New Super Mario Bros Wii due this holiday

E3 2009: Nintendo uses press conference to reveal that cooperation-heavy platformer featuring popular plumber will debut later this year.

LOS ANGELES--Nintendo wasted no time trotting out Mario as part of its 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference. Leading off its show, the publisher announced New Super Mario Bros for the Wii, a game that Nintendo vice president of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway described as bringing the Mario franchise to "the fourth dimension."

As demoed during Nintendo's press conference by Treehouse head Bill Trinnen, New Super Mario Bros for the Wii features play for up to four players, with a heavy emphasis on co-op. In the demo, the four in question were Mario, Luigi, Blue Toad, and Yellow Toad. Activities demonstrated included the ability to pick up other players to solve environmental puzzles, with players also competing to secure the most number of coins.

New Super Mario Bros for the Wii is expected to arrive for Nintendo's console this holiday season. According to Trinnen, the game will be available for play at E3, so check back later for GameSpot's full impressions of the new game.

@Stonetowerghost -- Nintendo has never been out of the game when it comes to hardware. You should say that they were kind of out of it on the console front but as for the handhelds. Nintendo has always been in hardware since the NES. Besides, Nintendo is a 30 Billion company, there was no way that they were out of it. Thanks to the Wii, who knows how many BILLIONS they are now. If the GB or DS flopped as well as the Gamecube then yes I'd say that Nintendo would have a lot of problems. But thats just not the case.

Stonetowerghost 5 pts

@Benfin - Oh please. Littlebigplanet got old SO fast.

Stonetowerghost 5 pts

@HappyBB - I know what you mean seeing as the Wii is home to much shovelware, but that's something Nintendo would never do. The moment they stop making hardware, their software will die along with it. They aren't going to sell out like Sega. Besides, Wii was essential to getting Nintendo back into the playing field - they'll probably make their next console a lot more mainstream and accessible. Now that they actually have money and popularity of their own, taking a few risks won't be a problem.

Waht's the difference between Super Mario Galaxy 2 and this one?

ZippyDSMLee 13 pts

@HappyBB: Then Konami should put MGS out on all systems and PC and MS put Halo out on all system and PC, its not going to happen and even with the more sparatic steady game purchases the WII's game to console sell ratio is still higher than the PS360 and that means its the most profitable system. -------- ------- -------- -------- ---------- ------- ----------- --------- -------- ------- I'll agree it needs more real games but as a long time gamer I see the real games being raped and watered down into casual snooze fests, the industry is quick quickly becoming the new hollywood only the videos are a bit more interactive.... and its killing me they can't even put more effort into polish or bug testing or halve the price of games as a trade off to the drop in qaulity....

HappyBB 10 pts

Nintendo, let me give you an advice. Give up your console business and concentrate on developing Mario/Zelda/Metroid and your other well-known franchises to either PS3 or Xbox360 or both if all you can offer is the same stuff over and over again. Your games will then be benefited from superior visuals and processing powers, plus better controls. Waste us gamers no more money on Wii. PS3 and Xbox360 are enough in this industry.

This is a game I could buy a Wii for. Errmm... not exactly, but would buy a new controller and play at a friend's place. and I think there might be more selectable characters. Just cause they showed off 4 doesn't mean we're stuck with just these 4. Maybe more characters get unlocked later down the game.

still, this game is going to be amazing :P

Junior_AIN 10 pts

This game on the Wii seems dumb. It should be for the DS and with different mechanics.

De-Blob 5 pts

Should have used one Toad and maybe Yoshi or Wario... Wario would have owned
chefstubbies Posted Jun 2, 2009 4:52 pm ET They remade Super Mario Brothers and released it on the DS...now they're taking that already re-hashed game, adding waggle controls and porting it to the Wii? Wow...awesome E3 Nintendo...
Sadly I kinda agree....I hope its better than that....

