Nintendo Network 'emergency maintenance' through tomorrow

Affected services include Pokemon DS games, matchmaking for Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper, and access to virtual marketplaces.

The Nintendo Network will undergo "emergency maintenance" beginning today at noon Pacific time, resulting in intermittent availability for a range of games and services, Nintendo has announced.

The first maintenance period will begin today at 12:00 p.m. and last through 5:00 p.m. Affected services include the Wii U eShop, the Nintendo 3DS eShop, the Wii shopping channel, and the Nintendo DSi shop.

The next portion of the emergency maintenance begins at 5:00 p.m. today when Wii U matchmaking, ranking, and other online-enabled features for Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper will be subject to intermittent availability. This maintenance is expected to take one hour, ending at 6:00 p.m.

Lastly, network services for Nintendo DS titles Pokemon Black and White and Pokemon Black and White 2 will be affected beginning this evening at 11:00 p.m. through Tuesday, January 29, at 5:00 p.m.

Nintendo did not provide any details on why the maintenance is necessary. A company representative told GameSpot, “The work being done on the Nintendo Network is part of our normal maintenance activities. Most of the maintenance affects only a few games, and includes a slightly extended scheduled maintenance of our Nintendo eShop services.”

@Albelnox0 I know Nintendo wasn't the first to make a Home Console (I think it was the Odyssey, correct me if i'm wrong) what I mean is that after the Video Game Crash of 1983 Console gaming was pretty much dead in Europe and USA (PC gaming was doing fine), It wasn't until Nintendo brought over the Famicom from Japan (I think in 1985) that Home consoles were saved because of the massive success of the Nes.

Well at least they only take it down for a hour to 5 hours at a time ....so far that beats the other 2 companies hands down....we will see, but also it is FREE so that also makes it easier to swallow...

Maybe somebody hacked them to complete their pokemon collection? (Rolls Eyes)

I hope they are adding a simple "Friend Invite" feature to all the games online because going online and having to put in a match code is ridiculous. Tekken Tag 2 and Ninja Gaiden, I'm referring to you mostly

Who really cares about nintendo as serious gamers who want to see more improved gameplay and graphics? They are only wanting money from mom and dad than those who grew up playing their games. They abandoned me so I abandoned them.  All of nintendo games are not worth half the price they charge and haven't bought a game from them in years.

"They are only wanting money"

Well, yeah. It's a business after all.

Eddie, how the heck is this an emergency when this was SCHEDULED? This has been announced since last week.

@nintendoboy16Wow, defensive much? It says so on Nintendo's website.  Go look, scroll down, it's boxed in in red writing: "Emergency Maintenance."

@lorenzoa88 Fair enough, but you really can't call something an emergency if it's been planned ahead of time.

@nintendoboy16 @lorenzoa88 Emergency maintenance usually means short notice with critical services going down.  It's a good thing that Nintendo's emergency maintenance is announced a week before it happens.  It's all relative.  How far in advance does regular maintenance get scheduled?

Nintendo should get out of hardware and strictly produce software. They are gonna get their @ss kicked by the new hybrid consoles.

@enoslives7 If I had a dollar every time I read/hear that...

Let me tell you, if THAT happened, you and many other "gamers" wanting a third party Nintendo will be in for a rude awakening. Something we should have learned from SEGA and how the Sonic franchise was/still is received after the series went multiplatform.

Everyone would be better off if they left gaming COMPLETELY after all the hypocritical s*** they have been putting up with.

96augment

@nintendoboy16 Not everyone. The fans of Legend of Zelda, Mario, Donkey Kong, Kirby and Metroid would really be upset if Nintendo just left gaming.

96augment
96augment

@nintendoboy16 Yeah, that might be true. Or all those franchises could become even better on other platforms. It doesn't matter anyway. Nintendo is not leaving gaming anytime soon.

nintendoboy16
nintendoboy16

@96augment Would there be sadness that their favorite franchise is gone? Yes. But does anyone want to see their favorite franchise get even worse reception? No.

Again, see what happened to SEGA when they went multi-console.

Knew about this last week, won't be bothered since I'm babysitting both days so I'll be away from my Wii U.

Does that mean you actually won't troll every Nintendo article? That is news.

Obviously you don't know the meaning of trolling, but it's cool, I'll let you believe what you want.

Well at least it's maintenance and not a shutdown unlike Sony. Nintendo probably just hired a new virtual janitor to clean up their act after last year's leftover.

I'm more surprised we have real news instead of more of whose on what MLG team with gamespot trying to convince us that e-sports (sorry I have to supress a laugh when I say or type it) is really something the average gamer cares about.  Still wonder why they had to perform "emergency maintence".  Hopefully it's nothing.

@YEPEE00 Orochi is a pretty good character.  And what his blood does to the characters that get it, you don't even want to know.  Play KOF to find out more.
