Next Tomb Raider to be origin story
Crystal Dynamics says "forget everything you know about Tomb Raider"; new game will chronicle Lara Croft's first adventure.
The Tomb Raider franchise is one of the most recognizable in the industry. The series has spawned numerous titles since debuting in the mid 1990s. Also, it has graced the silver screen twice, with Hollywood heroine Angelina Jolie cast as series leading lady Lara Croft.
This year, the series went downloadable with the well-received Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. However, the franchise's console future has been in limbo, with the most recent release being 2008's underperforming Tomb Raider: Underworld.
Crystal Dynamics today sent word that the next Tomb Raider installment, simply titled Tomb Raider, will be an origin story. It will tell the tale of how Lara Croft came to be the crafty, nimble adventurer at the center of previous games. Details surrounding the title are still extremely few and far between, but developer Crystal Dynamics did offer the following teasing statement.
"After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was travelling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach. On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive," reads the description. Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrell Gallagher went one step further, saying, "Forget everything you knew about Tomb Raider."
The new Tomb Raider game will be featured in January's Game Informer magazine, which is due out on newsstands on December 11. Publisher Square Enix has not released any date or platform information for the game thus far.

I also have a good feeling abt this one, it seems to live up to uncharted's level, 2012
I have a feeling this one is going to be quite good. For one, from the premise itself, we get to find out why Lara Croft is Lara Croft, which is something that isn't explained at all.
I've actually got a really good feeling about this one..
If it takes the style of Tomb Raider ( Legend/Aniversary/Underworld ) Im duying to play it But If its kidy stuff like the Last one just go kill youre selves
So, when can we start tracking this game here on Gamespot? :)
After reading the Game Informer Magazine, for some odd reason this got me more excited than the news of Uncharted 3. Not to under appreciate Drake...It's just a blessing to see Lara (possibly) in a game she was meant to be in. The idea of the levels, game play and so forth makes this the most anticipated Tomb Raider for me. The Original is fun, Second was a good time, then I started getting lost after the 3rd. It's about time our Lady Lara returns...and looks like she could be a real woman.
@giantming : agreed :D
this game will hopefully be scary i mean come on "shes not alone" crazy inhabitants much :3
Now this is a reboot i can agree with. Just read the GameInformer article about it and it looks really good. DMC on the other hand looks like crap. They claim it appeals to a western audience but I can guarantee that Twilight Fans don't play DMC. :P
the old face was so cartoonist, new face is sweet!!!!
It's like if you're dating a hot chick when you're a fan of Tomb Raider. First she finds out she's starting to look her age, so she gets a face lift and a boob job. Ok no biggie, she's still hot. But then she sees that not enough like her, so now she wants MORE surgery! So now it's like, WTF! Just when you get used to a new Lara, they break her down and do her again. When will the changes stop?! When will Crystal get things right with the franchise? Why am I asking YOU these questions?! Just finish what happened after Underworld instead of starting "fresh" again. Still, this new Tomb Raider seems a bit more robust than Legend, Anniversary and Underworld.
Oh no.... not another franchise rebirth... pleeeaaassee!!! :( btw.. @xenogearz88 You are so right - DMC's rebirth is looking so utterly sh**te :D
Can't they just come up with a completely new game and character and not leech off the past?
Lara Croft deserves a legendary game. but unfortunately we never saw that. Now, that time has come!
well.....at least she's still recognizable, unlike some Twilight Virus infected drug junkie that's causing a massive civil war in the Devil May Cry fanbase.................. yup, i'd rather pick a young, freshly matured (although dirty and muddy) Lara Croft over a dirty, emo, crack smoking, frail, girly, weak looking Twilight Zombie that needs his daily dose of meth just to BREATHE!!!! heck, if the 2 games were to be launched on the same day, i bet customers would rather pick up the young hot chick over some drugged up emo zombie.
Sounds awesome, this might get me back into Tomb Raider games again.
This looked sweet in the new GI. This game needs to be of the highest caliber, and for the love of 1996, don't gimp the PS3 version!
I read the article on this game in the latest Game Informer & im hooked. The way they described it makes me want this game. Its like Old School Resident Evil without zombies. U gotta survive while avoiding traps or environmental hazards & solving puzzles. & they're going 4 a M rating. I never got in2 the Tomb Raider series but this game has my interest peaked.
I'd sure like to 'raid her'! Amiright?
Looks gritty. Good to know they're trying something original.
who cares about her face? real tomb raider fans want to know how big or small her chest will be and the jiggle physics on her butt. oh trololololol =P
@Drosa Take that back!
niiiice new face
Why? Tomb Raider was never much more than a sex sells game. Why waste time with another reboot? Take a chance and create a new character.
If it started all, it better explain a lot of things... I have expectations for this game... since Guardian of Light is a pretty good game only not a full game...
I played a pretty old version of Tomb Raider a while back... Controls were stiff, gameplay was basic, and well... I wasn't impressed. Can anyone tell me what exactly is so good about Tomb Raider? :?