GCwasthebestsys 5 pts

wait how do you know this will be a port of New Super Mario Bros???? we don't have any info yet. Anyway, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is all I wanted anyway. this is just icing on the cake and sounds like it will be a blast to play multiplayer

Cool. Just like zelda going to Four Swords (which was awesome by the way but boring as hell in single player). I have high hopes for this.

Ovirew 16 pts

I like that Toads are in the game, but I was kinda hoping it would be just the character 'Toad', with Peach returning just like old times, and some new playable characters thrown in to boot.

Ovirew 16 pts

I'm sorry @ Benfin I didn't realize Little Big Planet was the only sidescrolling co-op game, and the only one that could exist.

Being an old-school (read: 2-D) Mario game fan, New Super Mario Bros. Wii piqued my curiosity the most. I do hope that at least one additional character will be available from the start (which is likely as the game isn't finished yet), and additional unlockable characters can put the icing on this cake. I've enjoyed New Super Mario Bros. for the DS. If the Wii NSMB truely plays like they've shown at E3, this will be a day 1 purchase for me.

RaiKageRyu 13 pts

I expected an new Zelda but not a new Mario Galaxy. And out by the end of this year? Wow...

Benfin 5 pts

Sounds quite similar to PS3 Little Big Planet lets hope its different cause copy cats are lame

dj_b02us 5 pts

so redoing super mario bros 2 wasnt possible nintendo? you had to redo a game that youve already redone? ugh nintendos e3 showing this year is frustrating >_

Aurey 5 pts

Two toads? Where are Peach, Yoshi and Wario? Anyway, this game is attractive, I'll try to get it when it's released. But aside from this I expected more from the Nintendo press event.

TheYoshster 5 pts

If it's just gonna be Blue Toad and Yellow Toad besides Mario and Luigi i will be upset! I wanna see Yoshi and Wario! Like in SM64DS!!! But I am glad they've confirmed this Mario title.

Super-Mario-Fan 5 pts

Toads = one of the Mario franhise's underused characters. It's nice to see them actually doing more other than say that Peach is in another castle.

BlueFlameBat 8 pts

Yellow Toad and Blue Toad? That is so lame! Why not just make Peach one of the playable characters? In the bizarre alternate universe where video game fiction lives, would it really be that bad for the Princess to rescue herself?

smash_legend_DK 5 pts

...colored toads??? try WARIO WALUIGI PEACH DAISY TOAD TOADETTE but blua and yellow TOADS?!? maybe Nintendo will surprize us, maybe you can unlock more people :)

stubuz323 5 pts

blue toad and yellow toad.....that is sooo bad

RockstarDX 5 pts

I like the looks of it. Can't wait to get it.

ZippyDSMLee 13 pts

MMmmm I hope its less of a aprty game and more of a attempt to make SMB3 or SMW into a proper 3D game, Mario can be a great power up focused adventure action title Mario 64 was just the tip of the ice berg, Sunshine and Galaxy are cute but far to gimmicky to be really great Mario games... This just seems to be a simple party game with a rushed build job...I know its not done yet I know there's not much info out abotu it but my gut instinct is telling me they just can;t make a great game anymore...

thedarklinglord 5 pts

Sounds like the Nintendo's answer to LittleBigPlanet. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I really miss the side-scrolling 2-D platformer versions of Mario, especially Super Mario World for the SNES. I really wish they could recapture that magic. Minus the craptacular motion control stuff.

dr-snowman 5 pts

im hoping we can travel through time aka. the fourth dimension. but what happens after this. i mean no one knows what the fifth dimension is, right?

savagetofu 5 pts

I am not excited about this either. Where's Star Fox? Zelda goes way into the future? Excite bike 8 bit 2d wii ware game with local multiplayer? These are the questions I would like answered.

japanesegoth 7 pts

lol i like the comment "not really impressed by this game"...you know, cause we have all these videos about the gameplay and new features and what not, so it's easy to make a judgement at this point in time.

I'm w/ viewtiful_jay: more characters please.

@sonicnewgen360 "Oh man this could be the best mario game ever!" You mean... best mario game not called SMB3 ever?
