NFS: Shift DLC goes gratis next month

EA and Slightly Mad's street racer gains five cars and one mode in Team Racing add-on pack on 360 beginning December 1, PS3 two days later.

Need for Speed: Shift didn't make much of an impression at retail when it hit the gas on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and PSP in September. The game shifted some 300,000 units across the four platforms, though nearly all of that tally was distributed evenly between Microsoft's and Sony's consoles. Today, EA announced that those who have picked up the latest installment in its 100 million-unit franchise will be afforded a round of free downloadable content.

The Xbox 360 edition of the Team Racing pack will arrive on December 1, with the PS3 version following on December 3. The pack contains five new cars and a new mode. Of the new rides, EA will add the 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray 427, 1967 Shelby GT-500, 1969 Dodge Charger R/T, 1971 Dodge Challenger R/T, and 1998 Toyota Supra Mark IV.

The new mode will take the same name as the DLC pack. As its name implies, Team Racing mode sees groups of up to six gamers per side face-off against one another in ranked online circuits.

@takeshi0106 gratis comes from latin and therefore expanded to spanish, it means free, and you have in your dutch language but no sooner than spanish, it is a spanish word, period.

since when is gratis used in spanish only?? it has been used for years in english, and many other languages. Give it a rest.

Too bad that the idea of a $60 yearly released same old same old NFS is such a turn off that I will NEVER be buying the game. So it doesn't matter if it is FREE as I will never have anything to play it with.
    \
    \
Rehashes should NEVER be full price. If you want me to buy your same old garbage each year make sure that it is cheap garbage.

How many bugs are going to come with the free DLC?

  • im-a-roustabout

    Posted Nov 23, 2009 6:24 am GMT

    @beardedkillacam

No, this game actually mirrors the real Need for Speed, those underground games came long after the original series came out, originally it was all about exotic cars, fast racing, and getting away from the 5-0!

  • im-a-roustabout

    Posted Nov 23, 2009 6:21 am GMT

    @thralll

I agree, I don't understand why he has to use the word gratis all the time. I guess they like that word here on GS but I see it getting overused. By the way gratis is not Spanish, but Latin which directly translates to "for thanks". It's used in just about 6 other countries as well.

  • Thralll

    Posted Nov 23, 2009 3:03 am GMT

I'd like to criticise the writer. Why do you write 'gratis' instead of free ? It's a good humor for some but most of the people don't know spanish and won't understand it.

  • poordude1089

    Posted Nov 23, 2009 1:46 am GMT

My guess is that this was supposed to be with the game from day one, but wasn't finished in time so it released with partial data (like RE5's Multiplayer), and this update will be the unlock key. At least they're not making people pay for it. Good show EA.

This game doesn't get the respect it deserves. It's challenging, different in a good way and now a free DLC, why hate on it? I like the game and that's all that matters to me!

  • alexLmx6

    Posted Nov 21, 2009 2:15 pm GMT

theyve realized that nobody is going to put any extra money into this game, and 20 bucks says this content was done before the game was even released, remember pro street when they were charging people for cars that existed in the code (at least on pc)

it was Need For Speed way before illegal street racing became fashionable. Hot Pursuit 2 was the peak of the series for me, everything else has been downhill.

  • beardedkillacam

ew most wanted suck nd prostreet was ok
they should bring street racing back its wayy better.
this game is call "Need for Speed" for illegal racing jeeze
not a knock-off of Grandturismo or Forza.
get with it producers my love for need for speed dropped since undercover came out. Make a STREET RACING GAME!!

Yes! Shift is a great game, not every game is going to be perfect, you just have to stop nitpicking at a game and you'll enjoy it a lot more. I didn't expect anything out of Shift, I bought it, and I play it on a daily basis. And now that I've bought it, I finally get a nice little reward for it. First the Coke Zero Viper and now this DLC. Kudos, EA.

  • y2kern

    Posted Nov 20, 2009 9:21 pm GMT

i played shift, shift is a really intense racing game, i believe its underrated , by gamespot. its not as bad as people say it is. need for speed was always more an arcade racer than a sim. i believe shift is a beginning of things to come, shift is easily the best looking nfs game out there, i think it will keep improving, for the next one i want my NOS with blurry effects and the noise. like in the underground series, also a city or highway to drive around in would be nice with this kind of graphics.

Are they going to have DLC for a better version of the game? Cause that would be nice. Here's hoping that Criterion can turn this lost, failing franchise around.