@Office_Ninja: I am, but only when the game turns out disappointing or just plain awful. I'm hoping Tomb Raider here will be good.
Am I the only one getting tired of the whole "new prequel" fad that's been mulling on in the gaming scene for the last 5 or so years?
I bet this is gonna be like some Snake Eater shirt except like way more intense. Your gonna have to go out and hunt..build ur own fire, trap stuff..you know just learn how to be a harda$$ in the wild. Its gonna be so different then her other games like they said because up to this point we been used to flipin on flash lights and usin gadgets and guns and stuff...guaranteed if we want to fight..we make a weapon. If we want to eat..we use the weapon and hunt/trap. If we need light we make a fire and use a torch. Man im excited just thinkin about it...i cant wait til we have to bath...
So does this answer every fan's question on what Lara Croft did in her first adventure?
Definitely interested to see how Tomb Raider can be revitalised for a new decade.
I've enjoyed what Crystal D has done with the franchise since they first picked it up, so I'll be waiting for more info on this one.Even if the whole reboot shtick is starting to get a little old.
It should just be called 'Raider."
@robulastage This will be a reboot of the series. And as Darrell Gallagher said: "Forget everything you knew about Tomb Raider." So I guess these things doesn't matter. And by the way in Tomb Raider Chronicles you had to play as the young Lara in one mission, so this will be new in all aspects.
Hope this one will be good.. Going to be awesome...

Hope this one will be good
going to be awesome.
We just hope 4 the best
If Crystal Dynamics is going to reboot the Tomb Raiders series, then make the shooting gun play like Uncharted! As in over the shoulder!
Lara Croft tomb raider : snake eater..
They are still making Tomb Raiders? Seriously, stop making the series a forgettable milking process and let Lara die in peace. Last one I played was Tomb Raider 3, never bought another after that.
shes much hotter thsn originol lara.
i hate the new look that girl is butt ugly if laura looks like that not wastin my money!!!!!
Hi Lara, Looking forward to enjoy your another adventure. But honestly, I rather like to know and play from the very beginning of your adventures, so, these should look like a proper series of a epic adventurous tell. Thus for I request your guardians (Developers) to respect you more and should start a proper story telling adventure game series from this forthcoming game. I am really waiting for a clear picture and excellent game. Lara, we will love you more than ever if this does come true... By the way, I like your new look which is more realistic than ever... :D Bye and see you soon...
Cant say I was really into the original tomb raiders much, puzzles aren't really my thing but i enjoyed Lara Croft: Guardians Of Light because of its co-op. No doubt this will be another single player tomb raider game, so personally I wont bother.
Leave Lara Croft at her own Mansion, she got old, Bring back Kain and Raziel
Crystal Dynamics is just becoming the new Core Design, and they tried to kill off Lara in the 4th because they got sick and tired of her only to have Eidos force them to do chronicles. Just drop tomb raider and bring back Legacy of Kain instead, working on the same series repeatedly sucks the life straight out of it.
Okay, Tomb Raider, you're running out of Re-Boots/Re-Imagings/WhatHaveYous. This is now, what, the 3rd major revamping of the series in as many outings? How many different dev teams? You only get so many chances to make yourself relevant, or suddenly you're Sonic the Hedgehog and nobody cares. Its time to either matter again or not bother trying. Get it right this time! I'm rooting for you!
