"System stability" update for Nintendo's new system also makes "other minor adjustments"; Nintendo Direct presentation scheduled for 9 a.m. PDT.
Nintendo has released a new Wii U firmware update that may take as long as an hour to download. The latest update, according to Joystiq, adds "further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience."
According to Nintendo's Wii U support page for the update, the download may take "an hour or more" depending on users' Internet connection speed. Additionally, the company stressed that users should not unplug their system while the update is downloading, as doing so may "damage" the console in some way.
The update's exact purpose is unknown, though Nintendo is expected to reveal new Wii U information today during a Nintendo Direct presentation scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. PDT.
This is not the first Wii U update. It follows a hefty day-one download that Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said he is "very sorry" was necessary.
Whats with all the Updates.... How can Nintendo mess up this bad. Nintendo is so far behind the times...
Here's Mega 64 enjoying the Wii U! :
since they are making so few systems to force the people to buy now before they think about it. i hope they take the time and go ahead install the update theirselvs
I wonder whether they're going to fix the eShop at any point soon...
... the error code I'm getting (107-3003) doesn't appear to have an entry on the Nintendo.com error code lookup system, either. God knows what the problem is.
Here comes the barrage of moaning. Seriously, it is getting boring now. "oh no, now I have to wait around, blah blah blah", get over yourselves. Do something productive with you lives whilst it's being carried out, come back, then play. The overreactions to these stories are really quite pathetic.
Nintendo should release one update every 6 months minimum not every few days lol.If Nintendo releases firmware updates too early all the time people are going to think wii u is not worth buying.
I can think of a lot of other things that take an hour. Don't know why you thought it was necessary to write an article about it. I am sure those who download the update will find out when they download it.
lol Nintendo has second update for their new system already. didnt Nintendo update there wii u few days ago with another update.Nintendo released there wii u too early in rush for christmas sales.looks like l will not be getting a wii u anytime soon.
Just to make this clear, if you plan on getting a Wii U during the holidays, you will now have to wait about 3 hours before you can play it, since each update they release takes an hour to download and install. According to my internet speed tests, my internet speeds are faster than 96% of America. I pay a lot for it, and it is blazing fast. I'm talking about downloading a 4 GB movie in a few minutes fast, and it STILL took the first update over an hour to download on my Wii U.
Prepare yourselves. If you guys and gals think the PS3 download speeds are bad, you better get ready for something truly, unbearably long. Not only that, but just switching between menu's on the Wii U takes about 30 seconds to load everytime you click something. Just getting to the settings to change something, and coming back to the main menu takes over 2 minutes worth of loading.
I literally have 20 year old PC's that run faster than the Wii U.
I'm sure the problem of taking 2 minutes to do all that will speed up like your internet connection eventually-once they get the darn OS properly fixed up.
It seems that the Wii U update may have reduced the loading time of the system as the most noticeable improvement.
Nintendo seriously needs to find a way to make the updates only contain a patch to fix the areas that need to be worked on. This "download the entire OS" over and over just isn't gonna fly.
Well, I'm happy with the Wii U even with the updates. I like the "social gaming" type experiments nintendo is making with the miiverse, etc. Plus I never had a wii.
@lilrobda1 Yes they were and they are still are to this date, at least I guess they are still, wouldn't know at this point since the damn thing broke twice in less than 4yrs.
@Sepewrath Pretty sure there wasn't news of PS3 updates taking 4 hours on release, like the Wii U.
@Sepewrath @lilrobda1 Wrong! They're aren't that long anymore or do you still have dial-up where you live?
So much fanboy hate already and we only have Wii U. I can't imagine the non-sense that will happen when PS4 vs. Xbox 720 starts and then fanboy rage will go out of control. 12 more months of Nintendo hate and then 6-7 years of fanboy wars...only to see COD end up occupying top 9 out of 10 best selling games on Xbox 720. It's funny some people think the day they open PS4/Xbox 720 they'll be playing games that look like the Enix demo. Wishful thinking. It'll be Crysis 3 in real HD.
I just did the update in question took me 29 minutes...not anywhere near an hour...I suggest getting better broadband...
I jush wish Iwata would replace Reggie or at least demote him. He's a windbag and has poor promotional skills. I wanted to punch him when he zombified his face at E3.
@Celsius765 Without Reggie Nintendo would not have it's Blue Ocean philosophy where Nintendo goes after untapped markets, i.e. the casual market.
@Meta-Gnostic Bill Trinnen is better and the casuals have their smart phones, iphones, and facebook games. So theres no point in pursuing them any further. I don't appreciate how Reggie beats around the bush instead getting to the point when he speaks at E3
@Celsius765 Nintendo will not be successful enough for their shareholders without casuals. Although, due to the success of the Wii they will survive long enough before consoles no longer exist and everything is in the cloud.
OMG, I don't have an hour in my day in which I can stop playing Wii U games in order to update the system!!! What ever shall I do!?
@kuninushi Mmm, you proved my point. I mean, I think nintendo releases so many mini-games, so many casual games because their users are very busy people. They are all doctors, lawyers, engineers, big executives than don't have time to play an 10-hour campaign of a full size game. That's why you don't have an hour to spare. Right?
I don't own the system yet but if I did, I'd sure plug it to an UPS, like I do with the computer. Seems kinda risky not to do so.
No wonder Nintendo took so long to make a system up to the current console standards. Not even up to the standard in fact. They obviously have no idea what the hell they are doing.
an hour to download means nothing..give people a filesize if they are talking about downloading..I wonder how long it takes to install
I rather have a long update and have the system fixed than for it not to be fixed. There are plenty of things to do for one hour.
@Flint247 Unless said update bricks your system of course. :\
@Flint247 I would rather take the $300 I saved from not buying a Wii U and pile it up on my bed (all in one dollar bills, of course), then jump in it repeatedly.
@FAIL_TR0LL Do you know how filthy one dollar bills are? Gross, dude!
@FAIL_TR0LL She must rinse all the glitter and desperation off them before she gets home! You Mom seems pretty cool. :D
@pseudospike The ones my mom brings home from work every night seem pretty clean.
@Flint247 I'd rather it be delayed 1 week and shipped with everything already installed, running and ready to play
