I just hope the next console is a little more "hardcore" than the Wii felt. I want a return to the glory day of the SNES, N64 and Gamecube, when games were made for nerds, not grandmas and soccer moms ;P At least their 1st party games are still quite good, even if they are (arguably) not as good as past iterations.
