matnaami: How dare you insult a great hockey player! You shouldn't be judging Staal and Tie Domi by their looks!
Carolina Hurricanes center Eric Staal skates away with cover athlete spot for Electronic Arts' next pucks game.
The Carolina Hurricanes are no longer the reigning Stanley Cup champions--the Anaheim Ducks snagged that title last week--but at least the team's star center Eric Staal has a new honor to help fill the Cup-shaped hole in his heart. Electronic Arts today named Staal the cover athlete of the upcoming hockey game NHL 08.
The 23-year-old Staal has played three seasons in the NHL, missing one game, scoring 86 goals and more than 200 points, and winning one Stanley Cup championship for the 2005-2006 season. He joins a number of Cup-winning cover boys for EA's hockey series, including Vincent Lecavalier, Joe Sakic, Mario Lemieux, and Peter Forsberg.
While Staal is the first of his family to grace a game's packaging, he might not be the last. Younger brother Jordan Staal just completed his first year with the Pittsburgh Penguins, led the league in shooting percentage (22.1 percent) and shorthanded goals (7), and is a finalist for the 2007 Calder Trophy, which goes to the most outstanding rookie. Then there's Eric's other younger brothers Marc and Jared, a pair of highly drafted prospects who have yet to make their NHL debuts.
Electronic Arts' NHL 08 is set for release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and PC this fall.
I think E. Staal is cool, but they should have put an Anaheim Duck on the cover, since they finally won the Cup
Crosby played the last two weeks of the season on a broke foot and he won the art ross, deffinetly should have been Crosby
Yeah! Go CANES! Eric Staal is a great player. Although there could have been somebody else i think he's a great pick.
Weird Choice... but whatever. Also, No Wii version? Thank god I bought a new graphics card back in November and will be able to play this on my PC.
that sucks.. he looks like an inside out baby... he's ugly as F*** you may as well put friggen Tie Domi on cover... they should have put Koivu since he did win the King Clancy Trophy which recognizes the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities both on and off the ice... or how about a good player NOT STAAL... how about Giguere... they dont have players.... crosby is also the NHL's **** hes good but is a little Pu**Y
Crosby a wannabe? That's a load of bull. Hew only one the Pearson, hart, and the Art Ross trophies. Yeah he must suck. The cover should have went to Luongo. Staal have a good year last year when he won the Cup. He didn't make the playoffs this year.
i would have liked more if Crosby was on the cover, but Staal is a great player too.. Go Pens and Ducks!!!
ZuljinRaynor : "barbierian205 isn't Neidermayer the guy who took a cheap shot on that other guy and got suspended or something? hehe, that's a good choice. That was Rob Niedermayer, not Scott." it was Pronger, not either of the Niedermayers
I'm really not sure Stall should of gotten the nod. Maybe last year. Atleast it wasn't Crosby I guess.
Staal is certainly a very good player, but Crosby would be a much better choice for something like this. He's the face of the NHL right now. Ask anybody to name one player in the NHL, and I don't think one person would say 'Eric Staal'. A good number would say Crosby.
Oy oy let's not bash on Brodeur now. He's a legend, and a legend he shall remain. And congrats to Staals' brothers on their great accomplishment. Maybe they will be amongst the legends someday.
eric staal is an elite young player you americans dont know hockey. he is a team player and tries his hardest every game. crosby is a weiner and doesnt deserve the cover.
"Crosby choked (in the playoffs) too." At least he was there. Eric Staal watched all of this year's playoffs, yet he still gets the cover...
Philadendron Brodeur choked in the playoffs...couldn't have been him. I was really thinking it was going to be Crosby. Crosby choked too. barbierian205 isn't Neidermayer the guy who took a cheap shot on that other guy and got suspended or something? hehe, that's a good choice. That was Rob Niedermayer, not Scott.
Horrible team, mediocre player. They didn't even make it to the playoffs this season, and his stats didn't even jump out anytime during last season. So may other people deserved this alot more. Roberto Luongo, Sidney Crosby, Martin Brodeur, and a handful of people from Buffalo. Eric Stall, in now way, deserves this cover. I think I'll make my own cover, print it off of the computer or something.
Jordan Staal had a better year than his older brother, and other players have had better seasons than these two, ridiculous.
I don't get why they would put a guy on the cover who had an off-season. Great player but he had a bad season and his team flopped after winning the Cup the previous year. Makes no sense. Crosby would be an obvious choice but what about Selanne or Scott Niedermayer? Tons of better choices than Staal. Or Emery like that guy said. He's got personality which the NHL desperately needs to sell the game. Same with Avery, but even though I'm a Rangers fan he's not an elite player and only elite players should be coverboys in my opinion.
Crosby didn't get the cover because he wanted too much money. There are contractual agreements that come with being on the cover, you have to do PR for the game, do commercials, etc. For some players the money that comes with the being on the cover isn't worth it.
isn't Neidermayer the guy who took a cheap shot on that other guy and got suspended or something? hehe, that's a good choice.
Seems like EA sports is a year off with this one. He had a phenomenal season two years ago but last year he took a step down in production. With an added emphasis on defense and skating maybe they should have put Scott Niedermayer on the cover since he is great at both. If not him then why not Crosby or Lecavalier. Staal would have been a good choice last year, and they did use him in a boat load of advertising as well, but this year. Not like it matters anyway I just hope the game is even better then last years which was awesome.
I dont really care who's on the cover.. however.. i do care what platforms its released on.. how come theyve not announced a Wii version? I mean.. theres a ps2 version in the works..
Coming from a diehard LA Kings fan (Lord knows that's not easy), I am still hopeful that sometime before I die I will see a King on the cover of a new hockey game. Maybe. And as much as I hate the Ducks, my hat's off to them.
They should have put Sidney Crosby...I mean, he was the best player for 2006/2007. It only makes sense...
lets face it, hockey is dead in USA. when NBC cuts to the horse race before an OT playoff game, and it wasnt even the race it was prerace activites, you know ur sports not doing to well. (not to mention the 1.1 rating game3 of the finals got lol)
why is everyone saying it should have been him or him or whoever? EA arent going to change their minds, you might as well accept it. i have no idea who this guy is, i live in the Uk, but you know what, good on him.
