Nintendo lifts European eShop restrictions

Mario maker no longer restricting sale of 18+ titles through Wii U and 3DS eShops to 11 p.m.-3 a.m.

Nintendo of Europe today confirmed to Eurogamer that it has lifted restrictions on 18+ games sold through the Wii U and 3DS eShops. As revealed in December, users were previously only able to browse and purchase these titles between the hours of 11 p.m. and 3 a.m due to a German youth protection law.

"Following analysis of the Parental Controls system on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS in cooperation with USK, the German Entertainment Software Self-Regulation Body, it was deemed that Nintendo's Parental Control system is of very high quality and offers a remarkable level of protection for children," a Nintendo statement reads. "Nintendo's Parental Control system was found to have proved itself in practice."

The Wii U launched in Europe on November 30 and has sold over 3 million units worldwide through December. In the United States, the Wii U reportedly sold only 57,000 units in January and 64,000 systems in February. Nintendo has yet to officially update Wii U sales.

I read online in the news the Wii U sales are so poor retailers are considering scaling back support of it. Doesn't look good for Nintendo Wii U

@gamer20482  Wii U sale is poor because Nintendo was not competing MS or Sony but their main focus was Apple and Android gadgets that is the point of its failure..

"The price of the Wii U is being slashed by UK retailers, according toMCVUK. HMV is selling the Wii U Premium bundle that includesNintendoLand andZombiU for £199.99. This is £140 off the recommended retail price. GameStop is selling the same bundle at £244.97.

"We have taken the decision to reduce the price of the Basic Wii U to test the market and assess the impact of a price change for a short period of time," said ShopTo purchasing director James Rowson. "This has resulted in a smaller than desired increase in sales at this stage."

In the US, Best Buy has the Basic Bundle on sale for $249.99 today and Saturday. This is a $50 reduction in price."

Typical Nintendo at its finest. When it got hot, they backed out. The money QUICKLY outweighed morality.

@snova9308 It's stupid considering they already said how good the parental controls were.

Oh the irony! The games mustn't be selling at all. I doubt anyone who bought the WiiU are itching for these restricted games, let alone any "cool kids".

Better than late than never, but Nintendo's paint has already been scratched seriously by this.

Should have gotten your ducks in a row first Nintendo, so you didn't look like idiots.

Don't blame Germany, this is and always was your decision.

There's a wait? I always saw my posts get immediately responded to on MiiVerse.

Oh, I haven't been active on MiiVerse since January, I guess that's why because since I'm one of those MiiVerse artists (been focusing on my psychical drawings lately) I would get "Yeahs" and comments almost immediately after putting up a new drawing.

@jcnba28 @GSJones1994 Once the Wii U get games and sells more after E3, those idiots will all act like prophets and say "you have merely delayed the inevitible."

if nintendo is throwing away their (questionable) philosophy of content offers its a bad sign for the state of the console

SerebiifromSPP
SerebiifromSPP

@AmnesiaHaze No. Nintendo were forced to do this by German law enforced by a body that has now agreed that the Parental Controls are sufficient. This has NOTHING to do with Nintendo's philosophy else it'd have been in ALL regions, not just Europe.

Finally. Im guessing Germany has these crazy laws cos they don't want to produce the next opposing leader of WW3 but why couldn't Nintendo just localise these enforcements in the first place!

Nice news, but the problem is that buying digital things on the Wii-U is still worthless, because games are tied to a single console instead of an account.

I find it really sad that one country stringent censorship laws (Germany) can dictate the whole Europe how to act.  But still, it is one good thing for Nintendo.

@ziproy @GSJones1994 @Vampire64 blame the german goverment if anyone, im quite sure his family has little to do with it, many oppose the german censoring, but as with many things goverment related, getting rid of that department of it, is easier said than done

So you use to have to wait in till after 11 too buy a M rated game. that's stupid because if someone under the age wants it they will wait in till that time to get it or have someone else get it for them. its a good thing that rule is gone.

@WWE6427 hing is Nintendos head office is in Germany and that German law all mature content is unavailable until 11pm and then only avalible till 3am
