Nintendo responds to supposed Wii U hack

Company rep says "debug menu" was a "mock up" and has now been removed and made inaccessible.
Just hours after the Wii U launched in the United States yesterday, NeoGAF forum members claimed to have been accidentally granted access to the system's "debug menu." This reportedly allowed them to access a list of administrators, with options to regenerate passwords, delete accounts altogether, and even view messages from developers.
Nintendo has now commented on the matter, telling GamesIndustry International that the screenshots posted to the forum show a "mock up" of the system's back end and it has been removed and disabled altogether.
"It has come to our attention that some people were able to access a mock up menu on Miiverse following the launch of Wii U in the US," reads a line from the statement. "Please note that this was only a mock up menu and has now been removed and is not accessible."

Yea it's a Eddie Makuch article he's known for having misleading titles associated with his articles on gameinformer I read this same story except the title to there article was more straight forward gamers discover WII U debug menu. I clicked this article thinking it was something different only to find out it's the samething.
This really isn't a big deal, if you have ever seen anything that goes into game/program development. It's really easy to accidentally leave something like this in the game (even the tiniest things can cause shitstorms to appear). Most "glitches" and "exploits" are never actually faults in the program's functioning, it's really just the fact that none of the team realized how the program would interpret the instructions.
Layman's terms: It's correctly doing things the wrong way.
Why do you think QA teams are so huge.
Now every system violation is hacking! You access the debug menu, you're hacker!You mod a console, call the national security!!
There wasn't any supposed hack. It was all legit. I mean, who wouldn't want to be the first to hack into a brand new system? Well, I wouldn't, but you know what I mean, right?

5 Like Doesn't matter , soon or later hackers will find a way to let people play with "pirated" copies, they always find.
4.31 custom firmware has been out for over a month. Rogero figured it out after the e3 team found the root keys and leaked them by accident. I'm playing AC3 on mine right now;)
This is 4.30 i have it running and have PSN access its been out for a while so you musn't have looked hard if at all you can downgrade your console to 3.55 and upgrade from there

1 Like Great, but can they fix the rattling in my gamepad and add a feature to turn off the lights on the front that are always on. I also long for an actual ethernet port.
1 Like @Rayzakk Just get a router and you can have wireless internet in your house simply plug your ethernet cable to it, set up a password (most come with passwords already) and you are good to go.
Nintendo is not known for good wireless support. I never could get my Wii to connect wirelessly and the 3DS took me a while.
There are other reasons people might want to use a hardwired connection, too.
@HonorOfGod I am old and detest wireless. I prefer wires for everything. I fear change and I shall keep my bushes.
I think you may need to get a new router as all of my wireless devices I use receive 90 to 95% of my DL speed and that is with concurrent users (off peak times).
@HonorOfGod @Dnaisinmybody @Rayzakk You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. What would having a faster download speed have to do with hacking anything? I prefer a faster download speed so that my files, wait for it, download faster. I also have Comcast and the fastest internet they have. I often have around 35mbps. When my PS3 is wireless within about ten to fifteen feet of the router I would get around 5mbps. When I wire it I get around 12-15mbps. This means when I download larger files such as full games that can be around 10GB it can be done pretty quickly.
You should just stop talking, it makes you look worse and worse with each senseless comment you leave.
@Dnaisinmybody Agreed, you should never leave your main PC on a wireless network, leaves you with no back out option.

1 Like @HonorOfGod @Dnaisinmybody @Rayzakk You do realize that a wired connection is faster than a wireless one right? I wire everything I can. I have a nice top of the line router but it still doesn't beat a wired connection. My PC and PS3 both get much faster download speeds when wired.
I also have a big home and the wireless signal doesn't reach the other end of the home with a strong connection when my 100 foot ethernet cable reaches my second router just fine to allow everything on that side to be wired as well.
Also buying new furniture shouldn't result in needing to move your desktop computer unless you are still using the 6 foot cable an Xbox or your router came with. Go out and buy a 25, 50, or 100 foot cable and never worry about it. They are really cheap, under $20.
I also don't go out and buy a big couch and bring it home only to find I don't have room for it and need to rearrange everything to make it fit.

I hope your internet gets hacked and that somebody uses up all your bandwith as it's practically what you're inviting people to do by saying you have such great tools defending your internet connection.

Cables.. >.> some people don't ever leave town hu? I move around allot so Wifi is a must for me.
@the_requiem Maybe if you buy something that takes up space like a new big couch and the desktop is in the way you would need to move your set up to another place and instead of being limited by a cable or plug you would not have to worry about anything you can set your desktop anywhere... O_O am I the onlyone living in the year 2012? lmao
9 Like @HonorOfGod @Rayzakk Anybody with just a bit of computer skills and free time on his hands can hack your wi-fi easy. I do have a wi-fi router but I use it for my consoles. My PC is still connected with a cable and it will remain the same until they become non-existent.

@Rayzakk Well if you ever do get one you wont be sorry. You will be able to take your Laptop, desktop and games all over the house and set them anywhere it also helps with space in the house or apartment. Most go for cheap I have had mines for more than 5 years now and never had a problem.
1 Like The user who supposedly "hacked" the Wii U found some unannounced names that could represent games. Among those were Yoshi's Land and Soul Hacker. Hopefully, taking into account Nintendo's reaction, they actually are some unannounced games.

@Shadowmax889 @AmnesiaHaze I feel like the mock-up statement seems... questionable. What is their exact definition of mock-up? It seems like they are covering up a big mistake, but that's my opinion.
@Rickystickyman @AmnesiaHaze is a mock up becuase it has games that do not exist and never will like "yoshi land WiiU" i sugest to go to the original source beside IGN has the photograph with the bogus titles with better resolution

@Landsharkk @AndCarlsen @Shadowmax889 @AmnesiaHaze You do know bricked consoles happened to the morons who decided to shut off or unplug the Wii U during an update. The same this would happen on any other console or PC, hence the "Do not turn off console during an update" text you always see.

@AndCarlsen @Shadowmax889 @AmnesiaHaze It's not hate, it's facts. On day 1 there has been the debug menu, the bricked Wii U consoles, the weird $0.50 for kid accounts, and the lack of ability to move accounts to a different console.
I'm actually surprised the Wii U bricked console issue hasn't made a spot in an article on gamespot yet. It has happened to a couple of friends of mine (and no, they didn't turn the console off during the update).
