New video shows Wii U loading times shortened via system update

System update shown to shave around 10 seconds off loading the Wii U system menu.

Nintendo has released a video detailing the machine's upcoming spring system update, which shows improvements to loading the Wii U's system menu when exiting software.

In the video, exiting to the Wii U's system menu from New Super Mario Bros. U takes about seven seconds with the new update. On the old version it's shown taking roughly 17 seconds.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said in January that Nintendo would improve the system's loading times by releasing two system updates for the Wii U this year, with the second due later in 2013.

Earlier this month Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot pledged to support the Wii U but said the machine needed to sell more units. "We think Wii U is a great machine. But it just has to sell more," he said at the time.

That's cool. Step in the right direction. Yet at the same time, we all know loading times wouldn't have been an issue if the WiiU had been optimized and planned further before rushing release to cover dying Wii sales.

If You play half Your life, who cares about 7 seconds more loading time? :)

Anyway, keep up the good work, with more patches, fixes. Good to hear about them.

Sorry, but that screenshot sure does look next-gen to me.

Is there a technical explanation for why the WiiU takes so long to do pretty much anything?  Switching between menus, settings, different applications, etc. is extremely slow.  Is it simply a very slow CPU, very slow storage, something else???

BTW, WiiU price drops continue to be spotted.  Right now the WiiU basic model is on sale at some Canadian Costco locations for $199.

I believe the problem may be something to do with rendering both screens at the same time.

@hystavito if they manage to improve it then its just bad programming. They rushed the system out without testing imo...there's no way that slow arse OS is considered next gen. At least they've stop referring it to it as next gen now. Nintendo should get hammered for it..cause it is slow. :p

All this hate towards to Wii U by empty_cow. I wonder why he doesn't attack the 360 as well?

This article is about Nintendo, and it has Martin Gaston's picture, so obviously it means that Nintendo is doomed.

@Bl4KD37H Do you live with queuing_for_PS4? If not you should think about it.  You two would live happily together, getting off on each other bashing Nintendo.

Getting better, Nintendo.  Now, can you shorten the wait times between great games?

dre256x
dre256x

@badwedgie00   That my friend take time, lol.. They basically had to launch the Wii U last year because they new the competition would have a bit more power behind there system..  So what you get is Ps4/next xbox will most likely get beefed up ports with a few games here and there but by then Nintendo should be releasing there heavy hitters..

Nice! Less loading time means more play time! I'm looking forward to the update!

Gee, glad it boots quicker. That'll be useful when I play... no games on it.

Fix the loading, release some interesting exclusives that don't involve Mario, and lower the price... and your console shall sell.

@istuffedsunnyHum I think 199 ? is pretty cheap considering it´s only 5 months old. Yeah that´s the basic version but as you HAVE to buy an HDD anyway I see the deluxe as kind of a ripoff  ><. I am actually considering to buy one after the PS4 release (given another 50? pricedrop and at least 2 games I´m really interested in). Oh well we´ll see

Yay, that's a lovely update, but it's the summer update I'm waiting for since it should include a few features many of us are waiting for.

@abHS4L88 I'd have wanted the gba games on 3ds but whatever way we get them so be it. I just wish this could be a chance to release unlocalized  games to us. Like say an english version of Summon Night Swordcraft Story 3

@Celsius765
Ahh, I heard of that but never really knew what it was. I only had 1 game for the GBA (Golden Sun, ooo, 3DS entry please!) but my brother had several but there were still a lot I missed out on.

@abHS4L88 @Celsius765 it was a great game one of the best rpgs on the gba in my opinion. great story weapon customization and a great cast of characters

Hopefully this patch does something about stability... I'm losing track of how many times I have to pull the power cable out of the main box because the unit is locked up.

@gregrout if the next update doesn't fix it, contact nintendo and see what they have to say.

@gregrout I been experiencing the same problem. Only when the Wii U menu loads up, It freezes up a few minutes or so when a lot of Miis are on screen.

The only work around is to turn off its internet.

@gregrout Haven't experienced that personally yet but it happens to my cousin who owns one. Strange!

Yeah it just has to load the game on the Hard drive permanently taking that Hard drive space and making the game being on a Blueray completely pointless.

altho i will say the wii u has been a disappointment up until now.  kid has 5 games for it in 5 months...not to shabby.  rayman wonderful 101 and pikmin all upcoming?  my wallet aint gonna like that.  1st year it will have probably 8 good games under his tv.  with smash bros zelda and who knows what else coming.  good luck on them flopping.  kids eat that shit up.

wow system has been out for 5 months and just bashin away...nice.  hey keep hopin those ps4 game trailers hold up.  if i remember the great ps3 was crushed for having sub par games compared to the xbox for at least a couple years.  and dont forget about the 600 lb gorilla in the room.  itll be released alongside your overpriced and runs like shit online (ps3 still doesnt get it) system.
